To Roland's defense, he was a "great white hunter" (yeah, outdated term), but he was not a poacher. He did it legally. Him and his friend Ajay. But he did have morals and helped out a waitress in a great deleted scene on the mainland before they hired him.
@chrisbell907511 ай бұрын
He's one of my favorites, for sure. High morals, great sayings & lines & its a travesty they cut his best scenes from the movie bc after he saves that waitress, you see him in an entirely different light than they portray him to later be. He passes up a game warden spot in San Diego bc he comes to loath Peter Ludlow & Co & sees him as the true villain he is. Losing Arjay just absolutely shatters Roland & he leaves Isla Sorna an entirely different man than the one he came as..
@Alte.Kameraden Жыл бұрын
Pete Postlethwaite's character, the "Hunter" Roland is honestly one of the best characters in the entire film. Sadly they cut this character's original introduction scene in which he had to be convinced to go on this expedition. Refusing to go originally because he grew tired of Hunting as it was a one sided game of execution. But when he realized what was on that Island, lets say, I think he thought he could use it to be his final resting place... but by 26:46 he lived... while his friend who convinced him to come didn't. The story would of come full circle from that Cut Scene.

It's always worth stating: Roland Tembo did not break the baby rex's leg. In a deleted scene, Ludlow, who is a drunk, trips and falls on the baby. Roland admonishes him. There's also a deleted scene where prior to arriving on the island, he saves a waitress from the advances of boorish tourists. Both establish that while he wants to hunt the rex, he's an honorable person.

Some people don't like the character switch with Dr Malcolm, but personally I love it and I think it makes total sense, he still has his quick wit and dry humour, but now it's coupled with PTSD and he's also now with people like his daughter and girlfriend who he's very attached to, in a place he knows from experience is extremely dangerous, it's no wonder he's switched to the more cautious responsible type after his experiences and injury from the first movie, and the treatment he got from Ingen in between the two movies.

The hunter, Roland, is actually easily the best character in the entire series. He is supremely competent and capable, being one of the few "tough guys" in the fanchise to not die (I think Owen might be the only other one). His motives are flawed at the start, but he quickly gives up his own ambitions to try to save people's lives. He looks after the main cast even after they trash his whole operation, and really only goes to shoot one of the dinosaurs when it is actively killing people. In the end, his experience on the island gives him a new respect for life.

Tembo is a great character in the JP franchise. I wish they hadn't cut so much of his backstory bc getting to see the kind of person he is from those deleted scenes & his extended dialogue & how he is a man of solid principals totally would make the audience see him in an entirely different light had they left those in there. Dispite his gruff & manly exterior, he sticks to his morals, he defends the innocent, in particular women & children (he shows this in the way he speaks to & about Sarah & Kelly in the film) & he is deeply saddened by the loss of Arjay, his dearest friend, so much so that he passes up a potential game warden spot at JP: San Diego bc he comes to hate what Peter Ludlow & his people stand for after Arjay's death at the hands of the raptors & returns to Africa a different person I feel like than he was when he originally left to join the InGen team. He didn't get his buck, he lost all the people he was put in charge of protecting & he lost his closest cofidant & hunting partner. You cannot help but feel sorry for him at the end, but knowing he was a good person the entire time at heart makes it even worse..

It doesn't reach the heights of the first movie but for many years I considered it a guilty pleasure movie and frankly these days it's one of the best movies in the Jurassic franchise. The best scenes are easily the cliff scene and the raptors in the long grass. And while I honestly don't care for the "good guys", I think Roland Tembo is a great and complex character, he has little patience for those he doesn't respect but he has a softer side as well (i.e., defending a waitress from abusive jerks in a deleted scene, making sure Sarah was okay and making sure no one told Kelly someone may have been killed).

It was late at night November 23, 1997. I had just got this movie for my 5th birthday, but I had to wait to watch it until everyone left. My mom set it up on our big-screen box TV that was hooked to my dad's surround sound (he spared no expense). I was super entranced with the movie, when the part where the T-rex pokes its head in the tent came along. The growls and snarling vibrating the floor of the house, it was intense for a 5 year old. Then Carter screams and the T-rex raises its head shakes off the tent and roars vibrating the floor. The vibrations of the surround sound throughout the movie had jarred our Chrismas tree loose and it proceeds to fall on me from behind in a pitch black room, only lit by the TV. IT SCARED THE ABSOLUTE SHIT OUT OF ME, a poor defenseless 5 year old flailing and screaming thinking he is being attacked by a T-Rex. As a tradition now to celebrate my Dino induced trauma, we turn on this movie after Thanksgiving dinner.

To answer your questions; The islands actually *are* primarily Hawaii. I believe a few sets were Universals back lot, such as the Fleetwood Mobile Lab going over the cliff. The trucks the Gatherer Team drives are Mercedes Benz ML 320s from 1997 that had their trunks cut and modified into a light-duty bed. In the books, they were modified by Thorne Mobile Systems, the field equipment company that Eddie Carr works for. The weird thing on the hood was meant to be a battery as in the books they were converted to EVs so as not to make noise and disturb the animals. (And no, they could *not* have pulled the Fleetwood Mobile Lab like that lol)
@scottb303411 ай бұрын
Actually this movie is primarily California. The Hawaiian stuff was the opening scene, a few establishing shots and half the group's trek to the Worker Village but everything else was California location (the dinosaur round up, dieter's death, San Diego/Suburban Cali, etc) or the aforementioned backlot (and Universal's parking garage). Hawaii was used much more extensively for JP and JP/// than this one. Also only one of the 320's was converted to a pick up style vehicle. The other two (one of which was left in Eddie's warehouse) were traditional SUVs with modified features meant for scientific research. I don't see anything weird on the hood on any of these vehicles to suggest they were emulating the solar powered vehicles from the book...not to mention their not being silent...the trailers are the only one with batteries/solar paneling.

It’s a pretty fun sequel. It’s so different from the book though. There’s only about 15% of the book that made it into this movie. Ian, Sarah and Eddy are the only characters from the book, and the fact that there is a site B are about the only common elements. Instead of Nick and Kelly, there were four other characters with Ian and Sarah, the antagonists were different, there was only three in the group of antagonists, totally different motivations for both Ian’s group and the antagonists for being there, Sarah arrives after Ian, no animals are removed from the island and non attack on the mainland. The original JP movie made some very good changes from the book, but LW pretty much just takes the title. It’s still a fun movie, but I’d really have liked to have seen a proper adaptation of the actual novel as it’s my personal favourite. If they remade it properly tomorrow and recasted Ian I’d still be rushing to the theatre.

Even given that Crichton wrote the original screenplay, the changes weren’t great. He toned it way down and made the characters way smarter in the movie at the same time.

Kelly is also in the book. In the movie she is a combination of herself (named Kelly Curtis) and RB Benton, another kid in the book.

Honestly the novel is pretty mediocre,a hypocritical ,boring and shallow continuation to a book that didn't need one.

So funny enough the guy who was eaten by the rex in San Diego, aka the unlucky bastard was the screenwriter for the movie

There's a huge plothole in this movie when the boat hits the harbour in San Diego. The crew was massacred but the Rex was broke free from the cargo hold after the people on shore discovered the massacre. They say that the T Rex was sedated then went into a coma so the crew gave it uppers and it broke free and went on a killing spree before one of the crew near death lured it down to the hold and locked it up before succumbing to his wounds. Well that to me seems like a whole lot of headcanoning going on considering that a man's severed had was hanging from the boats turning wheel which the T Rex somehow managed to reach without completely destroying the cabin in which the wheel was installed. It seems pretty obvious that the original script had some Raptors be on board the ship as well and the final cut just decided to cut the raptors in San Diego but left that boat scene in.

Gurl, I hope you were joking about Hawai'i.😅 Of course the first movie and parts of this one were shot in Hawai'i, but in-universe, they show you the map of the Five Deaths, "las Cinco Muertes", off the coast of Costa Rica, in the same general area as Isla Nublar, about 80miles apart. That's 6 islands, not two. This idea was taken from the original follow up novel by the original author. This is NOWHERE NEAR HAWAI'I. But you get points because it is the same ocean. 😅

I used to watch this trilogy so much as a kid on vcr that my grandparents hate them because I'd make them watch it when I spent weekends with them. It's so great seeing other people watch what I love for the first time

20:30 Well I mean the average human kills 10 times the amount of animals that a single hunter even Roland ever will. 😂 Get rid of your cell phone, AC, get rid of your bug sprays, hell get rid of your house because animals died to give you that house. Everything you owned has probably killed an animal or caused the death of an animal in one way or another. The plastics in your phone in your car and your computer end up in the water eventually and they're killing animals in there. Honestly a hunter living off the bare minimum and just hunting an animal every once in awhile is doing much less to the environment then the average human. The biggest threat are the regular consumers because they won't give up what makes their life comfortable for the protection of others. 😂🤷 Just is what it is.

He's a hunter. Actually he has my respect. He told the man to keep his fee so he could get a chance to hunt a T-Rex. He totally understood the risk and what he was doing. He had a certain level of honor about him. You will understand that in time. As for the rest of InGen's group......yeah well things have a way of balancing itself out in life. xD

"Let's beat this guy up!" Really? That's what you want you're thinking? *IT'S A MOVIE ABOUT DINOSAURS!!!!* Don't think "Let's beat him up", think "I hope your ass gets eaten!" XD And yes, he does, at the very end of the movie . . . :3 "Did work with Greenpeace." "Nice" "What drew you there?" "Women" "Not so nice." There's nothing wrong with guys being drown to women, it's called Being Straight X3 Guys will by guys :D "The only way you can live is to kill another creature so you can be the alpha." In the deleted scene, he says the hunter doesn't care if he loses (presumably as long as he's still alive), it's about the fight. It's not about being the alpha, it's about the trill of the fight (like the song, Eye of the Tiger). He doesn't care about the victory itself as much as he cares about the adventure. "He ran towards the T-Rex" Also that was a milk snake, non venomous . . . XD "I don't like they figured out how to work glass." They're not figuring out glass, they're running into it like a dumb animal, except unlike birds, they can break through it XD "Idiot, doesn't understand how roofing works, that's why you're extinct." The last person to say that "No wonder you're extinct" got blasted in the eyes and eaten in his car . . . X3

Another note the five islands aren’t in the South Pacific. The book explicitly describes them as 10 miles from the bay of Puerto Cortes which is in Honduras, in the Caribbean Sea essentially. And the description in the book seems wildly ridiculous now that we have Google Maps - 10 miles off the northern coast of Puerto Cortes puts them firmly in "Literally anyone could easily go there in a speedboat" territory. This all described in the first 3 pages of the section "The Five Deaths." It's been a minute since I read the original book, but it's possible Lost World even contradicts and retcons the entire first book too. I doubt that though, Crichton was better than that. As for real life, most of it was filmed in Hawaii for the big wide angles and stuff like the first film.
@scottb303411 ай бұрын
Actually the Islands ARE in the (south-ish) Pacific not the Caribbean. It's Puerto Cortes, Costa Rica not Honduras. And it's "10 minutes from the 'Bay of Puerto Cortes'" not 10 minutes north. Also no, most of this movie was filmed in California. The first sequence, some establishing shots and some of the trek to the worker village were in Hawaii but the vast majority of principal photography was done in Cali...like 90% of it. Not nearly as much as done for JP.

that little girl just saw their connection and at that time science was only finding out more prove that dinosaurs are birds ancestors and to be fair if you imagine some feathers onto that compy (which it likely had) it looks very much like a bird.

I'm so happy you got to watch this movie! I like all the Jurassic movies it's hard to pick a favorite. I remember loving this movie just as much as the first Jurassic Park! I know not many people enjoy this one and I do see it critiques on this movie, but overall it's one heck of a thrilling adventure! Once again, I'm happy you like this movie and looking forward to the next ones! Here's a fun fact for ya: The female Tyrannosaurus Rex, aka Doe, and the first Tyrannosaurus Rex, Rexy, are sisters in this franchise! :D
