BTS absolutely had to do as much as the Beatles to get those #1s. They sell physical albums like no one else today. They also get no playlisting on streaming services and do not get radio spins for non-English songs. Unlike most other artists today, BTS do not engage in payola so they get no industry support. They managed to top Billboard charts with Korean songs. The Beatles sang in English and are white. BTS got those number 1s DESPITE how the industry is today, not because of it. And ARMYs absolutely know how Billboard works. We are experts in the shady practices of the industry and how BTS are organic and have integrity (as do we). Those stats are not meaninglessly quoted. Those stats are quoted because we know exactly how groundbreaking it is that BTS has achieved what they have when the entire industry is working against them. They are afraid of what BTS can do without selling out. They are afraid of how successful their label became by allowing the artists to have autonomy.

I know people already talked a lot on the bts vs billboard or radio thing, but once you get into it, its interesting to see that it isn't bts that strategizes against bb, its the fans. BTS does big physical sales, but for a while, it was hard to get to albums since they were shipped from Korea. The way it started was that fans went to music stores so much asking about bts that distributors reached out to Big Hit, not the other way around, to distribute their albums. After that, we had physical albums. When it came to the radio or fair media coverage, fans would reach out to radio stations asking for songs, send flowers, thank you notes. I think npr or some crowd-funded radio mentioned they received fan donations after doing a cover story with music explanations. The radio host that mentioned this said something that I agree with - its like the fans still treat bts as this indie group that is worth listening to, but just needs a push, despite them already being incredibly successful. This is why BTS gives so much credit to ARMY. It is like this weird entity that moves on its own, and somehow makes things happen. A super interesting case study. (My gosh, once you get to the White paper - a full on position paper by a bunch of army connected to a WW2 controversy that bts got pulled into unintentionally.)

ARMY has studied and mastered the Billboard charts. We've been able to bypass a system set up to be racist, xenophobic and discriminatory against POC who sing in a different language. BTS had to work 100% harder than the beatles, a predominately white band to get those 6 #1's. The fight we went through just to get one song playing on the radio was hell and still is today. No radio station will willingly play a Korean song unless we push it. They will play BTS' English songs like dynamite and butter no problem. They are so two-faced but we found a way around American radio. We have the highest streaming and physical copies to prove it. Like RM said, if there's no way, let's draw the whole map again.

I absolutely and whole heartedly respect RM and Suga for not responding to the aggression with aggression, the clip does not show their response but RM said "well if you want to feel that way, then feel that way". Suga spoke from the heart and said he just wanted people to hear his music and I'm sure they left there with more fans than to begin with. Instead they used their talent to respond with their bars and that is a huge part of why their fanbase is so big and they have die hard fans because they don't stoop to the level of the people that talk shit about them. They are artists that live by their message, they don't sing about drugs and violence, they work hard, stay humble and mind their business.

One thing I will say about Army in regard to your comment around 3:28 and the Billboard #1's/charts. They have studied and mastered the chart and criteria (for years) so much that when they were criticized about it (getting Bangtan to #1) a reporter questioned RM about it in an interview and RM basically said they and the fandom were playing by the charts rules and said it is up to BB to change it if they don't like how their achievements are made on the charts. And guess what? BB did just that - changed the rules to make it harder for Bangtan. FYI Bangtan also has one of the highest filtering rates on Spotify but yet the fandom still maintains keeping them in the top 10 for Global artists streaming on a daily basis. (Someone please correct me if I misspoke on any of this info but this is well known within fandom). Oh and I will leave the whole "bundle" issue/tricks out, LOL! Keep up the great reactions and commentary.

03:28 BTS has never done bundles. They have highest filtering rate on Spotify (cause they don't do payola) and they don't have any radio rotation apart from Dynamite and Butter. Also i saw video where people told how charts were manipulated back in 60s)) so methods changed only, now it is payola: labels pay radio for spins, to Spotify for playlists and bot-farms for streams🤷 Army streams and buys themsleves which is our way to really support BTS and translated into actual revenue for the artist. If you check all the media: yt, spoti and sales, their numbers correlate with eachother and none looks like artificially inflated. What now a lot of kpop groups start to do they make 15 version of album to inflate physical sales, cause they want that #1 on BB 200 chart, they get their double million seller album but if you check their streams it's a fraction, they don't even get close to BB100 And after recent reform of BB100 to focus on radio (BB actually changed rules twice because of BTS ) they try to block BTS from the chart as hard as possible cause they are jot signed to US label, don't do payola, thus US industry doesn't benefit from them, they get condescending and xenophobic/racist article from BB and other media as well

The difference between BTS and others as far as Billboard is the fact that they reached their numbers WITHOUT adding in bundles sales like American artist. They achieved those accolades strictly by the power of Army supporting every single thing they do.
@Baddiesc7gn
@Baddiesc7gn Жыл бұрын
YES, Taylor Swift was queen of the bundles, but no one said a thing about chart manipulation. However, when BB made its changes they eliminated bundles first then changed the rules. It absolutely was extremely difficult for BTS to get those #1s==moreso than the Beatles because BTS had very little US radio airplay. Billboard VP hates BTS. He would insult them by accusing them of chart manipulation, but not hesitate to try to use them for record breaking magazine sales. When a BB writer had the audacity to insult the guys and Army, RM checked them then Army canceled our preorders for the magazine. We are not fools. ARMY finds a way. So, the history of BTS hardships involves restricting access to tv time because they were not part of one of the BIG THREE resulted in ARMY coming up with away around the mountain and that was social media. They started receiving significant radio time in more markets with Dynamite. ARMY worked diligently to get some US stations to play their songs. They also asked target to start carrying their physical albums. DNA in 2017 was the turning point for them in the US. They were invited to the BBMAS. Be Free, those are the arses who insulted them during the radio show. The radio station ambushed RM, SUGA. They invited them under the guise of talking to them about one of their achievements. K-pop idols wear makeup. SK makes makeup specifically for men. CYPHER 2 is the rap lines response to Be Free. BF made it his mission to disrespect them on social media. ARMY went in, finally he gave up and apologized. BTS stopped doing variety shows, and started creating their own content. Don’t know what BeFree and dem doing now. Lol.

@@Jurnalist_ She just presents facts after facts. Allegedly xD It is so funny, when you are outside the fandom or touching it tangentially you might think "these army are weird or paranoid". I promise you we see all happen in real time and it's between funny and outrageous. In an interview some... months ago? (2 years?) with WilliamBored the "reporter" had the audacity to be VERY disrespectful and among some stupid question he said "what do you think about your fans buying your music and tricking the system?" and Namjoon (president of Namkanda) replied "if that is so, it is not for me to chip in, but for Billboard to change the rules" as we play ALWAYS by the rules. And not anyone or everyone can say so. I promise you, once you get into the interviews stuff (not the cringy af ones "who's your dream collab?" "what's your favorite food in America?"... triple slap to them), you see how they all reply so maturely, even JK. There are vlogs too, I love Namjoon ones because he is so raw. He ponders why people hate on him because of a silly name (rap monster), or his glasses, or the hairstyle... Why they question the type of music he makes, why they criticize him left and right. He reaches the conclusion of "I'm gonna be me". Even if difficult that's been his goal since day 1 (at 19yo). He's protected the guys in all ways he could and he can, and in return he's the other 6 baby in a way. The synergy they all have is a once in a while thing. That's what brings fans together to form an army ;)

Oh boy wait you have no idea how much army have had to study and master the systems of Billboard, KZbin, and Spotify specifically to get the numbers we have. We have had people go out and test how many views get deleted off of BTS's videos cus the algorithm doesnt want to count them. How many songs and videos you have to stream between plays so your view/stream counts. How many playlists people make to rack up streams. This fandom is incredibly organized and dedicated. It will go into it in The Rise of Bangtan, but the reason you can buy physical copies of BTS and kpop artists' albums at Target or in other stores now is because of Army's persistence in calling and asking them to sell BTS' albums. The reason you even hear any of their songs on the radio is because of armys plying the DJ's with requests and gifts and stuff. Both BTS and army gotta work like 3x as hard as artists doing half the work BTS do to get the same accolades and accreditations they deserve. And BTS never asked us to do this. They want us to listen to their music. And all this work is part of how we pay them back for the positive impact they have had on our lives.

@@Jurnalist_ yeah, I watched your reaction on Patreon and the minute I heard that, I knew the comments were gonna fly😂😅. But it’s because many people have the misconception that BTS is an industry plant or darling and that they had their success handed to them by the industry. Another group of good looking guys handed songs and a spot on the chart. Nope! Every bit of success was step by step and took a lot of work from them and the fans. I originally didn’t know how things worked and wasn’t very involved when it came to the music I liked, I though radio did take requests or needed some level artist success (viral song or BB top 10) to get on the radio so everything on the radio/tv must be really popular with somebody. But after I’ve seen how they act whenever BTS is requested (even if it’s in English ) and the arbitrary roadblocks the industry creates, I saw how important it is to financially support artists by buying their albums, streaming their music, being active with social media to spread presence etc. it’s funny how they made it so you need radio to get BB top 10 but have to have BB top 10 get on the radio (and even then, it can be very little) 🙄 it’s shenanigans.

A Google search will reward you with numerous articles on BTS' STRONG physical sales numbers.

BTS' BB achievements are also notable for the fact that they didn't do things in the industry approved way. In fact, it was ARMY who organized themselves to request BTS on radio across the country and introduce them to DJs, programmers & station managers, it was ARMY who contacted purchasers for Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Amazon, etc., which resulted in US distribution contracts, it was ARMY who organized listening and streaming parties. It was BTS & Big Hit that refused to cut corners and do deals that compromised themselves. One of the most exciting things about BTS is that their global success has come even though most of their songs are in Korean. Their talent and charisma are definitely a part of it, but when you get around to reading their lyrics, you will see that their songs have a rare potency that transcends language. Maybe the interpretations are not exact, but their songwriting is so strong, and the force of their delivery so authentic, that you can't help but feel it. I am 63, have been in music all of my adult life, and I contend that BTS has written some of the best songs I have ever heard...both traditional and rap songs.

Ohh you definitely should react to "BTS vs radio", "BTS vs Spotify", "BTS vs attendance award shows" and basically all the videos of boracity magazine channel to get a glimpse of how BTS are treated by the western music industry. And how hard for them it actually is to stay on the top. If the industry could profit out of their success they would be on top of the charts and promoted non stop. But they are not signed to American labels and don't do payola so the industry hates them cause they are on top despite going against their payola artists.

Here’s the thing. Other acts were able to accumulate a bunch of number ones BECAUSE of Payola. Radioplay was majority of the reason why they’d beat BTS. Physical sales and streams do not weigh as much as radioplay which has always been our #1 enemy because BTS always wins by a landslide which is why we always call bs on BB bc radioplay does not mean there is more demand to the music. We legit have the stats to prove it. To this day, we still have to beg to get BTS on the radio. If you look at the list of BTS’ accumulated #1s, the song “Life Goes On” had (and i am not kidding you) ONLY 4 SPINS ON THE RADIO. But we still made it to #1 because of streams

Hi there, I've just turned 60 y/o and I'm an Army mom from the Philippines. I share the sentiments of the other Army comments here about BB ratings of BTS and I'd like to add my personal opinion that one of the underlying reasons why we would go to great lengths to move BTS up the charts is to pay it forward for BTS bec of the great help they have done in saving many lives from depression, anxiety and loneliness just by their songs and their lyrics. Personally BTS has given me a renewed hope in life so I'm thankful to them. Thank you for checking out Taylor's video.

People forget they were discovered as kid. Their debut was in 2013, so were mainly high schoolers. Together longer than their group anniversary year(debut date). Suga, Jhope were discovered in 2010, so about 14-15 years old. Jin(about 18 years old), Jungkook(about 13) and V(15) were discovered in 2011. Last Jimin(15-16) was discovered in late 2012. So when they say their Korean age, take 2 years off to get American/universal age. For me, haters making disparaging remarks, insults, harassment to death threats-they did that to vulnerable, humble, kind kids…that’s what makes me support them the most.
@Ana-id6uk
@Ana-id6uk Жыл бұрын
With all due respect, while your sentiment is true, it's a little overexaggerated since it is rare to take 2 years off. Im going off their birth years, Suga was 17 when he joined, RM and JHope were 16 when they signed, Jin 19. I think the maknae line is accurate, with Jimin def being 16 since he joined super duper late. Also, they joined as trainees, which is more like music and dance school alongside their regular school, and they didn't know if the company will be able to debut them, there were other trainees too, etc. Once they debuted is when the hate started and most of them were out of high school by then (which ofc, still messes with you, they were very young)

@Jurnalist, being a dedicated fan to BTS from their very humble beginnings in 2013! I have a lot to say about the billboards now, the Gaon Chart is strictly Asian artist only and international level when you go to the western billboard charts things have been said that BTS was winning on the Billboard charts top 10 consecutively and the reason why RM said that was because the billboards did make the rules so it was up to them to change the rules and they did because they were not happy that an international South Korean “boy band“ was taking the top 10 and the western artist were not! United States is the biggest music industry and then Japan is a very close second! When it comes to identifying with the physical albums and radio play combined BTS got hardly any radio play they had many physical albums they were pushing them out from day one because I own every single album Korean and Japanese that they have made. No please hear me out, I was one of the ARMYs that were calling Radio stations in my state to get BTS songs played. I myself and many other fans of BTS were buying flowers sending cupcakes writing wonderful letters to get them to play on the radio, one thing BTS never did was have their company HYBE labels pay to play “payola “ they didn’t stoop to that level and you know what payola is because you are in the music business yourself, you heard it’s unfair an illegal tactics to get your artist played every hour on the hour! Payola is what is used to get their artists recognized and put on the Billboard charts! BTS ‘s company didn’t do that and they’re not gonna stoop to that level and the only reason why BTS has not played regularly on the radio is because they are from South Korea! unlike Despacito which it was 90% Spanish song was played and made number one on the Billboard! True I would say the majority of the people in the United States do not speak Korean like they do Spanish/English here! But those boys deserved their flowers and they should have been recognized for more than what they have accomplished because they did hit the billboard 200 album charts many times and their albums were not all in English only three of their songs were in English from different albums,”Dynamite “, “Butter”, “ Permission To Dance”! BTS had Many interviews here in the United States on many radio stations they actually went to the radio stations promoting their albums gave free copies to the DJ’s and never were played there were actual proof that the albums were thrown away or put in yard sales! Because HYBE labels BTS‘s company refused to do payola and they had the money to do it in the past 3or4 years that they have now been recognized more popular in the US! People want to compare BTS to American boy bands such as *NSYNC Backstreet Boys New Kids on the Block, one direction. BTS out sold all those boy bands they’ve been around longer ! BTS have consecutively prove themselves it’s just the xenophobia and racism even to this day still plays a part when it comes to BTS, for example a German radio station person , and I’m paraphrasing because I’m not going to “Word for Word here, “BTS is like equivalent to COVID-19 hopefully they will find a cure!“ “BTS need to take a 20 year vacation to North Korea! “ Even a famous rapper here in the United States who has his own podcast now, Joe Budden, “ I don’t care about BTS I don’t like them I hate them I don’t wanna see them coming down from the sky in the 64 Grammys (which was one of their performances)” I know they come from China” you can look this up if you don’t believe me but he definitely said he hated BTS for no reason at all ! now if you hate the music fine but BTS never did anything to you they just try to put their music out there they’re positive message they try to get recognized in the international stream of music especially in the United States but still it’s countless hatred ignorance and xenophobia that has BTS not getting the recognition that they deserve! 💜

Actually. Despacito didn't get momentum until Justin Bieber featured in it. The version with him in it was the one that the radio played plus they didnt even give Luis Fonsi one single Grammy even though it got nominated for a few and was the biggest song that year.
@laurahilliker5336
@laurahilliker5336 Жыл бұрын
@Meraly21, Thanks for the added info on my comment! The point is that they will play Latin American artist songs on American US radio! I know that it was very disrespectful for the Grammys to ignore Luis Fonsi! The point here is anyone who doesn’t have an English background for instance like Justin Bieber and he is a feature on Mr. Luis Fonsi ‘s. Song! BTS didn’t get full spins on the US radio until they made an all English song, that’s why the Grammys has several different categories the Latin American category as well as K-pop category many of the American music awards have now done that since K-pop and BTS are dominating the charts. Luis Fonsi did not get his justified recognition until an English speaking artist like Justin Bieber featured on it that is unfair and very racist of the radio stations and what the American music awards system and Grammys do! Even when BTS did a remix with Jason Derulo Savage love it didn’t go number one untill BTS was a feature and did the remix that’s when Jason Derulo took full credit and did not give BTS the respect and acknowledgment that they helped him to get to the number one spot on the billboard music chart. Jason Derulo song wasn’t going anywhere until BTS got on it. Non-English speaking artist are not getting the respect on US radio play without a record company that will use payola to help them get their artist played consecutively every hour on the hour!

What you said about respecting contemporary dance but it not hitting you so hard, that was interesting. I have been thinking about Jimin and how he melds street dance with contemporary with martial arts. Since I saw him about 3 1/2 years ago, I have been comparing him in my mind to the great male ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev. The thing about that guy is he was very emotionally expressive, and yet totally within his classical trained lane. The thing about Jimin is he is very emotionally expensive, yet he breaks out of his lanes and mashed them up. Like he is developing little by little a new vocabulary of dance. He’ll take a move from here and mash it was a move from there and slide in a move from somewhere over there and it’ll sometimes turn into a move that behaves like a new movement word in his personal language that he uses to talk to us, to tell us stories with his body and energy. So I have recently begun to believe that he is one of the greatest dancers who has ever lived. That may seem like a huge claim to make. I’m just gonna keep watching him to see if I’m right.
@Jurnalist_
@Jurnalist_ Жыл бұрын
That’s a good analysis and you seem to have a understanding of contemporary dance do you can see parallels I would never even fathom. But traditional contemporary dance never made sense to my brain just a bunch of rolling on the floor and reaching for the sky in really tight clothes. 😂😂

@@Jurnalist_ Honestly I pretty much agree. There has always seemeed to be too much ego coming into the movement for it to be vibrantly genuine. With Jimin, recently it jumped out at me how his torso can be still. while all the rest of him is making very precise, forceful moves. To me it seemed like something he pulls out from his martial arts work. He knows how to direct his force. It's more than isolations, it's about I don't know... it seems like some parts of his body are made moving steel. He can look so soft, but His body can be rock-hard and in total control. He has the face of a baby at times, there are some famous shots around especially on Instagram and Twitter, where he's asleep, and you would swear he's six months old. I think he uses that muscular skill when singing. He does head voice, chest voice, mixed, but never a falsetto despite that his voice doesn't belkng in the high register naturally, he's been singing high because he was asked to when he joined BTS. It took me some time to get used to the sharp edges in his sound. Now he sounds unmistakable, and soothing. Thanks for taking time to talk about this. When I was listening to you earlier, I realized I am responding to a sense of your authority as a human, and in the industry. So I really appreciate your words and thoughts.

I see that you're drawn to RM and Suga. I love seeing these two together, especially when they talk about music. They're the most experienced out of the group since they both started young. There are videos of just the two of them talking. The ones that come to mind are: * Suchwita ep. 1. This is Suga's talk show and RM was his first guest, who came on to talk about "Indigo", among other things. * BE-hind story - Suga's story - In this one RM interviews Suga about his role in their "BE" album and about his future career goals. * BTS answer unit songs - They talk about "Respect", a song they wrote together as a unit song in "Map of the Soul: 7". Fascinating conversations, if you want to watch them, either on your own time or as a reaction.

@@cathelijnevangent4143 Great suggestion! And this would be a great intro into their journey as it features snippets of a song from each year since BTS's debut. I believe they're all B-sides, which are just as note-worthy as their title tracks. @Jurnalist would be cool to see your reaction to it.

A month and a half huh? Another one bites the dust!!! I subscribed! Why, I love watching folks fall down the rabbit hole! Especially since it seems you have a musical background! And your comments were well taken by the respect you've shown. Sometimes reactors think they know it all, but like BTS, you were humble and it sounds like you are giving them a chance! Like Jimin says, "You nice, keep going."

THE WAIT WAS WORTH IT. Knowing more about you n your bkgrd makes me e en more appericative as to your insights. There is still a lot to learn about the industry and glad to know that you can share n perhaps help us understand the industry more. I too used to work for a music college (mainly overall entertainment) so getting to know more of the bts (pun intended) of music intruiges me. THANK YOU for your time that you took to watch Taylor's vid, and looking fwd to the contuined journey you'll be taking us along with. BORAHAE 🖤🥀

50:30 - LMAO, true! But Jimin is an ultimate trap. He can be very nice and cute to you one moment so you lower your guard, the next he's taking your head off with bare hands 😅 Wanted to add some extra info, but other ARMYs covered it plenty in the comments :D

@@Jurnalist_ they actually had to change lyrics of Fake Love (please react to it) when they performed it at Billboard awards, because this word was really prominent in some parts of songs and they didn't want to be misinterpreted and cause misunderstanding. The thing with billboard and radio is that the Beatles have always been played on the radio, but the radio refuses to play any BTS music bc it’s not in English. Even songs like butter, dynamite and ptd got filtered a LOT by radio play. And when looking at Spotify stream filters as well BTS’s filtering is upwards of 50%

Sleep Deez, the grammy nominated procuder of My Time, who has worked with stars like Rihanna, Usher, Black Eyed Peas etc. stated in a Q&A session on social media and on Twitter that Beyoncé loves the song. Beyoncé even posted a photo of Jungkook on her website for her Virgo season yearbook in 2021. My Time is a jam. Love the 2000er R‘n‘B-ish vibes and JK‘s hilarious runs in the song.
