I am a Republican, and normally do not like Trevor Noah, but this is the most sensible thing I have heard anyone on the right or left say! If this is how he truly feels all the time, and the "jokes" are simply jokes the other times, then I would LOVE to see someone like this run for president one day because we need someone sensible to unite both the left, right, black, white, everyone in this country so this place can move forward in a positive direction without all the drama. My cousin was falsely accused of sexual assault and in college I knew a girl who told everyone that this guy raped her but it really seemed to be more of a case that she slept with him and regretted it. There is a website called falsehatecrimes.org that has started documenting this. I totally believe in supporting the VICTIM but it must first be determine that they are truly a victim. Otherwise you yourself may become the victimizer of an innocent person who is being dragged through the mud. We become like the people if Salem who said you are a witch until you prove that you are not (guilty until proven innocent). And you create more incentive for people to lie because they know everyone will automatically be on their side without question. There are many vindictive, spiteful people in the world and they will and do use false accusations against people they don't like or for attention or to get money from a go fund me account. Simply making an accusation makes you an accuser not a victim. Evidence determines if the accuser a victim OR if the accused is actually the victim.

I get that we as a public need to start vetting the news we get, but I don’t think the responsibility should be only on us. When the story first came out, I didn’t see any legitimate reason to question it. We shouldn’t be blamed for every time something didn’t turn out to be what we originally thought. It’s a bias, but one that’s often proven correct before in similar cases in the past. I don’t have the time to verify every scrap of news that comes my way as meticulously as I may have done for a research paper. I rely on news sources to present the information in the best way possible and to fact check themselves consistently. The real test is if we the public can be willing to admit when we were wrong. We’re going to make mistakes, so it more important that we make amends for when we get it wrong.

My point is there is too much information for us to spend an equal amount of time methodically evaluating. It is also the responsibility of those who act as news sources to do their own fact checking and earn being reliable sources. And even if everyone does their homework everytime, we'll still get it wrong because we're not perfect. It's easy to just blame people for being to willing to just believe anything when even the best researchers can be duped to. This is inductive reasoning, which, while it can be flawed, is a valuable tool we can't just throw away. It's more important that we practice admitting that we're wrong and making amends than blaming everyone for falling for fake news. Yes, people need to check themselves before they wreck themselves, but we should criticize them too much for an easy mistake.
