Hope you come out unscathed with Isaias this week. We were blessed to have Hanna pass 40 miles to the south of us. Keep doing what you’re doing. A lot of us who can’t retire yet live vicariously through you. Tight lines and God bless.

Not only are we unscathed Eric, it was pretty much a non-event here in New Smyrna Beach. Apparently there was so much dry air over Florida that it nullified the downpours we were supposed to get plus the eye of the storm was 'supposed' to be right over us.. but early last night, it jogged East so we even missed any big winds. But, it will be several days for the energy in the ocean to dissipate so we can get back out and share the Lords blessing...

I have caught a spade once, and they put up a heck of a fight. I'm in NW FL and anglers on the forums say a peeled green grape will catch spades. Great video Salty.

Before I go out on my next trip... after this storm passes, I will get several packs of clams and take along a baggie of 1/0 hooks. I'll hold off on the grapes but may try later...

I have never caught a spade fish bur would like to. Great day fishing Lane. I know that feeling you felt when your motor stopped. Been there. But all the work you put into it paid off. Did you make a video of replacing the impeller in to lower unit? Great video! What do you use to edit your videos?
@SaltyKayak4 жыл бұрын
Hi Danny, I started making a video for changing this Yamaha water pump but one little collar around the shaft took 2 hours to finally get off and I ruined it so had to go and buy another one. After all the drama and pounding and prying, I was in no mood to continue making the video.. I was just ready to get it back together. But now that I know the difficulty involved, I will next time, simply go and buy a new collar and use a dremel to gently cut off the old one.. I use PowerDirector to edit my videos. The one I have is several years old..

@@SaltyKayak Ha! I know the frustrations of engine work, but you got it done! I have wondered about disconnecting the shifter in newer motors. What I understand is there is nothing you have to disconnect-- it just uncouples. Sounds too easy. You do a great job on your videos. I'm flying a drone and am looking to edit some great crashes, Ha! Thank you for the info!

I am in need of a new fishfinder/GPS too.. if you noticed in the last couple videos.. my Humminbird s reading the water temps in the 175 degree range.. not a problem as it is not a critical need but this last trip, it began reading my water depth as 2.3 foot and that is a problem as it is critical to always know the water depth... Always something..!

@@SaltyKayak yes sir on that note we did ok fishing we caught 10 mangroves the first time I ever caught 25 miles off the Ga. Coast and they where nice size they were all over 18" a couple of 22" I guess they spawn or migrate this time of year but all I know they were hungry.

Question for you. Where is the best place to find a good deal on fishing reels? I am looking for the Diawa BG 4000. No one in San Antonio stocks it
@SaltyKayak4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kurtis, I have so many reels attached to fishing poles that i won't need to buy any for years to come. But, when I was rod or reel shopping, I would decide which one I wanted.. like the BG4000 and open up my web browser and open up Walmart and plug that model in and write down that price. Then open Amazon and plug that model in and write that price down.. etc, etc. In other words, I would search for the cheapest price for the same item BUT shop for the TOTAL price which includes taxes and shipping. There are some vendors that have a "sale" on a reel and it looks like you are going to save.. $15 over other retail outlets but they bump up the shipping and handling to be equal or even over other vendors. Also, I have scoured Craigslist in my area for 'fishing' and have found really good deals there too but of course, you have to go there to test the reel or poles out to make sure they are functional. And one more place I have found good deals is yard sales.. especially where there are sales in communities close to the river, lake or inlet... plus at yard sales, you can barter down the price. Hope this helps...

Try Kels rod service in Casselberry, Fl. They service Your trolling motor, may be cheaper than replacing.

Hey salty were do you buy your clams and will clams at grocery store work thank you
@SaltyKayak4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeff, GOOD question.. and if the clams at the grocery store are raw and not cooked, they should be fine. I buy my clams at Captains Cove.. basically across the street from the police station. Let me know if the clams work from the grocery store.. I may have to try some.

Did you find out what was causing your motor to shut off? I have the same motor and I like to be prepared.
@SaltyKayak4 жыл бұрын
Well samantha.. I have learned over the years not to rush and begin taking things apart that I 'think' might be the problem.. like the VST tank. Which I think might have something to do with the stalling issue. But since it is a brand new problem but not a serious one, I am going to continue doing research because it might not.. be the VST tank. I have yet to change the small fuel filter inside back of the motor and will do that PLUS I have bought some in-line fuel filters and will add one of them between the fuel pump and the VST tank. Today, my 'oil change kit' came in and I will change the oil and put on a new filter. However, it also may be an intermittent electrical problem which happens just as I shift from 'in gear' to neutral. A couple of times, instead of slowly.. shifting from forward to neutral (and stalling) I quickly shifted from forward to neutral.. and the motor didn't stall. So samantha, I am in a 'continue to ponder and test mode'.

I hear you say Colvert a lot, is that man made also how much man made structures are out there that deep and why?
@SaltyKayak4 жыл бұрын
hi rickm2.. I sat 'culverts' because 90% of our artificial reefs are made up of old busted concrete culverts that are kept for making artificial reefs rather than putting them in land fills. I think I have a great underwater video that clearly shows how these culverts look... check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKPLapScft2GjKc

Interesting thanks, I’m down here on vacation this week gonna go try for some fish on the jetty
@SaltyKayak4 жыл бұрын
@@rickRN77 My advice is to use live shrimp with a 4 or 5' 40lb leader and a 4/0 hook. But, fishing from the walkway, you will lose a lot of gear in the rocks. If you can fish from a boat and KNOW how the currents are, you will get your 5 Mangroves in about 30 minutes from the end of the jetty. But, it is dangerous if you don't know the currents and tides. I have seen lots of boats up in the rocks there.

Thanks much for your insight. Going to retire down here in 9 years lord willing and the creek don’t rise
@SaltyKayak4 жыл бұрын
@@rickRN77 Hi rick.. it was 10 years BEFORE I retired that I began doing my research into where I wanted to retire to. We went to several spots along the NC and SC coast and spent long weekends looking the place over. Then we decided that neither one of us (wife and I) liked the cold so for the last 8 years before retirement, we bought a camper and put it in storage where we now live.. New Smyrna Beach and would pull it out and pick a campground to set it up and used it as 'base camp' to travel up and down the East coast of Florida looking at places we might want to retire to. My criteria was simple.., 1.) Low crime statistics, 2.) small population, 3.) close to an inlet and close to shopping. Our top 3 choices were St. Augustine, Melbourne (anything further South was way too crowded and too much cement and buildings and here in New Smyrna Beach. An opportunity.. completely a 'God blessing' came our way and we purchased a home 1 year before I retired here in New Smyrna Beach and the rest is 'fishing' history. One IMPORTANT discovery we made is that in the heat of Summer, if you are within 10 to 20 miles of either coast, the temperature is 4 to 7 degrees cooler in the Summer and 4 to 7 degrees warmer in the Winter thanks to the sea breezes that start about noon. If you move anywhere20 or more miles away from the coast, in the Summer, it can be like living on the surface of the sun.. it is brutally hot...!
