It has been nearly 6 months since my last 'fishing' video and many of my long time subscribers have been wondering "what has happened to Saltykayak... did he die?" Well no, I am still healthy (and so is Big John) but not doing much fishing. The Lord has given me in a completely new passion and I have turned from the getting the smell of fish on my hands to getting dirt under my finger nails. I am beginning to learn about plant cuttings and seeds to air propagation. Also, casting leaves in cement and painting them to casting cement flower pots. Projects, projects, projects.
This video will touch on just a few projects I am being blessed with. The lesson here is.. you are NEVER too old to begin a new hobby.

Then, do what the Lord tells you. I do. And almost always, He tells me through His word which I read daily but on rare occasions He whispers in my ear. George, liars do NOT go to heaven. Those who do not believe.. don't go to heaven..but they do live forever in 'darkness'. I decided not to be a fool a long time ago once I realized that evolution is impossible.. the laws of entropy, DNA, information, life ONLY creates life, etc., etc.

Lane, I’m not sure where to begin or really what to say. To say that I won’t miss watching you and John fishing would be a lie. To say I’m happy that you will be posting more planting videos then fishing would also be untrue. However, I’m mature and wise enough to know that you have to enjoy what you do in life. That these choices are yours and yours only to make, for we have only one life to live on this earth. I will say thanks for giving me comfort and solace during some stressful times with your videos. Make the most of it always. God Bless

Hi GR, I am having a big tree removed this coming 31st and I will be planting a row of bamboo all along that fence area, along the back and sides of my property lines, down my walkway and any pots I have left over, I will probably sell...

I was just talking to my dad about you and how I was missing you and big John’s fishing trips my dad is getting up there in age and I can no longer get him in and out of the boat and after fishing together for the last fifty plus years I haven’t been in the mood to go out and wet a line. Glad to see your healthy happy and doing things that keep you young and going.

Well glad to see you back on. That's a great hobby you picked up. We do miss seeing you on the water but looks like we will have some different videos now to watch. A word of caution on those bamboo trees and bushes. Make darn sure you want them where your going to plant them. Cause once established you can't get rid of the root system my ex father in law was a horticulturist and thought me many things and that was one of the lessons. Also which I get a big kick out of is grafting. He showed me how to graft several different types of citrus off of one root stock plant. Pretty cool to see that work. We had navels tangerine and grapefruit and a few more varieties on one tree. Well good luck with everything. Say hello to big John next time you see him. Glad to see you again. Happy growing....

Nice video. Is there a way to identify creeping bamboo? Thanks.
@SaltyKayak
@SaltyKayak 3 жыл бұрын
From all my readings and research, there is no visual way to tell from the leaf structure but it is pretty easy to tell from the root structure and whether or not new shoots are popping up 5' or 10' away from the parent plant. Clumping bamboo stays in a 'clump' and over the years, expands in a basic expanding circle.. easy to control. But creeping bamboo sends out roots in all directions UNDERGROUND and a shoot or several might pop up in the middle of your neighbors yard. Studies have been done on how to control creeping bamboo and they sell thick plastic barriers that are 22" deep that you can bury AROUND your creeping bamboo and it will be contained. Apparently the roots will never go deeper than 20" while they are 'creeping' and will follow the barrier and can be controlled that way. WAY too much work. Just buy or plant 10 or 15 clumping bamboo so that the circles will eventually grow to touch each other and you will basically have an impenetrable barrier in a couple years.

Hi Drako, I have been interested in trying cement casting for quite awhile. When I was pouring some walkways several years ago, a leaf fell in the wet cement and left a perfect cast when it decomposed. I also checked out a few videos on KZbin and once I stopped fishing, in that vacuum, and since my neighbor has a bunch of elephant ear bushes, I decided to give it a try. And yes, I plan on making a "how too" video soon.

So your saying no more fishing? I don't think i could ever give it up it's so relaxing, excitement of what your going to catch or get hooked, having fresh fish to eat or give to friends, just the memories when my dad took me fishing for the first time and the last when he passed away and now making memories with my brother in law as we are both retired. Thank you for all the enjoyment you gave me. Larry

Hey salty, good to see you again. Is there a particular reason why you quit fishing? And did you sell your boat?
@SaltyKayak
@SaltyKayak 3 жыл бұрын
Hi MrKeys, One day last Summer, I had the boat all geared up, fishing poles, tackle, bait, trailer hooked up to the truck and ready to go and pick up Big John.. everything was looking like a normal deep sea fishing trip like every week for the last 10 years. When I opened my back gate getting ready to leave for the ramp, I 'heard' the Lord say "you're done with fishing". That was it, nothing more. That was all He said. and in that moment, I physically felt something being removed from me.. the 'desire' to do the intense and thrilling deep sea fishing.. was gone. Of course, I still went to pick up John and we went out a few more times but honestly, the excitement, thrill and joy of fishing was gone. Little did I know that within a few months, God would put me on a new path with just as much passion and pleasure as I had with fishing... and I am developing a green thumb. I am actually doing a lot more 'physical' exertion doing this gardening, building and casting than I ever did fishing because here in Florida, I have to tend to these plants nearly all day. Out in the ocean, the temperature was always several degrees cooler due to the regulating effect of the ocean but here on land, when it is 93 degrees and 95% humidity... boy it is oppressive heat. On average, I have to change my soaked t-shirt 3 times a day and several times a day, escape indoors for an hour or 2 and cool down before venturing out again. And yes, I sold the boat but will be going out with Gary in the Fall when the temps drop into the 80's.

Great to see you Salty. I tried growing bamboo last year. Unsuccessful.
@SaltyKayak
@SaltyKayak 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike. On about half of the 'nodes' I put hormone rooting powder. I also used a file and 'wounded' the area around the node. I have seen and read that scarring the area around the node, stimulates the rooting cells. Plus the hormone powder (or gel) jump starts the root production. So far, I was able to recover maybe 100 sections of bamboo cuttings and get them in the ground in time before they dried too much. Of the 100 or so I got in the ground, so far, I can tell that only maybe 25% have started. Since I just planted seeds, it will be a week or 2 before I will see any results from them. My advice Mike is DON'T buy creeping bamboo seeds or use cuttings from creeping bamboo unless you live in the country and have acres between you and your neighbors.
@SaltyKayak
@SaltyKayak 3 жыл бұрын
And also Mike, if you plant bamboo from cuttings, don't expect to see anything sprouting for at least 2 months and I have heard, some species can take up to a year to 'show-up'. The DNA in them has a code that when they are cut, it is time to go dormant until conditions are adequate for regrowth to begin.

@@SaltyKayak I had purchased some seeds. Couldn't get them to germinate. I found out later they have to be at 85 degrees for 2 weeks before they will germinate.
