If you have a gas dive compressor, you can mount an alternator or genny on it's frame. Remove belt from compressor and put on alt/gen. One engine serves two purposes. Beats have to run main to charge batteries.

Great vid Rick. You really know how to explain things. Raymarine couldn't ask for a better agent than you. Let's have a thorough review when you have tested the equipment. I think in general equipment and technical solutions on different boats could be interesting to many boat interested viewers. And...I personally look forward to see if you get some interviews with other cruisers regarding how they made it possible to go full time cruising.

Great videos. If you don't mind I have a question for you. I see a number of full time cruisers who do not use a wind vane steering system. Is there a reason for not having a non electric system?

At about 9.25 Rick starts mentioning StarBoard and I'm about to complain because anyone who's had to rely upon it knows that Starboard is the worst for making watertight covers, etc. No bedding compounds or caulks stick to it and it yellows and grows more brittle with age. Then see how Rick redeems himself by routing a gasket groove in the bottom-- about the only way the Starboard can be used responsibly in this application. Well-done, Rick.

Hey Rick, nice job on the install. Very cool set of upgrades. Any thoughts on using silicon dielectric grease on all electrical connections regardless of the o-ring seals on the connectors? I have found that using the dielectric grease on all my electrical connections that see salt spray are in like new condition with zero corrosion after 7 years of use. Cheap insurance. Also looks like its time to polish the compass globe, it looks to be getting a tad cloudy.
@SailingSophisticatedLady
@SailingSophisticatedLady 8 жыл бұрын
+insaynbcr yes, I have found similar solution in spraying everything with Corrosion-X... it is excellent and will leave a residual coating on everything to resist even salt air intrusion, without affecting conductivity of the connections. And yes, the compass globes need polishing every 6 months or so, especially when we've been sailing extensively and they see more sun! :)

Great vid, Rick! Considering that electronics and nav. equipment are always changing, wouldn't it be nice if the boat mfrs. used replaceable panels around the pilot stations? I'm guessing they could do it for
@SailingSophisticatedLady
@SailingSophisticatedLady 8 жыл бұрын
+Brian Mowers would be great but likely hard to implement since every installation is different... they make custom pods for the gauges but not sure about panels
@dianaofburlington5172
@dianaofburlington5172 8 жыл бұрын
+Brian Mowers - I like the idea very much! The usual location for such panels could be made to accommodate a variety of sizes, about like Sophisticated Lady's side pedestal/perch there, and have these able to be removed/modified/exchanged as necessary. Further the gauge manufacturers could settle on something like a 100-mm hole-- rarely is that inadequate for just about any single-function or small-scree multifunction instrument. The point about the pods is valid; but the mounting-on-the-flat application still exists, such as in the aft end of the cabin trunk, for example. It's time the electronics manufacturers each realized he's not the only one in the business! Thanks, as ever, for the fabulous informational series, Rick! The 'Just Another Day' sequence has been riveting.

Safety glasses Rick! Was always concerned about daisy chaining gauges together, makes it a bit more challenging when (if) you're trying to diagnose a problem with instrumentation or a sensor at sea. Your thoughts?
@SailingSophisticatedLady
@SailingSophisticatedLady 8 жыл бұрын
+srok62 if they are daisy chained makes it fairly simple... if they are all out, then it is a problem at the source of the chain.. if functionality stops mid-chain then there is a problem with one specific cable linking the chain.. just have to look there.
@srok62

The key to using RM's EV AP is to have RM instruments. WInd instruments for example from another company will not interface with the RM AP. Even with the special Seatalkng to N2K cable. I'm speaking from experience. This regardless of RM's claiming to be N2K compatible. What I found is the P70 control will tell you it "sees" the other instruments but will not receive the data packets successfully when in use. Very frustrating. So in general, if you're not planning on replacing all instruments with RM, don't get this AP.

Hey Rick: I have a Raytheon ST 6000+ autopilot, a ST80 Masterview, a ST 80 wind and a secondary ST 80 masterview autohelm. This looks like a pretty good replacement system. Just curious did you buy it as a package and receive any kind of discount off of it or piece by piece just curious what was the total damage if you don't mind me asking? And have you been satisfied with it after the learning curve of a new electronics?!?! I also have a pretty new Ray Marine chart plotter which looks like I could use this system that you have purchased in conjunction with that chart plotter as a head unit.
@SailingSophisticatedLady
@SailingSophisticatedLady 8 жыл бұрын
+Mike Ridderhoff I had similar system to yours but with ST50 instruments.. the new system has performed flawlessly for over a year now and is much more accurate and stable than previous system. I have also just purchased the Raymarine a98 chartplotter that will become the head of the system and even allow functionality and control of system available through apps on iPad or iPhone with wifi onboard

I watched again, yes , I did see the autopilot linkage making contact with the fiberglass. I saw your new mount connection there. it's too thick , why not make a thinner plate out of stainless?
@SailingSophisticatedLady
@SailingSophisticatedLady 8 жыл бұрын
+offplanetevent The starboard needs to be at least 1/2" thick otherwise the linear actuator will rub against the quadrant... the piece you see is not fiberglass, it is just a rubber fender that is in storage under the rudder quadrant
@offplanetevent

+Rick Moore This is actually a valid application for StarBoard in that any inadvertent contact or binding will gradually wear it to where it should be. So long as mounting holes don't elongate, the plastic is perfectly adequate in this role. So-- good choice.

Did he used the word ..> Starboard < wrongly a few times in a row ? or is it my bad english ?? He said I took this piece of simple starboard ( at 9.34 ) and a few times again.using starboard.wrongly.

It's the brand name of the white polymer material he uses as a mount for the instruments. It is a type of plastic marine timber, used instead of wood on modern boats. It is manufactured under this brand by King Plastic Corporation.

Me, i went , as a passager, to Corn islands, on a speed boat to go and a fishing boat to come back and it was anough. Not my thing. Looking at nice sceneries , pictures, is fun. I find people travelling on sea quite brave. Doing paramotor for me is anough . Scare of the ocean. And being in the middle of nowhere, with risk of storm or any problems.
