24 hour sub dial? If it does count 24 hours then thats brilliant for 24 hour races. Clearly youve never heard of 24 hours of le mans or nurburgring?! This watch would really perform in those circumstances. Not only because it is solar. Which charges under any light they say. But that it wont have any spring deviation or requiring of charging where a rolex would. Meaning this is extremely accurate for racing. In terms of calculating velocities. 24 hours is probably used to divide acceleration into geological positioning as well. Making that easier. Ive never been trained to use a chronograph. But the ability to have 24 increments helps navigate on foot too. Im sure that in space. And the farther away from earth you get. The 24 hour sub dial helps calculate your position and the rotation of earth. Counter to your movements. Also its great for military time.

Good review. For me the selling points on this watch are the smooth running center hand. I try to stay away from watches with dead-beat seconds, as is common on too many quartz movements. The other selling point is the 24 hour dial. My Omega Speedmaster caliber 1045 also has a 24 hour dial. This becomes particularly useful when starting up the watch when it has not run for a while. I instantly know when it is safe to set the date. Without the 24 hour dial the only safe method is to keep turning the hands until the date changes, then turn the hands 5 more hours and set the correct date. Although this watch does not look anything like any of my caliber 6139’s, I still like it and will purchase one.
@JusttheWatch3 жыл бұрын
That's the only reason I like 24 hour subdials. However with this being a solar quartz, it's kind of a set it once and never have to mess with it again, so I feel like the 24 hour subdial isn't really useful in this case.

Great review, thank you once again ! That said….. why would I go and buy this watch from Seiko ? I have nothing against Seiko, I love the brand I own 6 Seiko’s, and this watch look beautiful…. but at about 1000$ retail Canadian that’s way too much for a simple quartz watch, yes it has Sapphire crystal, milled clasp, solid end links, and is Solar….. but I can buy a Pagani Design Daytona Homage PD-1644 with sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel, milled clasp, solid end links, and with a Seiko VK63 Meca-Quartz movement for around 80$ Canadian, which I did, and am very happy about it. You could buy 10 Pagani PD-1644 for the price of one Seiko. Something else I noticed, why don’t more people on youtube bash Seiko or Tissot for that matter, for producing a watch “ hommage/copy “ of a Rolex Daytona ? Why ? Because it has the Seiko or Tissot name/brand on the watch ? Because of their history in the world of watch making ? I still find it a little hypocritical when that happens, but that’s my opinion….. Thank you and keep the videos coming.

Great review/coverage. I don't worry about the whole Daytona thing...I think people take the whole "homage" thing way too far anyway. Usually Rolex fanboys...Rolex certainly doesn't own the 3 register chronograph OR the Panda dial OR coloured dial faces ie. the recent comparisons between the OP and the new Omega AT's. Get over it people...This Seiko is a nice 39mm quartz tri-register chrono and it's a $600 Seiko. The reality is that's like 1/40th of the price to get a Daytona right now and I wouldn't call anyone's Seiko Speed timer a Daytona homage. Keep up the great coverage of these more budget friendly or affordable segment!

I recently picked up this watch at a local watch store. I wasn’t looking for it but once it was pointed out to me as a Seiko Panda watch I had to give it a second look. I don’t know what happened but once I put on, it took me by surprise! For me of course, once I placed it on my wrist, it had a totally different look and feel. I was instantly enamored! I browse watches at stores and try them on but none have ever struck me as this watch did. I am absolutely not a collector, but do own my fair share of watches, 24 or so I believe. Being a big fan of Timex Marlin watches, while purchasing a Seiko SRPH78 Limited Edition Seiko Presage, I was shown this Panda/Speedtimer SSC813P1. Needless to say, I ended up walking away with two watches. Quite a few people complain about the 24 hour dial or the subdial as well as the price. Though I like the look of the chronograph, I would never use that function in anything I do. Most cell phones have that capability, and my iPhone does that job just fine whenever I am timing something for work. Subdials do not bother me in the least and the price was greatly reduced on both watches, that’s more so due to the fact that I am a good customer. The prices I paid were well below list price, I did some research and found the pricing to be very fair. Again, this Panda watch was an impulse buy but by far is now one of my favorites in my collection, yes, even above the Marlins. Thank you for such a great review on this watch! Your work is amazing!

Hahaha I assumed this was a mecaquartz too & just deleted a comment where i complained it was the wrong VK movement bc 'the other' has a 12hr counter. I realised a while ago that watch companies, retailers & reviewers (most!) have no interest in chronographs as actual stopwatches hence why literally no one ever discusses the pros & cons of the ubiquitous 30min subdials on mechanical chronos and why it's almost impossible to buy one with a centrally mounted 60min counter - and even harder to add a 12hr counter. So my best guess is Seiko know people (inc watch nerds/fans) who buy chronos do so bc they like the watches 'with the little clocks on the dials' and a 24hr dial is at least useful for setting the date. After hearing you explain why the subdials look the way they do i love them - their functionality makes their appearance quite striking and i like that. Love that power indicator too. Hate the no12hr dial though... not sure I could get past that.

Great review Dave, love your honesty. I agree with you, for the price, a more quality watch is expected…

This is such an excellent video. I think you've just persuaded me to get this. 😁

Excellent review. You have hit the nail on the head - this is a high priced watch, but Seiko doesn't give you very much for the money. No titanium case/bracelet, no atomic time sync, etc. Interestingly, Orient (Seiko Epson) offers the WV0041TX SOLAR PANDA for around $200. If you want a Seiko Panda Chrono with a solar powered movement, then the Orient is a better value.

An excellent and honest review as always Dave. I have one reserved and will collect next week. Priced around £600 in the UK which is probably expensive but that's just the way it is here. Nevertheless I am really looking forward to it.

Maybe worth waiting to see if Creation Watches get it in stock?

Very nice review I'm not quite sure about the complaints... maybe lack of finishing is ok but having solar panels in the subdials? that's pretty genius if u ask me, they look nice and the watch looks very nice... price surely bit too high...

It's a very nice watch, I'm not too worried about the subdials, and it is very attractive. I'd buy it, but not for $675.

Thank you so much, I was actually going to buy this watch as my entry to collecting. I still might just because I wish I could afford a Daytona and this is a nice affordable option.

If you’re in Australia you can pick one of these up for 638 AUD (405 USD) at Watch Depot, down from 1050. That’s incredible value. I got the SSC911P for $60 more though.

The solar is big interest to me. I find that interesting. Never liked quartz for the need of a battery. While these should be relentlessly charged and thus more accurate. If its not more accurate than that rolex. Then seiko is lowering quality to allow it.

My vote is with you: either put something useful in place of the 24 hour subdial or make it dual time. Useless as is. $500 maybe $700 not chance. Thanks for another excellent review, well thought out and well produced!

I found my speed master in 2003 on sale and I jumped on it only to fines out later that what I had was actually a reduced. To this day I still think it looks a bit dainty. I would love this watch but I just don’t think it has the size that I want in a chronograph.

Good review. Thanks for sharing. With regard to price, currently you can’t even find these watches at list price and most of them are selling for over 1000 USD.

Think the stock bracelet is just OK. Its definitely not built for the watch. That being said I got 25% off mine so that price for me is the right price. You are right about the face finishing its around the same as some of the Seiko Neo chronographs but the case crown and pushers are a step up. The watch wears great and its very pretty. I'd have paid more for a better bracelet and auto movement. Nice Review Dave
