Though the 70s may have been a booming time for the theremin, the original commenter was correct that tours done by musicians such as Clara Rockwell were the main reason for the instruments’ popularity :)

ive never had the chance to try a theramin, but from what i understand, professional players use a set of hand shapes to cover a few notes of a scale without moving the rest of their arm, and then move other parts of their arm to specific positions to cover the next few notes using the same series of hand shapes. kind of like a violinist having 3-4 notes on a string using their fingers, then moving their whole hand up the board to a different position to access the next 3-4 notes of that string.
