DM's version has + realism but the fact that Erasure covers this song is what matters. Their body of work possesses immaculate character: it is wonderful. "What do you want out of life?" "I want to leave behind a body of work that is most often described as wonderful, that produces the following reactions..." u know? All their songs send a message that is objectively true, that is so easy to neglect. DM's version is about adolescents. Andy is saying he still feels this way, maybe all the time.

Andy pullled this song, big time. The synths sound like a karaoke machine, and it's Vince! He is the reason Depeche Mode exists. He should have put more time into it. I know what he can do, and this is not his best. Andy kicked ass here. Though he is no Dave Gahan, he stood up to the challenge and delivered very well. Kudos.

But it sounds exactly as the original analog equiment Vince played with DM. And those who are comparing versions. Its not an studio version. Not everytime David Gahan sang it well...many times with erased vocal or with dysphonia!! And a lot of times better too. It depends. Andy could have sang a lot of Yazoo/The Assembly songs and Depeche Mode early stuff too.
