Thank you RazingHel. As an educator who teaches kids IT (and online research falls under this category), I can't agree more. You voiced out eloquently exactly why I find such a remark to be doing more of a disservice than anything else. Even a 6-year-old understand that using Google helps them find answers. So it's really insulting to just tell people to "google it". Yes, there are some who are just too lazy to do basic research that it's really annoying to come across such people on forums/communities looking for quick answers without doing at least some form of the legwork themselves first. But otherwise, for the most part, people ask online after they already tried googling it and need help answering something which sometimes Google A.I./algorithms are just unable to give because of its inability to infer, or just them searching using the wrong kind of keywords. Also, researching online is a bit of like wading through a swamp of an information dump. It's a messy place (sometimes even dangerous) because there's so much misinformation out there, and people lack the discernment to separate good, legitimate sources from the bad ones. Telling someone to google it is like sending a noob out into an open field; they're vulnerable and need someone who has more knowledge and experience to point them in the right direction to search and avoid some common pitfalls.

One of the most frustrating things for me is when I google something, find a forum thread, and the only responses are "just google it"

I am definitively on your side there. "Just google it" is basically saying "ask someone else" but advanced. And especially in your example with a community/group, that is actually exactly what they person who was asking did.

I think the biggest cause of the 'just google it' response is more related to the constant barrage of repeat questions veteran players tend to receive. Playing don't starve together for example, the question of how to do X (ignoring the most common 'where is base'). It is not easy to respond when you are in the middle of something, especially when it requires a detailed answer to what most think of as simple questions. I don't say goggle it, I tend to refer people to youtube as it has more easily reviewed information, and as a youtuber, you should have no issue with that variant. I understand trying to shy away from being detached, or even rude, but there is also the problem of people doing no research and just jumping right in to something. Normally that in and of itself is fine, but when you rely on others for all of your information doing no research yourself is certainly a problem. As an old school gamer, I am a strong advocate for just trying it out yourself under your own willpower, don't use cheats or mods until after the game has been beaten at least once, try to figure out as much as you can yourself because it is so much more rewarding to find things yourself then to have someone else play the game for you by proxy through advice.

You would be surprised how often people don't do even basic searches for information in a world where we have access to the largest information database man has ever known at their fingertips.

It's really not tho. I basically learned all of my jobs required skills by googling things no industry related degree because I demonstrated that I taught myself all the necessary skills myself by googling

“Idk just google it” is a good response if you *have* to give some answer.

Yes, those experts just forgot people can learn and give up on newbies. But this is not true.
