The C-17 Globemaster serves as the U.S. Air Force’s primary strategic lift aircraft for global transport of troops and equipment. The C-17 is capable of rapid strategic delivery of troops and all types of cargo to main operating bases or directly to forward bases in the deployment area. The aircraft can perform tactical airlift and airdrop missions and can transport litters and ambulatory patients during aeromedical evacuations when required. The inherent flexibility and performance of the C-17 force improve the ability of the total airlift system to fulfill the worldwide air mobility requirements of the United States.

My old man worked at McDonnell Douglas's Long Beach, CA Plant when the C-17 took it’s first flight. Interestingly, his father-in-law, my grandfather, worked there at the same time! So the Globemaster III has a special place in my heart🙂

As a airborne infantry vet, I loved the C-17. It was like a Cadillac to jump. I’ll always have love for the C-130, but the 17 is super smooth and everyone gets their own seat, as opposed to being piled on top of each other on a cargo net bench lol. We flew C-17s from Alaska to Australia non stop, did an in flight rig, then jumped into Australia on a training mission. A C-17 also carried me on a litter to Germany from Iraq when I was wounded in action. Between the C-5, C-17, and C-130 we have a great fleet of fixed wing cargo/utility aircraft.

Just before McDD (original contractor) was bought by Boeing, right after they released this plane, I built two sets of 17 racks of test gear to simulate opens and shorts to test 17 of the 51 on board computers in these things. They had "peg boards" that allowed the testers to simulate any open or shorts in the cabling and demonstrate proper redundant system turnover and activation. It was a pretty cool job and we had two of the head-up units with us to make sure the slide trays on those two racks worked correctly. Lots and lots of inter-rack cable sets. It was a fun job and I am proud that I was a part of it. That was at a place called AP Labs in San Diego. I went on to work at ViaSat and made multiple sets of racks that were called "Stimulators" which were used down at the big Hughes anechoic chamber in Texas to test the F-22 and F-35 and B-1, etc. Hundreds of channels synched up to nanoseconds of each other. That was like 9 racks each and I built three sets of them.

I’ve been inside a C17 at a local airshow. Inside the cargo area is a huge space that could accommodate a huge range of cargo. The rear ramp means many types of vehicles can be driven in. More impressive is it’s short take off and landing capability. To see the C17 do short field landing is awesome.

Back in 1997 the Air Force had static air shows throughout the country, celebrating their 50th birthday. I went to the one at Standiford Field in Louisville, KY. I believe that was one of the greatest experiences that I've ever had. They had the C-17, the C-5 and they had the C-130 in every configuration that you could imagine. It was great.

Laying on the floor/ramp is authorized and even encouraged. Guys who are jumping never sit that long. They come from much closer in. While these planes can fly that long, they pretty much never do. Crew time-outs when it comes to flying time and our bases along the way means that it has a chance to land, refuel, crew rest, etc.

@@thomasblankinship98 Only a single AN-225 was ever made, bud, and even the AN-124 is bigger than the C-5. The other was never operational. It was never completed. The 225 was designed to carry rocket boosters and the Buran space shuttle. 55 AN-124s were built and they were never made to one-up the C-5 as it was meant to be a civilian outsized cargo carrier from the start, unlike the C-5 which was only meant to be military. Russia is now designing its own, updated, military AN-124-102.

I think of comparisons: it's about the same length of a C-141 but much fatter and wider for larger cargo. It's about 2/3 the size of the C-5 which performed amazingly in Vietnam and other places.

I worked as a structural design engineer for MacDac on the wing design program (I designed the fittings that attach the flaps to the wing). Extremely thin wing for a plane this size, but still pretty roomy to design within compared to most other wings I’ve worked on! Very successful design overall, obviously.

There's one flying around with a dent in her tail. That's where my paratrooper son got blown into the tail during a very windy jump. His helmet made contact. He was scrambled a bit but walked away and jumped another day. Glad he's done with that job and gone on to an occupation that is not as hazardous and pays better. The C17 is still one of my favorite aircraft.

When the mission requires added capability, an Air Transportable Galley/Lavatory (ATGL), a Distinguished Visitor (DV) pallet, or a Command and Control (C2) Module can be rolled on. These have lavatories and increased waste storage.

My last deployment I was supervising force protection team in Afghanistan. One day I was managing the checkpoint for aircraft traffic entering the active runway, keeping TCN (Third Country Nationals) construction crewmembers from driving vehicles where they weren't supposed to. Had a younger group of military/civilian security on site that weren't as experienced with confrontation. As I was managing the site, I had a TCN blow through our checkpoint on a tractor as a C-17 was approaching the active runway. I had to run up from the opposing checkpoint and charge my weapon in front of his to face to get him to stop. Any other military member would have taken the opportunity to shoot in the desert and get a medal but luckily for him I had enough time to think and sort out my aggression out there beforehand. He drove straight towards me but I charged up and was half a second from blowing his head off. He went back to the first checkpoint, I remember seeing the faces of the C-17 crew members as I escorted the driver back to checkpoint. Found out later the tractor driver got kicked off base 6 months earlier for running over and killing his fellow construction worker with an "earth mover" blade. If I did not realize how we control our own actions whether military or civilian and have the power to make decisions above general authority, I would have made a poorer decision that day. Killing is a final option, not the first.

You may want to sharpen the ol’ pencil when measuring the C-130 wingspan. 38’ foot wingspan is a Tad narrow for any operational C-130. I’ve seen a few that hit the tarmac that 38’ is a genuine measurement for overall wingspan...

I was part of the software team at GEC-Avionics for the HUD for this big-ole-gal and can clearly remember watching the maiden flight of P1 (with her long pointy red/white stripped nose probey thing) on 15 September 1991 and have a wall poster from McDonnell Douglas as a "thank you" for getting her to that major milestone. A few weeks later, Jane's did an article of that first test flight and in it was a picture underneath which was the caption "GEC's HUD in TOGA mode showing FMA windows", the picture was a completely blank black square - so not too far from the truth at that time ;-)

I made simulator racks for those HUDs that they bought from AP Labs right before the buy out by Boeing. It had two mount slides on it and a peg board to simulate opens and shorts to ensure that the redundant systems kicked in and worked right. Other racks for 16 of the onboard systems to check proper redundant system operation as well. Two sets of each, so they even ordered the test systems in redundant fashion. :-)

@@cosmicraysshotsintothelight We had an "Independent Test Group" who were a mix of hardware and software engineers that had one of our HUDs connected to a test bench consisting of various Logic Analysers and bespoke gear to give the HUD simulated data in order to test all of the HUD's functionality, as well as BIT, we even had a joystick connected to the test bench so we could "fly" the HUD while giving it the data for all sorts of simulated scenarios. That's as much involvement I had with the test setups, sure I had to do unit and integration test on the modules of code but other than "flying" the HUD that's as much involvement I had with the hardware - I never really understood most of it and still don't to this day, and the same applies for networks, mobile phones and printers!

They were simply meant to test the changeover function of how redundant hardware sets were/are supposed to operate. They had a pegboard where all the cables entered and exited and small 'shorting bars' in place to show normal connects and then to simulate a cabling short or open by (mis)placing or removing them, to see if the second unit kicked in. So we had two slide mounts on each rack made for each type of on board computer and pegboards above each as break out boxes for the cabling. Very simple stuff and no real electronic diagnostic hardware at all, IIRC. There was a master unit which was, IIR a VAX/VMS chassis with customer supplied boards and software. Probably written and supplied by yous guys. :-)

What an amazing plane!!.... I was an aircraft electrician on left wing of the prototype (stinger) C-17 at Mc Donnell Douglas plant in Long Beach, CA in the early 90's , I was the only AcE on 2nd shift, got to work with design engineers and inspectors, rerouting electrical wire assemblies & mounting support points for both leading and trailing edge, from fuselage joint to wing tip ...more. wire than any U.S. Military cargo aircraft do to it's FBW design. Was a great experience!!!!

The C-5 is Lockheed, just like the C-130, but the C-5 is Boeing (McDonnell-Douglas), so they’re more cousins than brothers.

Solid bird! I got a few flights on these.When I was stationed in the Sianai back in 2015,we would load 2 blackhawk helicopters inside for a trip to Germany for heavy maintence. the clearance is literately inches from the top of the rotor head to the center of the wing internally. Very Tight squeeze.

I was at Fort Lewis, WA, back in early 90s. That was back when it was C-130, C-141, and C-5 were the main air lift. Saw this new transport plane doing "touch and go" at the Army airfield and I didn't know what it was.
