Hello everyone,
You may be aware, but recently in the UK, we had snow.
So Lawrie decided to take out his little Dump truck - it couldn't possibly be a challenge to start could it?
If you like the piece of music in the video created by our tame music maker, you can find it here!
/ humptys-theme
A video featuring:
Lawrie - getting steadily colder.

Also, I have to say, Humpty is my favorite member of your fleet. I've grown to care about the other projects, and I originally came to your channel because of the Lawrie goes Loco series, but Humpty is the reason that I started binging your stuff on the road vehicles. it's one of those little vehicles that is just fare more adorable than it has any right to be, and I hope to see Humpty get onto what's broken now to have his bucket patched and straightened, and the steering fixed.

Lawrie, two things, 1. do what the old boys did, an oil soaked rag set alight and placed near the intake filter so that the engine can suck in some heat 2. please keep you thumb on the same side of the handle as your fingers, if the engine kicked or back fired the least would be a bandly bruised thumb or worst a broken thumb.

On cold days they would put a torch or a pan of charcoal under the motor and use quick start from a can. Worried about weight distribution put a few stone in the dumper or attach weights to the front frame. Bit late to the party on this, (I'm working through the entire channel in chronological order at the moment, and loving it) so you might have addressed the issues I'm about to comment on. I spent the summer of 1990 driving a very similar machine to Humpty and it was similarly great fun. The rental dumper was mechanically identical to Humpty, but had some "bodywork" differences. It had long since lost any identifying badging, so I don't know what it was. I know it had absolutely no brakes. Not too much of a problem, given the massive engine braking available. Anyhow, two things. First, I think Humpty is down on compression. The engine in the rental would have been impossible to spin over like that without use of the decompressor. Starting technique was to lift the decomp, wind up the flywheel to as high a speed as possible, then drop the decomp. It always fired on the first compression stroke. Mind, summer 1990 was quite warm, even when it was raining. Second, the steering. While there might be other issues, looking at the way the steering wheel goes up and down in the onboard footage, I think the steering box has lost one or both of the thrust bearings that hold the worm on the end of the column in place longitudinally. It looks as if the first turn of the wheel is just screwing the column up or down before it starts to apply any force to the nut or sector (depending on what sort of 'box it is). If so, it might not be that hard to fix, or at least bodge, so you've got proper steering. Like I said, possibly a bit late, but maybe marginally helpful. Love the channel. Keep it up.
@lmm
@lmm Жыл бұрын
The compression is possibly down, but I'm the only one who can turn it over when it's compressing. The others don't have enough strength to force it. Yes indeed, it's winding itself up or down before turnin the wheels. At some point I'll take it off and repair it or replace it with a land rover steering box.

Always park it at the top of a very big hill. I'm pretty sure something as agricultural as that will bump start if you try hard enough. Ben Nevis should do it. The Lister would have a cold start oil plunger on the intake side of the head to boost the compression for cold days like this. Fill it up with oil and press it in and extra compression wow. Mate you should also use the decompression lever to help turn it over easier and to help avoid breaking your arm if it kicks back on you. But good job getting it going though. I had one of these but with a twin cylinder Lister st2 Really cool old things hey. I've just purchased a 1985 benford.

Hi Lawrie, Great video, and well done for sticking with it, just thought id mention how good a video rebuilding the top end of this engine would be, it looks like a petter ava1 which is a very simple engine, and to change the service, rings, decoke and change the injector nozzle is only 50 pounds in parts? Add in a valve grind and you'll get heaps of compression. Just a thought. If you want to find parts, try Stationary engine parts .com

i still love that thing. what could be fun is if tractor events start up again you could take it show off. have to say though, that steering is quite scary to see lawrie. it looks like the steering wheel and shaft are actually unscrewing from something down below when you spin to the right and it goes back down when you spin to the left. maybe you could make an attachment that would let you spin it with a heavy drill (if you have one of course)? at least for the early portion when you are more trying to worm the cylinder up before it becomes realistic to hand crank it.
@lmm
@lmm 3 жыл бұрын
Once we can go out, I really want to take it to some shows. Steering is terrible. There's a bearing gone, so it winds up and down on the worm. Every time we go out I fear its going to fail. An adapter is a good idea, just need a suitable device with enough torque to turn it over!

@@lmm Well that's a poor design by Petter then I seen that model of site dumper with equipped with a single or twin cylinder Lister Diesel engine, worth more with the Lister through. Hope you find out what's wrong with the steering, on a side note check the injector as a weak spray pattern can cause hard start (even on warm days), as well as low compression, bad fuel filter and a clogged exhaust and air filtration system may also cause this as well. Just things to look at with older diesel equipment. Have a good night, afternoon or morning, best of luck from Australia.

Does humpty have independent steering brakes or are both brakes on the axle on one pedal? If they are independent, when your slipping, apply the brake for the wheel that is slipping, it'll make the open differential work for you.
