Thanks Tomo. I like this exercise and shared with a couple of my students. I thought you might enjoy this: one of my students told me they liked it because of how eerie and spooky it sounded. I loved her observation because it’s so easy to get lost in thinking about fingerings, chromaticism, etc. and forget about the emotional impact that music has. Even when it’s just a warm-up!

And when I do manage to sit down with my guitar, I can't figure out what to do! When I try playing a song, I just get frustrated with the technical aspects, like proper fingering, picking, and strumming. (Up strums are still tricky for me for some reason.) But I feel like I'll learn a lot more and get more out of practice by doing this!

It's really refreshing to see your pinky doing the same thing as mine when it's not needed, it just flies away. While these shredheads cry when they witness this, most, and even some of the most successful guitarists do it. Why work on something that doesn't bother you? Timing and accuracy are key, and not having the toughest practice time! although it's fun to see "good guitar playing" change or be interpreted like, dude, it must be frustrating at first! It is almost as if a new art of practice is being born. And their credo is, if it's not as hell demanding, then it's not good music!!! Maybe, Tomo, you explain why you not focus on having the pinky hovering over the string all the time? I'm sure there a many watching shredders who would like to know ur thoughts about that. and of cause i like that practice lesson much

Hi Tomo! Thank you for your lessons. I have a maybe weird question. I am at the moment trying to balance teaching math and other subjects to highschool students, doing my own part-time work at the same time as gaining a better grasp of music theory. This might be a strange question, but how do I go about finding a good practicing method for guitar playing that also extends my music theory knowledge (which is very beginner), while having fun, and allowing time for everything else that I like doing. Maybe sometime in the future I would like to focus more on creating my own songs, and so I’d like to find a sustainable and manageable way to slowly keep improving as a player. Again, maybe this is a strange question, but thank you again for taking your time to make these KZbin videos!

TomoFujitaMusic thank you! I’ll have a look at my favorite songs and try to learn them to their fullest! My goal is to one day be able to play Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson and fully understand all of the chord progressions and scales he uses within the song, and maybe create something just as beautiful as his masterpiece. That’s a very difficult song, so I’m going to stick to some easier ones I know for now and really try to get the chord progressions, the scales that fit and just keep practicing! Thank you for being so helpful!

I have a question. For example, if I'm playing 2nd note (with my middle finger), should I keep my pointer finger over the 1st note? Or can I lift it? Nice video!

You don't have to lift it, but it's not a requirement to keep holding that one down. Depending on what you are playing, I often leave my 1st finger in place if I am going to use that note again right after. (Like if I was going to play a G. an A, and then back to a G I would just leave my finger there.)

I noticed that you raise your pinky finger too much when doing the exercise. Do you think this can be fixed, because I have the same problem.?
@TomoFujitaMusic5 жыл бұрын
You can fix that if you practice very slowly. New Tomo Fujita USA WebSite tomojustfunky.com

Internet is good but also distraction of course, too many guitar & music lesson @.@ Btw I'm doing Spider Routine (from The-Art-of-Guitar) but still stuck when going down from the neck. Maybe I'll add this too, and do it slowly first (repeat 3 times, slow slow slow XD)

Hi, Tomo. My problem isn't distractions, it's practising. I hate practising. I just want to get better without practising. Is there a solution for this? Something I can put under my pillow while I sleep? An injection of some sort?
@TomoFujitaMusic5 жыл бұрын
Nobody really like practicing. Good one is could be very boring. So this exercise. Just do one string then. One minute! Practice to be patient! Or try to understand why this exercise is important for you? New Tomo Fujita USA WebSite tomojustfunky.com
