The cerusing process we demonstrate in this video can transform your dated oak finish to a new fresh, clean look. Side-step the hard work of a traditional refinish; with all the time spent stripping, sanding and cleaning up the mess.
Watch how we take a typical kitchen cabinet upper through the steps needed to complete this magical transformation.

Fashionable? Who decides what fashionable? Have in your home what YOU decide to have and stay away from everything fashionable as this only shows you don't have your own style. Don't be afraid to have what you like, be strong minded and wait till others start copying you!!!😂 But this video is nice, presented by a kind sounding man. I just heard in the UK, we have to repaint our kitchens dark green!!! So, after everyone has had their kitchen repainted grey, now, GREY IS OUT, we were told and only GREEN IS IN, we were told. I don't badge, keep my kitchen unpainted and I wait till everyone strips through all these colours, see the grey and green, to get their unpainted look!! And I'd be laughing and laughing when someone says : " so you had your kitchen stripped already?"

Beautiful. All kinds of character possible with combinations of base coat, glaze and finish. Painting wood is not, in my opinion, a sin or a crime. We should feel liberated in choosing the surface that suits and pleases us. It’s a personal experience. If someone doesn’t agree, they’re free to choose with their own pieces. Different strokes, folks. ✌️

Great job, Wes! I've refinished many oak pieces but haven't done cabinets yet. I have found that using old t-shirts or some other soft lint free cotton cloth for wiping off (and on) your stain works so much better than using paper towels. Lot less waste & better saturation imo. All that said you did a fantastic job in updating these cabinets.

This primer is great for raw wood (I used it on pine trim) but it doesn’t cover knots and doesn’t block stains. It builds up nicely and allows for sanding for a smooth finish. On cabinets with polyurethane finish I would use the SW extreme bond primer instead.

How do you know if you have a polyurethane finish??
@thegoodthebadandtheugly9920
@thegoodthebadandtheugly9920 2 жыл бұрын
@@mangos2888 anytime you have a clear finish over stain, it's highly likely to be lacquer or polyurethane and you'll need to use one of three primers, lacquer undercoater, oil base primer or now they have a water base (extreme bond primer) 😉
@putster47
@putster47 9 ай бұрын
@@mangos2888if it's not painted then it has a clear finish on it. That is, if it's a finished product inside your home. I only day that because you can stain wood without putting a finish on top of it in the case it's something like a project that hasn't been completed. In any case it's always best to lightly sand and primer to remove any grease/oils do paint will stick better.

I WAS INTRIGUED WITH THIS PROCESS AS IT WAS WHAT i HAD DONE TO MY FRONT DOUBLE DOORS YEARS AGO, MYSELF. ONLY IT WAS WITHOUT THE WIRE BRUSH AS IT WAS A NEW THERMATRU DOOR, WHICH IS MADE OF FIBERGLASS, WHICH HAS A POLYSTYRENE INSULATOR IN BETWEEN. AND IT IS AMAZING HOW COOL IT KEEPS MY HOME..IT WAS WONDERFUL TO FIND THESE, AS IT DOES NOT TRANSFER THE HEAT INTO THE HOUSE. BEFORE THAT, MY HOUSE WAS AN OVEN AND EVERY TIME THE SUN WENT DOWN, IT GOT WORSE SINCE THE DOOR IS FACING THE WEST. SO, ALL IN ALL, IT WAS MY FIRST TIME TO FINISH ANYTHING AND I LOVED THE PROCESS, MUCH LIKE WHAT YOU ARE SHOWING. I had those golden oak cabinets - I washed them done really well with TSP then applied Mission Oak stain with satin urethane - it took so well - made them darker and got rid of that bland yellow - then a took a black paint and kind of darkened the edges, corners & crevices of the panels - sort of like a glaze - they came out so well - I couldn’t veer too far off course because all of the trim and moldings in the house are oak, but those cabinets were just too yellow - and they have so much more dimension now - I love them

Wes, I love this cerusing technique for redoing the kitchen cabinets or other cabinets in the house. I have the same in my house although my cabinets are made from ash wood. I'm seriously thinking of doing this to my kitchen cabinets. I do have one question though & it may be a stupid question. After you've changed the color of the outside, what do you do with the color of the inside of the cabinet which is the golden oak? Do you paint it the color of the primer you put on it or what? It's impossible to ceruse the inside of the cabinets. Actually in the lower cabinets it will be impossible to even paint those areas that go back into the counter that you can never reach. I love your videos! Thank you so much for putting this detailed information out there & also responding to people's questions!

Anything considered outdated is that in only certain people’s minds. I love oak and would give my eye teeth to have real oak cabinets instead of the homemade plywood cabinets put in this farmhouse in 1965. But at least they are newer than the cabinets in my laundry room that were built in 1932. Remember to be grateful for what you have. If you can change it, fine. Just don’t talk down other’s choices. Thanks for the idea, I redid my bathroom cabinets with this method. Doesn't look like youtube lets me post links to show a picture though. I thought it came out reasonably well. Now to work on my kitchen with it, the bathroom was more of a practice run. I used the same primer tinted to Pearly White. I used Rust-Oleum cabinet transformations Java Brown glaze, which went on thinner so I let it soak for 5 mins before lightly wiping it off. One panel came out a little darker because I stripped it (it was my test piece, which I used for various other stain/paint approaches). The other panels I just wiped with acetone, which isn’t quite as bad as lacquer thinner.

Your work and explanations are great! As someone who likes to do the minimum ( I know I shouldn’t), can you please explain why you did two coats or primer? Since you want to reveal the grain when you stain and rub a lot of the paint and stain off, why is it necessary to do the two coats of primer?

Absolutely beautiful job! Not to mention your explanations of the whole process. I am considering re-finishing walls and ceiling in every room of a tiny home I’ve purchased. It’s wall, ceiling ect are all pine with the same golden colour as your oak cabinet. Quite frankly, after 6 months of living in it , I’m sick of it. I want it to be white. What would you suggest to maintain all the natural pine knots ect to continue to show through. Do I need to apply a remover for the surface as it appears to have a coating of some kind or can I just sand? I’ve purchased a white stain, Benjamin Moore semi-solid. I cringe at the thought of how much work this will be but know it will be so worth it. I look forward to hearing your recommendations. Thanks from us newbies for your excellent teaching style. ❤️ from 🇨🇦.

To end up with the finish you described, I am sorry but you would have to start with bare wood. Try just sanding to see if the existing finish comes off easily but you may have to strip and then sand. You are right, its a lot of work but well worth it. Good luck. Wes

Cool effect. A polycrylic might be better for preserving the final color since it stays clear. Urethane yellows and you spent all that effort getting rid of the yellow tones.

I have these exact cabinets. I simply applied Glaze Effects by General Finishes in Van Dyke Brown and wiped off the excess. It turned my orange golden oak cabinets to a beautiful brown, much like this video (before he sanded off the glaze) But in half the time or less. I refinish all my bathroom doors and erased 20 years of wear and tear from raising kids. It cover scratches and nicks. I appreciate this guys patience but I like the look of wood and have too many cabinets to do these multiple steps. 😅

If it took you one whole day to do a cabinet, you can do ten cabinets in ten days. When you break it down that way, it doesn’t seem too bad. That’s what I intend to do. Not a rush. I don’t really care how long it takes me. As long as I don’t have to pay $3000.00 to paint my cabinets like my daughter did. Mine would probably be even more since I have more cabinets! I’m 74 years old. I have all the time in the world.😄

Im a Painter and Decorator. Best tip is wash kitchens units down with Sugar soap first. When dry, rub over surface with fine sandpaper. Dust off, then prime with a Product that has Shellac in it. Here in Britain we have "Zinnser" and "Blockade" 2 good products. Then i recommend an oil based Eggshell or satin finnish paint. Id avoid water based, unless its "B-Dec multi-surface" paint, which is an excellent product. Available in Matt satin and Gloss.

Every time I watch another of your videos on cerusing I'm one step closer to tackling my kitchen. But with 21 cabinets and 18 drawer fronts, 2floor to ceiling and one ceiling to counter top end panels - I'm a bit intimidated. One of the critical issues is while that is the color of my cabinets they are not oak - they are hickory. Will this technique work on hickory? I'm thinking of trying it on the inside of one of my bottom corner cabinet doors just to see how it comes out and how difficult it really is. Have you ever done this on hickory?
@dales949494
@dales949494 3 жыл бұрын
I think it would work in hickory as it does the oak. What you’re doing is highlighting the grain of the wood. You will have a different pattern of grain on the hickory compared to the oak, but it will still turn out beautiful.
@bbrown8353
@bbrown8353 3 жыл бұрын
@@dales949494 thanks for the reply, my concern is about the hardness, I tested this out on an old pine dresser I found. It came out pretty well on such a soft wood - but I did get a lot of extra "grain" from the wire brush creating marks in the soft wood. I love the different grains in my hickory and would hate to mar them - although I would probably be the only one to know it!

Now, to me the kitchen still looks old because of the cabinets. I was looking into hiring someone to paint them, but this is a beautiful option too.
