I adopted a rescue in Sydney, Australia around 2 years ago. I had no idea what I got. He's a foster fail. Looks exactly like the dog in the video. He even has the same "head cuddle" when getting pats and scratches. Most lovely little man. These are the best dogs ever. All personality and I couldn't agree more.. CUDDLES AND BISCUITS are everything to these pups. I had no idea what breed he was till seeing this. WOW. Thank you.

I’m in Cape Town and adopted puppy 7 months ago. Only realised 3 month ago that it was an Africanis. Most rescue dogs here are pitbull mixed breeds. Now it all make sense. Highly intelligent. Extremely alerted. Great watch dogs, but not aggressive and vary of strangers. Extremely loyal and demand attention. Good luck scrolling on your phone in front of an Africanis. They don’t understand why you ignore them and won’t settle for it. So happy with my boy.

My rescued Africanis, Stella saved my life. She was found in a winebox in Robertson and brought to me 2 days after we buried my darling sister that passed from cancer. Stella became my reason for getting up and face every day without my darling sister. Stella is now 5 years old. She "knew" from the get go that i NEEDED her. She sleeps with us and we live her to the moon and back. They truly are a special breed.

Found our little Africanus on the side of the road probably 6 weeks old. Fiancé decided to take her to puppy classes and was very upset how pure bred especially belgian malinos owners looked down on her being a township dog. The challenge was then on passed puppy, tweens classes then has gone on to do her KUSA bronze and silver canine good citizen award she will be doing gold later this year. Their motto has been giving pure breeds the middle claw 😂 she has also started man tracking as well. She goes to a K9 school specializing in training and rehabilitation the owners use her own a regular basis to train puppies and help dogs with special needs. Because of her sweet nature she is used for Emmet training for dog practitioners. At 3.5 years now she has never had a mistake in the house and we did no potty training she just knew. Has had zero vet visits besides her shots and claws. Hardly ever barks and warned my fiancé and warded off several rinkhals in the past. She has totally changed my attitude towards them especially growing up with only purebred gun dogs. Would recommend an Africanus every single time
@JustOfftheHighway18 күн бұрын
What a heartwarming story! Thanks for sharing. "Giving pure breeds the middle claw" 🤣🤣 I don't want to appear to criticise any dog, the problem is almost always at the other end of the leash, but you definitely have destroyed some stereotypes.

The Africanis is the Toyota Corolla of dog breeds. Extremely reliable, never gets sick, little maintenance required, they save you money, they out live their owners, they do everything themselves... oh and they don't bark for shit, only when it's really necessary. Love them❤

I adopted a runaway Africanis puppy living in a tiny, isolated South African coastal town at the time. The closest vet was a two hour drive away and only for a few hours once a week. She had a small wound which I treated as best I could and she came to work with me every day. Everybody loved her. Two weeks later she fell ill. I arranged for a friend to take her to the vet but when he arrived there the vet wasn't there. Long story short she had been infected by a bite from a rabid dog. What a terrible death to witness. Ended up driving for 5hrs only to have her put out of her misery at the nearest vet that was available. Needless to say the fallout was horrendous. Virtually everybody in town had to have a series of rabies shots. Broke my heart to see her in such agony and feeling so helpless.

My two dogs are typical of Africanus 'breeds'. They have naturally developed in rural Southern Africa for 1000's of years. We have the Ridgeback and the Boerbull, as well as the medium labrador type and the medium alsation type. Interbred dogs return to the generic strain of what a dog is, before prople started to bread them as show dogs. Natural selection and survival of the fittest have produced superior breeds of indigenous dogs.
@JustOfftheHighway2 жыл бұрын
I agree.

If it relies on natural selection it cannot, by definition, be a breed.

Like you, I love Dogtown and the work they do. However, the term AfriCanis was coined by the AfriCanis conservation society and refers to a specific indigenous landrace. The definition of a landrace is a population that is specifically isolated. Using the name AfriCanis for mix breed dogs is not only incorrect but undermines the conservation efforts of the society, whose name you have appropriated.
@JustOfftheHighway Жыл бұрын
I appreciate the conservation efforts. I have used the name as it is widely applied. If the name Africanis gives the dogs some added appeal and encourages adoption, I'm comfortable with that.
