Vostok proves that you don’t have to break the bank to have something original, with heritage and a great story.

Christopher Taylor - SO true! I recently bought an Aeromatic 1912 flieger style watch.. This particular watch is based on a 1942 Surveyors watch as used by the engineers working on the V Series rocket towards the end of WWII. As you most likely know at the end of the war both the USA & the USSR started hunting for anyone & everyone that worked on Germany's V Series Rocket program and tried their best to coax them over to their respective side of the Iron Curtain. It was primarily an intelligence based mission run by both countries Military Intelligence services. The V Series rockets morphed into the space race, the Military Intelligence services morphed into domestic bohemoths like the KGB & the CIA - thus the Cold War was born. The Yanks could utilise the best the "free" world could offer for its watches and the Soviets, keen to establish itself as the workers paradise bought entire factories of disused watch making machinery from the Swiss and elsewhere so as to become completely independent makers of in-house watches and out sprung the Vostok Amphibia in the 60's (I think...). Now *that* is a good story for a $70 watch!... and we didn't even mention.Yuri Gargarins Sturmanskie Space watch or the famous Strela Space watches. Fascinating stuff!

Got the same one, did the same thing. Love the case with the smooth bezel. Makes it look way more expensive than it is :) and the 2612B is a workhorse. The problem with the company is obviously the qualitiy control. fingerprints or hairs inside, i found them all. On the other hand they are pretty easy to regulate and to try out stuff. A nice project for little money. have fun.

I got my first Vostok recently, a Komanderski K-43. I got the one I got specifically because I loved everything about it stock (except the horrid leather strap), so it's staying like it is. But for Christmas, I might buy myself a pile of Amphibia parts and build a watch myself instead of buying a complete watch and modifying it. Case, crystal, movement, dial, hands, the whole thing. I recently bought both a Komandierski and an Amphibia. They are both rated at 200m water resistance now. I don’t know if you have watched Richard Perrets video on his Komandierski. I bought the same one (but without the date) and purchased the same nato strap as him. The Amphibia is a black dial with red scuba dude. I replaced the strap with a red and black striped nato and the fairly plain bezel with a seiko style flat black and 1/3 red coke bezel. Both look great. These are the first watches I have modified.
@GeckoCkCkCk5 жыл бұрын
Another awesome Vostok! Another way to regulate these watches is to set it and wear it for 48 hours or however you use it, to determine its rate error as you use the watch. Then put on the timegrapher, determine the rate in dial down position, then subtract the rate error while worn from the rate, and set the watch to that rate. Then it will keep great time the way you use the watch.

The bezels are great for timing brewing tea and eggs. Eggs in cold water, bring to boil, turn off in less than a minute, set bezel, wait for 12 minutes, swap for cold water at 12 minutes for perfect hard boiled eggs. Great to cook eggs by turning the boiling water off. They are fine if you forget them. Boiling the water out and exploding eggs can ruin your day.

Put a 12 hour bezel on and you have a poor man's dual timezone. Btw you never bring a metal inside the movement when adjusting the hairspring frequency. Use a toothpick with one end broken off to push against the lever. And never do it freehandedly - use one hand as a support to the toothpick and push the pick - resting on the support hand - using only two fingers of the other hand. The slightest touch on the hairspring will deform it irreversibly.

Go to a dive style bezel with a 12 hour gmt layout, make it a travel watch. The leather would make more sense and the extra Numerals would liven the dial up
