The worst thing you can say is that it isn't memorable. The action sequences in the first 3 films are so memorable. The plane fist fight and truck chase in Raiders. The conveyer fight and mine car chase in TOD. The Boat chase, the bike chase, the tank sequence in last crusade. All brilliantly made with practical effects. Some hubris to come in and try and make an Indiana Jones movie with CGI all over the place.

One thing I'll never understand about people is when they complained about Crystal Skull, and it having "aliens" (even if they were interdimensional beings and not specifically aliens but whatever lol) and what not. And now with this movie, and without spoilers, the 3rd act thing that happens. It's like, really? You had a guy who found the ark of the covenant that literally melted people and had souls or something coming out of it, then had a dude literally ripping people's hearts out and dunking them in molten lava, and then had the cup of christ that could give everlasting life. But aliens (and this movie's thing) are too far? Are you serious?
@calvinschaafsma202 Жыл бұрын
I think that the first 3 films fit together because the items he was going after were religious artifacts, where as the crystal skull and Antikythera aren’t and deal with factors well outside the realm of religion. I think the religious ones feel more realistic because it’s more grounded in reality to a lot of people as many people are Christians today, but I think today the concepts of Aliens and (SPOILER) Time travel, are a lot more outlandish than the religious ones. Could just be my opinion, but this is the best explanation I can think of for this case.

@@calvinschaafsma202 It's partly that perhaps, I just feel it's the anti-woke nonsense spilling into yet another movie that doesn't have anything remotely "woke" in it as it were. Yeah, the reviews on this are all over the place. I've read the plot synopsis. I know all the spoilers; I know exactly what to expect. And it doesn't sound like a bad movie to me. So I don't know where all the bad reviews are coming from... I guess it comes down to execution. What I have been noticing, however, is that people are saying things as a negative, forgetting that some of those exact same things happened in Raiders, they happened in Temple, etc. Even Jeremy Jahns' review yesterday... At one point I just rolled my eyes and said aloud, "That exact thing happened in Temple of Doom, dude. Did you complain then?" 😂 My gut feeling is that it comes down to people not wanting to see Indiana Jones aged and in a despondent mood.... But that's what James Mangold and (crucially) Harrison Ford WANTED. The only other thing I can think of is maybe the central relationship between Helena and Indy doesn't work. That's a legitimate complaint that some people have had. But then again, some people say it works fine. And some people are wishing they movie had Short Round. But the movie doesn't have Short Round, so we have to deal with what the movie is giving us. I have heard in just the past 3 days in four different reviews that it is either a wonderful, reverent send off to Indiana Jones which affirms his character as an older man.... and also a terrible send off to Indiana Jones which belittles him. People are all over the place on this. 😂 I have no idea what to expect beyond what I've read of the plot. So I'm just going to have to judge it when I see it myself. 😂 All I want is a movie better than Crystal Skull.

I think part of the problem with this film is that Original Indiana Jones was a love letter to the action/adventure movies 40 years in the past. Dial of Destiny was a love letter to Original Indiana Jones - which was 40 years in the past. And that made it kind of out of synch for what might have been better as a modern love letter to action/adventure films 80 years in the past. I think that’s why the “Short Round” wannabe fell flat. Even musically - it was kinda too much old school Indiana Jones - which somehow didn’t fit with what I would expect from a 2023 film maybe trying to harken back to music from 80 years ago. And, yeah, there was some chase scene where I was all, “Indiana chase scene, I think I can sleep through this one.” And I woke up shortly before they donned the diving gear. I enjoyed the film overall and think they did a great job accomplishing what they wanted to achieve: a 1980s style Indian Jones channeling 1940s cinematic tropes set in 1969. I think I might have preferred a 2023 style Indiana Jones set in 1969. Might also have been cool to try to channel 1960s action/adventure cinematic tropes.

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull or Dial of Destiny were never going to come close to recapturing the magic of the original trilogy, even with the same cast and creators. It was a different era of filmmaking in terms of style, writing and innovation. The original 3 are my favorite films of all time and nothing will change that. Even as a sub par Indiana Jones, I still enjoyed KOTCS for what it was and I am expecting to enjoy DOD the same way. As long as it's entertaining, I'm good. It won't taint my love for the original 3. Seeing Harrison Ford back in the Fedora again, giving it his all is reason enough for me to be excited to see it. This is the attitude I've been taking with all these legacy sequels to the movies I grew up with in the 80's and 90's. I just put them in separate boxes so to speak. Not talking about this channel, but I can't imagine having toxic fandom so bad that people create entire channels dedicated to trashing these franchise movies more than a year before they ever come out. Hollywood isn't purposely trying to piss all over your childhood. They produce a product for entertainment in the hopes of turning a profit. The creative team is ultimately responsible for whether it's a good movie or not, but movies take a lot of work to get made and they don't set a goal to make a bad movie. At the end of the day after all, it's just a movie.

@@kelel47 It is written this way because protagonists go through what is called an internal and external journey in their films. Because of James Mangold, my expectations were still like in the middle, but after a few reviews, like this one, they’ve clearly gone down. I guess people are getting tired of the “old beloved heroes being reluctant, grumpy and depressed” trope. And as we know there are two extreme segments on the internet right now and even the one that, normally, would’ve praised the addition of Phoebe Waller-Bridge no matter what, aren’t even that keen on her character and that, to me, is saying something. Speaking of that, Jeremy Jahns said something important : The fact that the writers/studio are NOT acknowledging how her own life is as miserable as Indiana Jones is a big problem because it means that her character is probably obnoxious, always the most intelligent in the room, has no flaws (according to the writers), will have the same kind of one liners like Indy and will save him at the end or something. That’s my guess. If we look at Top Gun Maverick, the John Wick series and probably the new Mission Impossible, that’s what the general audience wants. I’m not talking about gender/ethnicity here…give them a great new Underworld movie with Kate Beckinsale or Blade with Wesley Snipes and they will go see it. For mainstream movies, people want great stories with great characters that can appeal to everyone. That’s it.
@mohamedfawzy5843 Жыл бұрын
That's what I mean also we need new characters that audiences could fall in love with. Disney doesn't need to remake their franchises with some race and gender swapping and also we don't need Fast and Furious 100 to fall in love with the franchise. We need something new and fresh that has the way of classic film making in Hollywood something like Taxi Driver or the Godfather or the first 2 Terminator movies or Harry Potter something that feels unique and its plot doesn't fall apart if it does have a large franchise.

07:55 Because who produced the film? There’s your answer right there. James Mangold is one of the best and versatile director out there. I really don’t think it’s a case of “a bad day at the office” this time around. I’m guessing the first 20-30 mins is the movie he wanted to make and the rest is Disney’s vision because it seems to check all the same boxes they do with SW and the MCU. Endless banter, overuse of CGI, human drama put to the side in favour of (the same type of) humour or action and so on.

I find when Indy is fighting human villains and historical figures while grappling with matters of belief and faith, the movies work best. When we get into racial stereotypes and aliens and other fantasy elements, it's just another science fiction action movie, like Crystal Skull and Temple of Doom. Raiders and Last Crusade are still the best films of the series. From the trailers, it looks all right, and certainly having Karen Allen and John Rhys Davies back is reason enough to see the film. But from what I understand, Spielberg and Lucas aren't involved, and it's got similar themes to Crystal Skull, so it's not going to be anywhere near what the 1st and 3rd films of the original trilogy were. Granted, Godfather 3 wasn't anywhere near as good as the first 2, but it was still a good gangster movie for its time. I'm looking for a Godfather 3 level movie, not a Crystal Skull level movie.
@daykon6843 Жыл бұрын
In temple of dooms defense, the whole point of that story wasn’t the mystical aspect or the stones themselves, it’s about Indy fighting for something more than just fortune and glory. It’s also the only Indy movie where Indy’s participation in the films events actually makes a difference.

I think the reason it seemed that James Mangold's "director's voice" went away is because-- from all that I've heard-- Kathleen Kennedy inserted herself into the major creative process of the film.
@KingEdward27 Жыл бұрын
“From what I heard, the producer of the film was involved” you know the same person who was a producer on all of the Indiana Jones films. Lmao 😂 try harder please.
@PeterFields18 Жыл бұрын
@@KingEdward27 My point is: not all producers are creative people. Producers are good at bringing people and resources together that make up the production team. Producers are good at budgeting and problem-solving logistical issues. None of these elements have anything to do with the "artistry" or creativity of the script, direction, or performances. From all that I've read ("heard"), Kathy Kennedy (while being a producer) also thinks of herself as a creative and she makes sure that her creative story ideas make it into the final cut, which frequently causes the finished product to be uneven. Spielberg has even been quoted saying that Kathy Kennedy most often came up with the worst ideas in the room.

Remember those rumors about how they had to go back and do reshoots because test audiences hated the original ending? The problems with modern movies all stem from the writing. If you have a poor script, it doesn’t matter who you get to direct it, it’s like polishing a turd at that point. The great Indiana Jones movies had two writers, (Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is not a great movie, so that doesn’t count) so they were more than likely on the same page, heading in the right direction. This movie had four writers, which might explain things. Even James Mangold couldn’t save it. They should have stopped at The Last Crusade. Instead of adding to the franchise or the character, these last two movies feel like they’re ruining it.
