Okay I know this video is two years old, but I only watched it last night while I was having a wicked night of epic insomnia. I am learning to play the flute after a 30 year grade school break and I never had private instruction, only what I got in school. The concept that the embouchure/air stream/etc to have good tone with one note not being the same for all notes is something I was never taught or realized on my own. This is going to be majorly game changing for me. Thank you!

Honestly I think you are very good at explaining, and I think you are lovely and a beautiful person. I played the (recorder) flute (sopran and alt) as a kid/teen, it's been over 10 years and I forgot everything. Now I started playing again and fulfilled my big wish of getting my own flute and am now self-teaching it to myself. I started today, and was so discouraged and sad because getting a tone is so hard and everything confused me. I now do some research and gladly there are a couple of guides/tutorials. I am so glad I found your channel! I really like the way you explain the how's and what's. I am 27 (female) and my first language is german (i am from austria), english is my second language and I need to say you explain things so well that I understand everything. (While I do have some issues understanding stuff when it is explained in german... depending on what words people use) I like classical music, and just figured out like a year ago that the thing that makes me love that music genre is the "flute". I love the sound it makes. It is different to what I am used to hear from playing the recorder. I did play the clarinette as a teen for a year (or less I took lessons with a teacher) but I had no passion playing that instrument so I stopped. It is a bit overwhelming to start playing this "new" flute... that I never played before, it is so hard to get a tone... but your videos make it easier and well this is my first time trying it and day one of practicing it.... so I am looking forward to watching more of your videos! You are amazing!

When I practice something that needs a lot of attention I usually record myself to hear and see my mistakes. This helped me especially when I was practicing for a recital, not only did it make me nervous because I was recording myself but it was very good at helping me identify problem areas that I would use to focus on while practicing by measures and phrases.

try practicing long notes and scales in the dark so you can focus on tone. When The Syrinx was first played, it was apparently played in candlelight so the listener could focus on the beauty of every note and the dynamics, that's where this idea comes from.

Dang Jo! I wish I was as quick as you are... Look at you rinse that chicken!!! I LOVE the new expressions I get from you. WTFrederic Chopin!!! Wow!!! I thought it was just me... I never majored in music, but I know exactly what you mean about how even today, you still feel those same feelings a newby would!!! And excellent job articulating/communicating that although something may sound awesome when a... I don't consider myself professional, because I didn't major in music to be called a professional. However, I will say that I am a veteran!!! ...As a veteran musician, I feel the exact things that you are talking about how your mouth and body are feeling compared to what is coming out of the instrument! It may sound straight forward, but what you're feeling in comparison is you're all over the place! All the time Jo!!! Kind of like music... You leave a piece alone for too long, you have to refresh your memory for a few moments, before you remember, oh yeah... That's the tempo.. Or that's the beat, like that one time you mentioned playing a Baroque piece as a romantic piece. Cooking is the same way, I have to go back to a recipe every time I make my Mexican rice after making Thai Pepper Steak. Even Ginger Chicken... I can never remember all the ingredients. Thank you so much for doing another multi task video!!! I love these so much!!! Seriously, You're making me hungry... again, I already had spaghetti for dinner, but your chicken looks so awesome... Mmmmm... And as you already know for me, I LOVE when you do informal vlogs!!! I don't know if it's my computer's microphone, but I tried to play a song the other day, and I chose not to post it, because it gets very pitchy!!! Ooohh!!! I'm Pitchy today... There's a musical way to cuss!!! Any who... I will also have to try it from my phone to my computer, or my Kodak C875, to my computer... If not, I'll have to figure out a way to muffle the camera, until I can afford one of them there nice ones you got!!!

Fingerings are always just a problem by itself. I play flute , oboe, and clarinet and for some reason the keys feel the same. For my honor band rehearsal, which is next week, I feel like a total failure when the clarinets have the melody on The Lord of the Rings, excerpts from symphony 1. Since its repeated over and over, I just kind of let lose, and then it was fine. Watching JAF on Saturdays just turns my life into a happier one. Thank you for existing on KZbin.

Oh, my pleasure!! Yeah, it's funny how if you overthink fingerings, your fingers get tied up. Happens to me too!
@Krisstofers
@Krisstofers 6 жыл бұрын
Mathew Lor I agree! Jo makes it all better!!! I get exactly what you mean about the fingerings. I also play flute, clarinet and tenor sax. And the second octave on clarinet becomes the same fingerings as the flute and sax. I was reading somewhere that there's a reason for the same or near the same fingerings, is made for the ease of switching between instruments for music nerds like us, that like to play multiple instruments!

Thanks for another informative video. Two questions. Can you recommend a basic music theory book? Also, I just recently ran into my first B double flat. I had never heard of such a thing. What is a B double flat and how do you play it?
@JustAnotherFlutist
@JustAnotherFlutist 6 жыл бұрын
+pmh1nic A B double flat is actually an A! If you look at a keyboard, one note just below B is B-flat. Since it's a double flat, we go one more note down, and we land on an A! Be sure to look at a keyboard to understand this 😉

I'm not necessarily self-taught because I have a teacher, but she doesn't play flute and has eighty other students in the school. But... just play a bunch of music you might not even play. Especially with different time signatures or notes that you're not used to playing. Just for fun. When you eventually do play those songs with notes and time signatures that you aren't used to otherwise, it'll help. Does that make sense?

I'm originally a pianist and music producer, who's learning the flute for fun. One of the most confusing things at the start was how G seems to be "above" G# in terms of finger positions, because I'm using to piano fingerings and expecting everything to be perfectly linear. The fact that I have to use a "lower" finger position for a higher note, took quite a while to get used to.

Love this video too- love chicken wings / I've just started the flute on February 5th 2019 but as far as where to make the videos I knows your comment on that I make most of my videos in my bedroom sitting in front of a big tall mirror when I'm playing my violin My Viola or sometimes my cello but the cello is so big but I have to go into the living room while I have more room because you literally need a big space the play a cello it's literally really really big instrument I've just start the flute though and your tapes in your videos tutorials are fantastic you're fantastic person teacher and congratulations to your boyfriend I guess husband-to-be John that's fantastic that's a shame because I think you're fantastic but anyway keep it up keep up the good work and when blowing into the mouthpiece please make a video tutorial just on that section so we can get our amateur and where we Blow The Wind into the outer part of the mouse mouth because you don't lots of tapes don't show close-ups of that I've been watching all your videos I did catch it one night I actually found the sweet spot and I've been finding more when I watch you were teaching your mother that I called you there I could see where she was blowing in you were shown a word for them but actually showing how to put it on the chin and then rolled onto the bottom third of your lip and push your lip over top of the whole little bit like 1/3 it would be very very helpful if you get close up on it just do a whole video on that okay where the blow the air into the Hulk make sure they do it on the other side of you wear your back is facing your mouth is touching not where I can see your face but what I can see between your lips and the mouthpiece do lots of close-ups From The Bottom the top besides especially decides thank you thank you thank you Robert you're fantastic

Hi!!! I would like to suggest that you gave some tips or at least talked some more about fifes. They are extremely popular not only among kids (due to affordability, avaiability, sturdiness, easier mainteinance,...) but also among adult advanced musicians looking for a fun way to take breaks from their main instruments (which is my case). I believe that, since pvc and plastic fifes are so oftenly used in music classes (at least in European schools), adults who want to start playing again will be the ones who would benefit the most if you did end up sharing a bit of your knowledge on this topic. Oh, and I love asian jokes and your facial expressions; they make your videos so much funnier!

Joanna, Thank you very much for the tips. I am sure it is very useful for both self taught and non-self taught people. Those of us who has teacher do go self exploration. Just a question: for someone who self-taught and is working on a piece of music, what is the good indication that you should move on to next piece of music? Say, you are at the stage that you can get through the piece, but there is always something get wrong (usually occurs at different place at different time). Say there are things you can't do so well but can't quite get better, but unfortunately you don't have a teacher to ask. Is it bad to just (seems to be) put up the white flag and "give up" on a piece?
@JustAnotherFlutist
@JustAnotherFlutist 6 жыл бұрын
Well, the way I see it is, you never have to "give up" on a piece. You can put a "will work on again later" date on it. Maybe give yourself half a year away from it, and see what happens when you come back to it later. :)

@JustAnotherFlutist

That was the argument for a LOOOOOOOOONG time. Somehow, the closed G# key became the norm, and now most people have never heard of the open G# key! And man, these wings were AMAZING. Still got a lot left over to chow down on over the weekend with my boyfriend ^_^
@cesaosales
@cesaosales 6 жыл бұрын
I guess the modern flute originally was made with the open g#, but some makers made with the closed g# to make it easier for the musicians who played with classical flutes... also I think it's interesting to play the notes above g# with this key opened and hear if there is a diference... also I like to put wings in the oven with a homemade barbecue sauce with brown sugar that will melt and caramelize the wings with a sticky sweet flavor.thanks for the video joana, I was going take a nap but watching you changed my mind and now I will have a strong coffee and practice.

Oh boy, happy practicing!! And omg, that sounds like an AMAZING recipe, will have to try sometime!! I hear you actually have the change the fingering of a lot of notes to include holding down the G# key if you play with the open G# key. That's from hearsay though, I haven't had the pleasure of trying one myself!!

Rhythm is still an issue for me even after almost 14 years. Also, I agree with the 4th point because it’s so important to be able to hear them on the piano. My tone got better after I got my Altus almost two years ago. Trevor Wye has a lot of good things to say in regards to tone. I love chicken wings!😃❤️🎼🎶

Do you have any tips for playing again after being two weeks ill? I feel pretty demotivated, because my tone is so bad and I have no idea how to get it like it was before.
@JustAnotherFlutist
@JustAnotherFlutist 6 жыл бұрын
This is my suggestion, using the TW books!For tone: Harmonics! Whistle Tones for breath control are also fun! www.flutecolors.com/techniques/whistle-tones/ For technique: Machiavellian Exercises (in the technique book) Do lots of exercises, rather than practicing your repertoire, for a few days after being ill. Let your body slowly readjust back. Think of it like getting back on a workout routine after the holidays. Your muscles are bound to be sore for a bit, but after you get into the groove again, you won't be sore anymore! :) I hope that helps!

Rests are silent notes - negative space - have you ever listened to John Cage’s 4’33”? ;) How would I encourage and enforce counting the rests? Practice with a metronome! Practice with an accompanist! Use a program like smartmusic! (Have you ever heard of/used smartmusic? I would love to get your thoughts/opinion/review of it! If anyone has any idea about youth orchestras or experiences, I would be very thankful. I am just about to do grade 8 and am going to apply for a youth orchestra in the uk, and was wondering what auditions are like, what to expect if I get in, any tips? I also am starting the piccolo, so will that help? And does piccolo playing help with flute playing as well? Thank you!!
@JustAnotherFlutist
@JustAnotherFlutist 6 жыл бұрын
Ah, our UK peeps will probably need to chime in to give you an accurate description of what it'd be like for your auditions. In the US, you typically are asked to play one fast (technical) piece/movement and one slow (lyrical) piece/movement. Then you're asked to play some random scales (have to know all major and minor), maybe an assigned excerpt or two, and then you're given a short excerpt to sight read. Usually piccolo playing does help with flute playing, and you tend to get asked to switch instruments (piccolo/flute) often. If you like that, then it'll be good for you! :D All the best!

JustAnotherFlutist Okay!! Thank you very much, I was almost scared piccolo playing would alter my flute embouchure, perhaps for the worst- but I guess thats not the case!! Its very different, and difficult but I’m getting better, still cant play the upper notes... Sounds more difficult in words for auditions in the US. Apparently in the UK, Its just a piece, sight reading, orchestra excerpts and interview. But it varies between orchestras... Thank you!!
@KiwiFlute
@KiwiFlute 6 жыл бұрын
I used to be in a county youth orchestra. I suppose the standard varies depending on the orchestra, but for mine the audition process was pretty relaxed and they accepted a lot of flutes (may not be the case for all). For the audition, I just had to play a grade piece, a couple of scales that I was allowed to pick and then do some sightreading. I started picc recently and I feel like it does help for the higher ranges of flute and it's good for developing better air support, but idk. Good luck for your audition!

Question 1: How is it possible to be a self-taught flutist in the US? Cause in Vienna that's literally impossible. You can buy a guitar or ukulele without knowing anything but flutes are a no-no. Because you usually buy your first instruments together with your teacher. And because as a beginner you don't know what to look for and what brand suits you etc. How is that handled in the States? Question 2: How can I learn rhythm? Despite having been a (choral) singer for 3,5 years I've got no clue about rhythm. I just have no feeling for it. Everyone else in choir got it pretty much instantly, but I was always lost, when we had to clap or snap the rhythm to a song. Still am. And it drives me crazy because I'm the only one who didn't get it. Thus bars of rest are my greatest nemesis. And I really like this casual video style. It's like two in one, we get something about music and we learn a recipe.

Flower Dolphin I can answer your first question. I'm from the uk however. For me, I found myself interested in the flute and watching tutorials even though I didn't own one. I then went to a music shop hired a flute, bought a few books and started learning at home by myself.

OmariLiveHD that's how I felt, too. But all of my music stores told me I need to get a teacher first.
@JustAnotherFlutist

Answer 1: There are many places in the US where it's actually impossible to find a flute teacher! Most flutists end up being in large cities, but the more rural or suburban areas may not have flute teachers (or very few). So that's why many people have turned to KZbin and the internet. I'm attempting to reach out to those people so they don't feel so lost! :) Answer 2: Hm, I would actually try listening to some random music and just bobbing along with the music. Do you ever tap your feet or dance along? Usually, you'll be tapping or dancing to the beat. You may need to kind of mess around like this first before you start thinking too hard about exactly where the beats are. Jazz tends to give you the strongest sense of the beat because of their awesome drummers. Start there, and then later, you can try figuring out the music you're working on with your choir. You'll slowly start to not only find the beat, but also find where the strong beats are. Those are usually the beginning of a bar or the exact middle of a bar.r :) Keep in mind that not all the notes _should_ line up exactly with the beat. If you've got some parts that are off the beat, don't think of it as sounding wrong. Think of it as something COOL about the music. That's how I got into 3-against-2 rhythms (triplet rhythm superimposed on duple rhythm). :) I hope that helps!! And yay! Glad you enjoyed the format, I'll do more of these!
@flowerdolphin8920
@flowerdolphin8920 6 жыл бұрын
JustAnotherFlutist thanks for the tips! But man, jazz music is one of the few types of music I don't like to listen to 🙈 but I'll give it a shot! And I have no idea what 3 against 2 rhythms are. Maybe the ones where you count like 1-2 1-2-3 1-2 1-2-3? Just a wild guess.
@JustAnotherFlutist
@JustAnotherFlutist 6 жыл бұрын
Nope, I mean _literally_ superimposed. You can count 1-2 and 1-2-3 AT THE SAME TIME! :O But don't worry about that for now XD Just get in the groove! If you don't like jazz, then Baroque will do very well! It's sort of "super old jazz" if you will. :P The beat is super strong too! I'm immediately thinking of the Vivaldi Four Seasons. ;)

Love your video s can you please go over to the Arbiter as far as blowing the air into the mouthpiece in the head joint to a very very close up of where the role the mouthpiece into the underneath the chin in the bottom lip where touches just the bottom of her because a lot of times on a lot of videos your videos of the best by the way I'm finding that I cannot see where two people are putting their mouths where to blow the are exactly what you need to do very very extreme close-ups of that so we can see that matter fact just do a whole video and just doing close-ups of where to put your mouth that your videos of fantastic I love you and your mom you're very good I play the violin the viola and a little bit of cello I'm trying to be self-taught on the flute I'll look to take lessons from you but I'm in Southern New Jersey and I have no idea where you live or if you give lessons to adults thank you Robert New Jersey your videos the best on the flute fantastic
