The Final Transmission I Ever Warranty! Discover Why I Made This Decision

If you follow along with my stories I tell you, I do believe you will feel the frustration I have been feeling over the years of these situations. I run a salvage yard selling used transmissions that are usually sold knowing they're good, But the same story nearly every time leads to this situation. This is just the one that broke me and made me put my foot down for my own stress level to be better. Hope you see my side and feel why I get so sore on this subject. Thanks if you watch and I do teach along the way. -Dex

Exactly, too many people think a warranty should cover their fruckups. Nope been there , never again. You want a warranty, then we'll fit it or a mechanic we know and trust. Otherwise, it's as is

@@nipponsuxs This is something I think would be common sense to everyone in this industry. If an unknown technician/mechanic installs it. Or more likely your uncle Jim Bob. You can't verify anything. You can't verify if they flushed out the transcooler, if they seated the torque converter correctly, if they reprogrammed the PCM and TCM with the solenoid strategy. (common on modern transmissions) and a bunch of other potential issues. I am a 4th generation mechanic. My Great Grandfather taught my Grandfather. My Grandfather taught my Father. And my Dad taught me. And I have thousands of hours of training. I personally feel that being a great technician is almost an art. My Grandfather was and my Father still is amazing with diagnosing and repairing vehicle's. Anyone can loosen and tighten fasteners but it's the experience and knowledge of how a car truly works that makes a great technician.

The owner of a shop I worked at had the transmission go out in his dodge truck. He had the alignment, oil change kid help him take it out. They took it to a transmission shop to be rebuilt. They put it back in and it didn't act right. A few days later it stopped moving and was towed back to the shop. They ended up sending the whole truck to the transmission shop. I guess they left some spacer or something out on the converter and destroyed the fresh transmission. I've never had one apart so I'm not sure if it was on the transmission or flywheel side. I'm not sure if they charged to build it again or just charged for the extra labor pulling it and putting it back in. Either way, the boss (a small business owner himself) was mad at the transmission shop when he was the one that messed the job up.

Calif here...in my youth, I've done maybe 25 transmissions; all inline as sideways had barely come out. I've done only C-4, C-6, 727, 350 and 400's. Only on one were the clutches down to the metals and warped blue. The parts for that one came out of a core. On the rest, I've seen the original inked part numbers on the frictions...no wear at all. Most have had hard seals and lucky that the owners knew enough to stop driving the car and making things worse. I loved those 727's. Throw the parts in a box...shake it a bit and an assembled transmission pops right out.

I have a 95 zj, so 42RE transmission. I didn't realize when we got the Jeep, someone cut the transmission cooler lines and connected them together next to the radiator. So the only cooler this transmission had was the cooler lines. Drove that way at least a year, some drives over an hour long. Never seen issue. I put it back to stock cooling as soon as i saw the line. I didn't take chances, i put a new radiator because i had to wonder why they bypassed the transmission cooler in the transmission. Only issue this thing has is not wanting to downshift to first at a stop, and very first start of the day, when cold, it doesn't like going to second gear. I don't blame it, it's only a winter issue, and very cold when it happens. Maybe time to do a fluid change on it.

I love it when I rebuild a trans and tell the people bring it back in 500 miles so I can service it. Then 6 months and 10k miles later they come back and say it isn't shifting right. I'm like, haven't seen you, haven't seen it to make sure you installed it right, and now you want me to warranty it? I started telling people the warranty ends when your outta sight of my shop. Drives me nuts people bringing me parts off Amazon to have installed, then they bring it back and tell me it's not working right. I'm like, well, I didn't sell you the part so it's on you.

I recall only rebuilding just 1 of those units and they did not flush cooler lines and I recommend replacing radiator and check valve which they did not do! It did not last very long and they came back and told me about it. Usually people would try to blame me for failures and I would tell them to bring it back and that would not happen. After hearing from people I would just tell them that if they want an overhaul that I would only do it if I removed it and installed it.

Have only rebuilt 3 47's and the only one that had an issue was the one that wasn't installed by me, they also didn't give me the valve body when I rebuilt it nor did they want a new converter. I didn't warranty that transmission. He came complaining a week later saying I didn't build it right for him. I made him help me take it out... And we found out a lot. And then he paid me for a whole new rebuild and I installed it. The guy learned a lot from his own mess.

I had my aw4 rebuilt and got a new torque converter. The shop warranty stipulated that I flushed lines and cooler. I ran new lines and a heavy duty cooler in line with the rad cooler. I used a transfer pump to push the junk out of the rad cooler. I had to bring it to their shop because it was slipping. They said it was a failed seal causing a pressure drop. They pulled it fixed it and reinstalled it on their dime which I was super appreciative of.

Everybody needs to work (sell) to the general public then they’d understand , I’ve owned my own shop for 40 yrs and owned auto parts store also , transmission and a/c compressors are a pain , you HAVE to flush the system first or you’re wasting your time , if your old one is burnt up or trashed where does all the trash end up ? In the lines , cooler and the torque converter a/cs is in the lines filter and evaporator core and condenser coil , so you have to clean those out or the replacement parts you put in will be trashed also !!!! Place I use to buy used trannys from wouldn’t sell you one without you bought a filter kit and a can of cooler and line flush and most part stores won’t warranty an a/c compressor unless you replace filter drier , orafice tube and flush for system ! It’s hard to educate customers on some of these things but if you put labor and warranty cost back on them ( instead of yourself ) they’ll educate themselves really quick !!!!

I just saw a short where a guy made the statement that a transmission (rebuild) is like taking a 100 question test and you fail if you get one question wrong. I completely understand what you are saying. I had a Buick TH400 rebuilt for my Jeep J2000 a few years ago and I was scared out of my mind installing the converter. Everything turned out OK though. As hard to find as those transmissions are, I really didn't want to screw up. Being broke and needing to get stuff done can come with an unexpected price tag.

Could do transmission storys for days. One I warranted was a low mileage Avalanche w/a 4L65 . Original complaint was slow reverse engagement cold. Did F&F w/line flush and found the filter had disintegrated. ( Aftermarket filter, both customer and dealer claim OEM only, so where did it come from?) A few days later, towed in, cooler line blown off radiator. Did I screw up? Pulled trans and had local shop rebuild, he showed me the valve body , pluged with filter material. Likely overpressure cause of the line separating.

The only used trans warranty I've ever seen. Is at like pull-a-part or LKQ and its like 2wks or 30days, where they'll let ya take it back and you can pull another one. You pay a few dollars more for the warranty at the time of purchase. Plus too many people think they don't need the kick down cables hooked up correctly and that'll cook the trans. Or they have a bad converter thinking it's the trans and the new trans ends up having the same symptoms

#1 Cause of "Worked fine then stopped" is due to improper installation. They blow the pump or Torque Converter by 1. Not ensuring the torque converter is seated properly prior to installation (or it slips off due to handling during installation) 2. Forcing the transmission in/tightening the bolts. #3 is reusing the transmission fluid and not flushing the cooler. I don't blame you at all. Never had an AW4 fail and I deliberately abuse mine. We have a 2005 jeep grand Cherokee it has the i think 5.7 and is all-time 4X4. Well it started acting funny and Overdrive would just turn itself off and say high temp despite it wasn't overheating at all. So over months finally one day we was pulling the mountain "paved road highway" but its a good hill. It just bucked. Like what i imagine it would feel like on a horse. It kinda felt like the front tires locked for a split second. Regardless got it home and transmission was shot. We knew a guy selling a good jeep but needed a motor so we bought it and swapped the transmission. Well now it slips sometimes. You put it in drive and itll kinda jerk but then goes on. You can fly down the highway just fine but its just when you first get it in gear and sometimes you gotta roll to get it in reverse. It doesn't make sense tho that it worked fine and then you put it in ours and bam it has issue. We dont care we still drive it and will drive it until it blows up but its definitely made me scared of transmissions. I don't think i will ever go through that headache again. **the reason i don't know the specifics is because its my moms jeep. I loved that jeep and its a beast in the snow but sadly once the transmission started acting up it just ruined my faith in them

I’ve never replaced a transmission before but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Never warranty a customer installed transmission. If they are too cheap to pay a professional they accept all risk.

A sonnax regulator is the best way to go regulated lube helps with many issues on any of these chrysler 500 600 series. Cool flush is almost impossible, either bypass or replace radiator. Oh yeah and manual valve too.

I used to rebuild heavy-duty industrial transmissions, but every one of them was put on a test stand, and certification papers were given to the customer. No ifs or buts about warranty.

My wife's car was a 2017 jeep patriot it had 20k miles. The vehicle would get stuck in park and we couldn't put it in reverse or drive. The dealership could never troubleshoot it cuz the check engine light was never on. It was a sealed trans with no dip stick so you could never check the fluid level. After multiple trips to the dealership I traded it in and bought a chevy. Terrible experience

My guy would not warranty the unit unless he pulled and installed. His reason is to check the vehicle, and also have money to fix any issues that there may be with the unit. This is also is policy with rebuild units.

Buy a paint pen, i usually use yellow. Its in a squeeze bottle with a ball on the end. Bit like a large ball point pen. Mark all your gear, transmissions, diffs, brakes, shocks, windows, mirrors, tailshafts, etc. Everything that doesn't have a serial number. Who works for $15 an hour. My daughters 19 and she get $23 an hour, i charge $160 an hour so whoever is being paid $15 an hour for mechanical work is being seriously ripped off.

Dex, on the 04 WJ 4x4... the overdrive is starting to kick and buck in and out of gear... or so it seems. Would there be a sensor or whatnot that controls that? I'm stumped and lack any serious knowledge. 🤷‍♂

Need to drop something just heavy enough on that transmission table to where is makes a slight bowl... just enough for the oil to pool in the center... rather than on your crotch. Drill a hole in the center of the puddle, put a oil pan underneath.... mabye build it to where you can slide the oil pan directly under the top of the table to where you can still store stuff below the table

GMs from the 2000s and up are also pretty bad about clogging coolers and killing trans. A $15 can or two of Kooler Kleen is worth every penny and if it won't go thru the cooler you know you gotta get a new cooler. I don't know Jeeps but your prices seem very reasonable. That said i wouldn't warranty anything unless you install it yourself. And that around me is about 1000 for labor only just to swap trans at most shops.

Most shops don’t let techs actually diagnose trans issues of engine issues. It’s more cost effective and less risk to replace with a known good then have some inexperienced tech dive into something the shop will be married to
