two weeks ago I obtained a 1999 red subaru forester L with manual transmission, it looks exactly like yours. I paid the same price you did. This one sat since at least 2017 when I first moved here. Picked it up, changed the battery, new tires, changed the fluids, master brake cylinder, water pump, timing belt, major cleaning and some wax. Like new. I will be enjoying monitoring your recovery plan to see how your car turns out in the end as well. As for the alarm, I had an "issue" too until I read the yellow sticker on the front by the battery. But I see your car has an aftermarket alarm installed. By the way, while at the car parts place a guy walked up and offered $5k for it without any questions. Might give you some idea of the local value in Oregon as I'm in Washington.

A few years ago i also managed to score a 1999 subaru forester but its a white one, it was parked in the backyard of my nannys house back in 2014 and sat there ever since, i like to explore it alot and watching this makes me feel like its possible to make it run

and dont cheap out on any of those parts. that is what keeps the repair recurrent. gates is a no-go in my opinion. REPLACE ALL at once! dont forget the tensioner or an idler and have a deeper hole down the line... the plastic endcapped radiators arent worth any time or effort, replace that rad with an aluminum asap. while ur in there get ur thermostat n rad cap at the same time. adjust ur valve lash once ur near completion on the head gasket replace ur pcv and clean out ur intake system of any oil/ contaminants... if u get ur block halves decked / flattened by a shop might as well get a cylinder bore in as well, and new rings. i could go on. but subaru is hands-down the biggest nickle and dime breakdown manufacturer ive ever owned, and the parts come at a premium unless you are trying to practice wrenching by taking your car off the road over and over again. letting my current subie get driven into the ground then im converting to some other jap brand...

@@imakedookie Scotty kilmer changed his mind on them and i did too. It is very depending on scenario a used 3k subaru that gets you around for half a decade isn't bad at all like the one i got here with a nice awd system in new england(A 2010 impreza i got in 2020 no leaking head gasket and timing was already done when i got it). The newer cars do not have the gasket problem it is not so much that there are two its the quality of the material used. They are also easier to work on than people make it out to be. As long as your not doing head gasket or timing it's easy. I would take a subaru and most japanese vehicles before anything european or most american cars like stelantis or gm.
