About the speaker:
Michael Root is Ordinary Professor of Systematic Theology at The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. Root is a native of Norfolk, Virginia and studied at Dartmouth College (B.A.) and Yale University (Ph.D. in theology). He was received into the Catholic Church in August, 2010. His particular theological interests are ecumenical relations, eschatology/last things, and grace and justification. Root has been a member of the US and international LutheranCatholic dialogues, the US LutheranUnited Methodist dialogue, the AnglicanLutheran International Working Group, and the AnglicanLutheran International Commission. He served on the drafting teams that produced the Lutheran-Roman Catholic Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification.

In my understanding, even though we can't bring salvific good deeds to actuality without efficacious grace, we can at least desire to will the good only with universal sufficient grace and this desire for willing the good communicates to God when to bestow extraordinary efficacious grace to bring about a salvific deed. It is true that God doesnt owe us anything but yet he is a savior and in his antecedent will he offered his son in sacrifice for the salvation of every human person, I dont think God's consequent will is so distant from his antecedent will, he is only "waiting" (big quotes for waiting) for our desire to will the good. So from his eternal "present", God predestines his elect not based on merits but on their desire to will the good, and any person that at least honestly desire to will the good will also receive efficacious grace and be predestined in the eternal "present" of God.
