This… “Hollywood”? Oh, okay. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your car and you drive to the park, for instance, because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you see at the movies or on TV. But what you don't know is that that drive to the park is not just a drive to the park. It's not "touching grass". It's not "freedom". It's actually something you learned to do in movies and TV.

Bateman's comment about Hollywood hurting itself by focusing on the bottom line misses the elephant standing in the corner of the room: Most executives & employees in the entertainment industry are socially, politically too "lefty." This conversation was absolutely fascinating to me because everything you said about what has happened to film making in Hollywood - essentially it being run by executives in their 20s-40s who know next to if not actually nothing about the industry they are in - applies to the two different industries I have worked and still work in. That kind of managerialism choking the life out of everything is a culture wide problem and applies to everything from infrastructure to hospital management.

If you go up to bat every time trying to hit home runs you're going to strike out A LOT. And if you have a whole batting line up made up of players who only know how to swing for the fences your team is going to lose a lot of games. So the Hollywood strategy of only making huge budget blockbusters can't work.
@bcluett169729 күн бұрын
After Godzilla Minus One was shot so cheap with an interesting story I have to wonder if the revamp is in the works and we'll soon see studios chancing low budget films. You can see that with that you could use streaming as a backup plan but if it turns out a surprise hit then invest for the big screen release. They got to stop with the focus groups though. That's just useless. They really need someone who can read what's a hit and then chase the directors and his team that does good work to enhance their chances.

Of course there will be the occasional hit movie here and there like Deadpool, Barbie or wicked. But a movie that makes a billion dollars today is not like a billion dollars years ago. Some of these movies are breaking even at 1 billion it’s crazy. The cost and marketing of these movies are insane. The occasional hit movie is not going to take Hollywood off life support. A former boss of mine got to the heart of the problem when he stated, if he could automate the entire work force without dealing with workers, he'd do so. That's the future of tech companies with the FAANG companies leading the pack for investment and vision. Essentially, many creatives today are driving the Uber while waiting for more, and eventually full, automation. Makes me miss the insane push, with producers hovering over desks to have everything done, on tape, and sent out by Friday at 5PM for FedEX pickup so that network execs could review the work on Monday. Even the mid streaming years when investment flowed into certain projects and there was still theatrical and network options has some nostalgia, but that time too has passed.

Also the AI hallucinations have to be solved to 95 to 100 % reliability, since human error can be held directly accountable where AI...not as much.
@jeremy__hopkins29 күн бұрын
@@Ghost_Text Yes, we're not there yet with AI. Not even close. Humans will still play a huge part with top level creative decisions and with lower level technical retakes for the foreseeable future. However AI improvements over the past few years have been significant. Those with bottom line thinking aren't planning long term creative legacy and are seemingly focused on quarterlies for large investors. Or that's what feels like when working for these companies. That aspect is already part of production and we'll most likely continue to see smaller teams with more pressure put on the creative staff to do more aspects of production. Yes, Nvidia has had huge growth recently but they're technically not part of the FAANG list. They are playing fast and loose with AI PR, probably for investment, but they also have a viable business with their highest end GPUs used for gaming, scientific and rendering/video editing.

18:45 - Just to add to this comment. I've rarely found the network notes or executive notes that filtered down to me to be informed. Though that's 22 years ago versus 30-40 years ago in animation. That 10 year gap makes a difference. They generally seemed clueless about the art. This is more important with Canadian productions because sources of funding come from multiple partners which means multiple, and sometimes conflicting, network notes. The difference is, in the past, a director would stand up for his staff and push back against what didn't make sense for budget and schedule. The crowd shot of single socks that morphed in a giant Sock Monkey character with patches was killed at the script stage thanks to an informed director who knew it wasn't possible with the pipleline and TV budget. Anymore there's no patience for pushback even with the nonsense notes. Just do it and do it on time, regardless how unreasonable the expectation and a director who can't do that is removed. That adds to point Script and Chris were making about the disposable nature of talent and everything being data driven. Also, amazing to me the level of autistic Rainman level of number counting for certain things but Hollywood can't even release all HD Blu Ray movies with HDR10+ or Dolby Vision.

The Oscars were dead decades ago. Award ceremonies have nothing to do with 'celebrating or admiring the arts.' If it did they would get rid of all categories and show like clips from several hundred films made in any given year as a celebration of what is out there. Instead, they get all the people with money who can push marketing campaigns "for your consideration" and I will wager 90% of the Academy voters don't watch 90% of the movies they're sent. They just recognize a name and say "Oh I like him" or "oh, she's always great."

A-24 is the future model that will survive all of this. This, "These are your movies" in a populist medium will never work. Even in the former USSR it was all about selling tickets. You don't sell tickets, the money invested is not recouped, and there are going to be fewer movies, even in that system. It was one thing when Stalin was still alive, it was truly all mandated content, backed by ubiquitous force (here, it's just money), but after his death you see cinema explode in the former Warsaw Pact. Movies are a popular medium, period, or they cannot exist for long.

Hollywood is a vampire. It isn’t dead. It has an ability to survive. The Hollywood studios are a goldmine in the age of AI. We are entering the age of $micro-transactions$ and of course ad dollars will always be with us. Consumers either pay for content directly or with their time and eyeballs and ears. Hollywood studios are story banks and with AI and access still to more dollars than indie producers will be able to create content and get it in front of consumers. They have used tools to replicate reality and suspend disbelief for 150 years. Once they figure out AI more fully they’ll put it to use or watch others do it. Animation and video games have proven this out. Right now you can contract any SAG talent’s voice with their recently signed AI voice use agreement. Can a talent’s image be far behind. The talent will collect fees without ever getting out of their pajamas. Smaller human stories can be told but can they find enough traction and $ to payback and reward investors?
