I had a friend (or so I thought she was) who I bumped into one day and the first thing she said said when she saw me was “oh what happened?why do you have those frown lines?” Normally I would smile and let it go, but because I was so taken aback that those were her first words (not even a hello-good-to-see-you greeting) it took me a minute to muster the strength to tell her in her face “is that all you have to say after not seeing each other for years? You don’t have any kind words?” She quickly said goodbye and blabbed to our common friends that I wasn’t nice to her. I knew then that it wasn’t me. She had serious issues.

@@PhebeYoussef Some people just say whatever pops into their heads. My mother came to visit, I had gotten a very small pimple on my forehead and I knew it would be a problem. She couldn't look at me without staring at it. Finally she just interrupted me to ask me why I had THAT. She accused me of not showering, I told he I did. She said, "are you using soap"? She was serious. This went on for some time and she said, "well if you actually are showering everyday like you claim, you obviously are scrubbing very hard because clean people don't get those things." She was staying for a week and it went downhill from there. Like your "friend" she also tells everyone that I'm not nice to her and don't make her feel welcome. She literally has me on edge when I see her because she finds fault in everything.

She has what I call "total beauty". It's her personality, mannerisms, confident femininity, knowledge, wisdom, and more. She looks like she lives a healthy lifestyle. I don't see any flaws.

Justine has a very interesting perspective which is also healthy. I must confess as a 60 year old woman I feel somewhat invisible. There was a time in my life where I really got by on my looks and I knew people noticed me because of it, not that that’s a good thing it’s just the truth. I stand in the mirror pull my neck back, pull my face back and ask the questions what if I did this or maybe I should do this regarding changing my looks with Plastic surgery. I’m so glad I came across this interview because it really makes me view aging in a whole different way

I found myself terrified of aging by the time I was sixteen, and held onto those fears for twenty years. She’s absolutely right that I could change my face, but the fears would still have a tight grip on me. Her perspective is one I needed to hear so badly, and there are many many people suffering with these fears that need to hear her ideas also. We’re always bombarded by perfection. And these standards we’re being expected to uphold, but I remember reading that even Marilyn Monroe said she wasn’t afraid of aging. That she wanted to see the life she lived written on her face. It’s been decades since someone else has looked at aging as a positive in a public way.

I remember she had a short spikey haircut in the 90's when I met her at my elementary school.. she helped me with my work bc she saw me looking sad outside by myself when she was walking by and asked me what happened. So what? He looks older but did not do anything to cause it. Just his genes. But Justine is 55 years old. She looks 55 and might I add, she looks great at 55. She is not 25 years old and can’t be expected to look 25 at 55. We were all different people at 15, and at 25 and at 35, etc. She is 7 years from qualifying for social security so as far as I am concerned, she looks damn good!

@Jim Miller I don't care if she's wrinkled. I care that she is pretending that this is normal aging. She is pretending that looking 80 years old in your 50s is normal. She is totally leaving out the lifestyle choices she made that led to this accelerated aging. This will cause MORE harm to young women because they will be terrified that they will look like her at 50. They will now get MORE filers, botox, face-lift, etc so that they don't look like her when they're 50. In reality, t hey wont UNLESS they smoke a pack or two of cigarettes a day, have an eating disorder, sun worship, not wear sunscreen etc. She needs to be truthful and stop saying this is normal aging. As she states, she likes her face, it reflects her life and who she is, instead of being "terrified" and obsessed with what to do to not look "old". I love her message and what she's doing 100%, and I have total respect for her intelligence, accomplishments, independence, and that she branched out - way out - from acting, in service to her fellow humans. I'm getting older, but my wrinkles aren't that noticeable yet, so accepting my own aging process is still ahead of me in many ways, and I will seek her out for inspiration. All of that said, I think she would look prettier, and younger, without the thick black eyeliner, and with a more flattering hairstyle. Of course, we all have different taste, and clearly that's what she prefers right now. Her beauty still shines through.

Right on Justine! I’m 59 and have had a sad, dark life, I am now an ethical vegan and animal activist, yoga instructor, writer. I was treated like I had no value unless I was young and pretty and fertile and discarded when I wasn’t by men. But, when when I was young and “acceptable” by men, they manipulated me (except for my ex-husband Jeff, who loved me unconditionally who I never should have divorced 😞, now he’s dead💔) and used me for sex and money and dumped me Thank you, Justine, for leading the way for women to liberate themselves from these chains of self-hatred which are laid upon us from the day we are born by being told to be “nice” no matter what is being done to us, that we have to be skinny, pretty, young, and don’t be a “bitch” and definitely do not stand up for yourself or the animals or anything that is outside of societal norms and create waves I am inspired by you, Justine. 🙏💚🌞

Not everyone gets surgery or treatments due to feeling "pain" of aging. Just as we don't drive around one car all our lives without keeping it in great condition and replacing things as needed, the same, IF NOT MORE value should be respected for our faces and bodies when it comes from a place of women's choices and women's power. The problem with so much of this dialogue is that people think accepting a natural aging face equates to confidence and empowerment, while surgery or other beauty treatments must mean one loathes the self or is afraid. The missing part of the conversation is that many of us just enjoy the art and power of designing the self as we see fit.

@Anna Inna Totally agree. Women are fully capable of making personal choices about how they present themselves in the world. For me, this discussion has less to do with the freedom women have for their own physical, emotional, spiritual agency, as much as it has to do with a social movement to challenge ageism and the narrative about the subjectification of women across the lifespan. Young women (people) are discounted because they haven't lived long enough...older adults because they have lived too long and are irrelevant. These stories need a new story. Women in the US are so programmed to be like those around them, fit in to some prescribed mode of looking, behaving, and living whether they are happy with it or not. I agree with Justine that we need to face the fears inside ourselves. I think women have a deep fear of not being accepted which keeps them locked into to going along with whatever they are told to be like. Honestly, as a woman who shook off these societal bindings years ago, and ventured onto my own path even though I knew it was going to be somewhat lonely, I found so much freedom in it. There is nothing like the freedom you feel in being authentically who you are.

I'm very critical of my own looks. Never mind what I went thru as a child. It did form my thinking. But imat the age that I don't care. I tell people who comment...im 61 years old, how am I supposed to look? I wear makeup every day. I'm that insecure. But I can't do anything about the natural Progression of life besides makeup. I can't afford cosmetic surgery and I don't think I would do it. This is how my ancestors looked . why do I want to change that? Everyone ages sooner or later.

Justine is a talented and inspiring person. I love that she is having this open conversation about aging and radical self acceptance. Interesting that the conversation has to be had at all. Her brother, (who is also wonderful in my opinion) is only 3 yrs younger and is not asked these questions, or has to remark on this topic at all, but gets to be a "silver fox". The double standard is so evident to me within the dynamic of these extraordinary siblings.

True, but the double standard is a feature of human genetics and reproduction. The age of a woman has greater impact on her ability to reproduce successfully than the age of a man has on his. Historically, for hundreds of thousands of years, generally speaking, a woman's role was primarily to carry a baby to term and then support it emotionally and physically, while a man's role was primarily to support the baby by providing food and shelter and some limited emotional support. Since nature "dssigned" us primarily for one thing - to reproduce - we are genetically pre-disposed to value each other by our reproductive "value". As long as a man can provide material support (food, shelter, etc.), he can potentially still be seen as reproductively "valuable". This may seem unfair or sad, but it is just biology. In some species, the female eats the male immediately after fertilization. That's just biology too.

I saw her and Paulina on 60 Minutes Australia and they both inspired me. I’ve stopped watching “look younger” and plastic surgery videos on YT. I want to learn to be at peace with how I look at my age, 58, and as I get older, the Lord willing. It will be a challenge because our culture is youth-obsessed. Justine is right! I’m critical of my face and my mother was of hers.

She’s a natural beauty, no makeup and even her long beautiful hair is tied back in a simple ponytail. She’s not taken in by superficialities, what you see is what you get, unlike all those with a ton of makeup, Botox and every other procedure you can think of saying she’s showing her age. Stay honest to yourself and you will be happy, otherwise it will never be enough. Justine’s an intelligent woman who will not fall for what society thinks the ideal woman should look like.

@@brockreynolds870 I think the difference is that men are 'allowed' to age; women are not. If you look at Hollywood and powerful people, women are considered 'too old' at 40 (very few actresses get good roles after that) while men can be as old and wrinkled as Eastwood but still given staring roles and even young love interests. It's the double standard. Most men aren't interested in mature women; they want the young hot chickies. That's why women really feel the need to stay 'young.' You may hate getting older but society doesn't put the pressure on you as it does women.

I’ve always been “the pretty girl” whose gotten a lot based on that (boohoo poor me right?) well, that has actually had a severely negative effect on me concerning aging. I just turned 42 and am just starting to see it happen- I can’t afford any help- not even Botox- and I live in Hollywood CA. I pray- god I pray- that I can get to a place where she is.

I think it’s really wonderful that Justine embraces herself as she ages. I grew up in Southern California, and I find it’s time for me to leave the western beauty standards behind if I wanna grow as a person. She is absolutely right that is about being afraid of looking old and being older. It is more about them (me). I’m not as brave or secure and would love to look younger again. I once looked at the wife of a friend of my husband’s and I caught myself judging why this beautiful person was so extremely wrinkled. She is a smart, slender and sweet woman. But I was only focused on who old she looked. Her husband is tall dark and handsome with a lot of money. It was all about me judging and my own insecurities. They have a great life and love each other. I want to work on my inner beauty and see people for their inner beauty. I also have a neighbor who looks amazing at 63, she is fit and still works “the sexy” constantly gets fillers, Botox, acid peels, lasers, micro needling treatments etc. she’s already had a facelift and is getting one more soon. She is very pretentious and an unkind person. The only conversations with her are about hating people, designer bags, plastic surgeons, money and looks. Lather, rinse, repeat. No thanks!

It's so refreshing to see a public figure choosing not to conform her looks but truly emphasizes on healing the root cause of fear which essentially is why people have injection treatments and cosmetic surgery that believe that the exterior appearance is the utmost importance of success in love...career...etc. If more people could choose to work on their insecurities along with stop following the false narrative of the aging process there would be alot more happier people upon this planet. A lot of people think that’s great, but they they don’t know how often I’m talked down too and treated like a child. It’s maddening. Same here... approaching 45 this year and due to genetics and being slightly overweight look much younger and get mistaken or late 20s or 30s. Compliments from young people who are surprised about my age but the downside is a lack of respect and condescending attitude from people who don't realise that I'm the same age or just a couple of years younger than they are.

It's maddening because women get told that ageing will render them invisible, but the whole idea of 'pretty privelige' is somewhat of a myth as younger attractive women are often disregarded or talked down to as if they were less intelligent just because of their looks and the stereotypes that people attach to women who are feminine or attractive.
