Fashion is an art form, and sometimes you have to learn a bit about it in order to enjoy and appreciate it. I think Justine does a fantastic job at explaining the meaning to help us all appreciate high fashion. Many people are bored with classical music until they learn a bit about it…so it is with many things.

I came across some disgruntled articles about the theme for this year’s MET. Their concern was the comments Lagerfeld had made at various points in his life that were degrading to certain groups. I was hoping to get your take on those comments. However, grateful for your take on the fashion as always ❤️

For real, while I understand the Met Gala is meant to be fantasy and performance, the theme this year really left a bad taste in my mouth. Is Anna Wintour that out of touch? Yes, and she's happy to be that way. The tastemakers in fashion apparently don't want to grapple with anti-fat bias, n@zism, misogyny, racism etc, and they make themselves the lesser for it. I don't think Justine likes to get into these complex waters which I can't really blame her for, since she's more interested in the fashion history aspect.

Merci, Justine! As always, an engaging & insightful analysis informed by historical & contemporary contexts. Lagerfeld was at once a brilliant designer & a very complicated man, & I do wish he had kept his mouth shut more often. I love the black-&-whiteness of it all this time, & the camellias & pearls made it all the more fabulous. The Met Gala always gives me a sort of Zoolander vibe, & this year's theme really intensified that.
@justineleconte
@justineleconte Жыл бұрын
Lagerfeld has definitely polarised many times & some of his ideas were from another generation… to say the least. A part which I dislike is also how he made fashion elitist and made the designer into a superstar - many people feel that fashion isn’t for them because of that mindset.
@gorejs8396
@gorejs8396 Жыл бұрын
@@justineleconte Yes! In so doing, his public persona also fed into the stereotype of the narcissistic, über-snob fashion designer whose clothes were meant only for the elite, not for regular people who love fashion. He is among those who inspired Zoolander's Mugatu. I don't think Karl would ever have worn Mugatu's thick Shetland jumper topped with a bustier, though. Even with his flaws, Lagerfeld knew better!

The cats were my favorites. I noticed 3. Doja Cat, Jared Leto, and Lil Nas X... though I loved Jared's the most. The happy feels and nightmare fuel he created is unmatched... though absolute major props to Doja for going all out on the makeup and committing to character. She's wearing prosthetic makeup & only meowed all night. What a great way to make sure you don't accidentally say something you might regret. I'm a big fan of Choupette, even if I was never a big Lagerfeld fan & I think the nods to Choupette were a great way to be on theme without outright supporting a person you found to be problematic. You can't be mad at cats. I also was a big fan of those who picked up on the word LINE in the theme, Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty and really played up the lines in their outfits... be they lines of pearls, lines of pleats, lines of boning, lines within a gridded pattern... the list goes on of the ways I noticed repetitive, straight lines showing up in the outfits chosen for the gala. I thought it was another great way to stay on theme without supporting someone whose values don't align with your own.

Today, I heard a review of the following book: "Monsters: A Fan's Dilemma". Claire Dederer asks: Can we love the work of Hemingway, Polanski, Naipaul, Miles Davis, or Picasso? Should we love it? Does genius deserve special dispensation? The book is an expansion of her Paris Review essay "What Do We Do With the Art of Monstrous Men?" Maybe Karl is in the same category?

If we choose to ignore art made by awful man, we would be left with almost nothing unfortunately... We have no choice if we don't want to have a blank void as culture. So we need to accept to divide the artist from his art for those who are dead because we can't change that. We can just change what is in front of us, so now we should keep high standards from now on! But we can't ignore that some monsters created amazing art...

Karl perfected architectural silhouettes 👥 in his designs mixing elements of dark romance and Renaissance while keeping elements of the olde world such as tweed and pearls and embellishments! Karl would’ve been just as easily a gr8 architect, building skyscrapers 🏙️ had he chosen that path. Few people nailed that logical/ mathematical/ architectural aspect of how Karl’s mind worked! Thank you for mentioning Stella McCartney and other designers- I thought they paid homage to Karl better- more so because they’d have studied him as part of their professional development! My 2 cents ! Also, I enjoyed your video for the same reason- a designers take on Karl !! ! l'artiste par excellence!! Hugs 🤗, Amy

I always click on your videos right away! Always! Why? Because they are about 10 minutes. That's a time I can afford. If videos are longer, I often think: I'll watch it later! ... and then I forget about it ... 😅
