Lewis Hamilton's outfit had nothing to do with an evil prince. His outfit was about John Ystumllyn who was abducted as a child in western Africa. He was an 18th Century gardener who, through slavery times, came across from Africa to Wales and became the first black gardener in Wales. The thorns on his outfit represent the pain caused by the slavery trade. He even had a poem stitched on the inside of his jacket that was inspired by John.

I think the sand dress deserved a mention. It was a unique interpretation ("sands of time") and execution and was unlike anything else at the Gala. I don't think it was the best of the evening, but I think it deserved discussion.

I loved the bag BUT regarding the dress: she couldn’t move in it. To me, a dress = garment = has to function while moving. It’s not a statute or sculpture. The fact she couldn’t move in it makes it an unsuccessful design.

"Sleeping Beauties" also references the collection of costumes and clothing at The Met that are not on display because they are so fragile, so they must be kept away from light and air and other elements that break down the fabric. That's moreso the reason, I think, that some people chose to wear clothes that were in various states of decay and breaking down. It's a nod to the conservation efforts that The Met undertakes to preserve these "sleeping beauties" and the idea that they are worthy of being displayed but doing so will cause them to decay even more quickly which also ties in to the "garden of time" idea.

Hello! The theme “Garden of Time” was actually based on a short story of the same name by JG Ballard. I wonder if after reading the short story your thoughts would change. For example, what happens to the time flowers after getting picked or how people turn to stone at the end.

This comment. The theme had nothing to do with fairy tale princesses. It was about Ballard's story and of course, the Met's pieces that are too fragile to be in constant exhibition. I feel this analysis missed the mark by not acknowledging the story as well as the context in which this gala took place. Just as in the story, where the count is afraid of a mob outside his garden, people were protesting and been brutally stopped by the police just streets away from the Met. It speaks of a world of entitlement and how blind the elite are in this world.

Yes, I think so too. Especially the birds frozen in movement make sense apart from the glass like material. I also like the Cinderella reference even if it’s a reverse, since she is not going to be elevated to be the queen beloved by her people but instead her garden will fall and be ripped to pieces. Before I knew about the novel my first association was a Zen garden because of the timelessness of these gardens that still take a lot of work to seem so perfect. That’s why I love Luciana Damons dress. The pure white, the simple shape, the geometrical bust that reminds me of the rake patterns. I think it’s great and not boring at all.

John Ystumllyn was not an evil prince. He was an 8 year old child kidnaped from Africa who grew up in Cymru/Wales and became a gardner. A couple of years ago he was comemorated with a named rose . That was the story refrenced by the thorn necklace which encapsulated the past as well as the gardens he created. We are proud of him here.

Just regarding to the theme, I think you missed sth here - or didn't explain it that good this time. It isn't about princesses. Sleeping beauties & reawakening fashion referred to the preservation of antique garments, the battle against their inevidable decay AND old techniques. The Garden of Time is a short story placed in the victorian era about the cycle of creation, beauty and decay. - A IMO better explanation of the theme & review has HauteLeMode. Also for the view of a historian see Abby Cox.

@@desd111 Abby's take is very focused on the historical and corsetry aspects of the night, rather than from a pure fashion sense. She examines people's reactions to the tightlacing that Kim Kardashian exhibited in her dress, and why it got so much more attention from people, when there were something like 40 other celebrities also wearing corsets, then places that within the context of the debate over corsets & tightlacing that has been stretching back centuries. A very different perspective to that of Justine, but just as appreciated I think. They have *very* different perspectives on Chloe Sevigny, for example.

Hi, Justine! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. I liked Tyla's look who was, in fact ,one of the few who focused on "time" part of the theme. Her outfit was representing the sands of time and I liked the little touches like hourglass bag and makeup on her shoulder. I also liked Dove Cameron's look because they really nailed the "deconstructed dress"- that was just a well crafted piece and it fit the theme. I can't say really how well Rebeca Hall's look fit the theme because she looked like water nymph, like she just came out from the set of Midsummer Night's Dream, but she always puts an effort.

I actually loved her dress in part for how it fit with the short story ('The Garden of Time') that the theme was based on. I really loved *all* the looks that had stark black and white presence, representing the stoic march of time, the inevitability of life's hardships, the contrast between the Count on the hill and the 'rabble' of people below, etc. It gave me so much to think about, and question - are the brilliant, beautiful colors of the garden the reality, or is the inescapable black and white background the reality? Just so much to dig into here that tugs at my heart.

1:30 Actually, sleeping beauties is a term referring to the lost and forgetten fashion houses, designers or techniques;waiting to be revitalized. Like schiaparelli has been for the last 10 years. Thus, garden of time most probably refers to the collection of artifacts (the flowrs) representing such sleeping beauties let it be a sewing technique, a form, a fitting, a colour palette etc.( Kylie Jenner's corseted look might be an example of such sleeping beauty yet to be revive and become popular some day)

The connected themes were indeed much more deep than fairy tales and flowers. The deeper meaning and the connection between the two must have been obvious to the designers preparing outfits for the event. Both with the time destroying beautiful creations (like garments) and eventually turning them into dust as the exhibit highlights , and how in the story a hopeless fight to hold of time ( with the crystal flowers) to preserve something beautiful (their garden), and then eventually in the end they turned into stone (and dust one day). The relation is quite poetic. And I really loved Hamiltons outfit in that context, since we all know that most of these beautiful gardens were created and maintained by others than those who enjoyed them. Highlighting this element of history, not only was he perfectly on theme, he highlighted a specific persons story and reminded everyone to remember the past and the wrongdoings committed. The light/dark colour associating with good/evil, not good. While JLo's dress was a miss in my view for other reasons, she did channel the crystal flower from the story...so kind of on theme.

I would like to add: Keke Palmer in Marc Jacobs (both Gala and Exhibit themes), Charli XCX in Marni (both Gala and Exhibit themes), Tyla in Balmain (both Gala and Exhibit themes-->dress actually made of sand) and Dan Levy in Dia Dipasupil (Gala theme). Honorable Mention as they looked adorable together along with taking a reference from both themes, I would like to add, Hannah Bagshawe and Eddie Redmayne in custom Steve O Smith.

My personal favorite was the sand dress from Balkan worn by Tyla. It was the first one I didn’t scroll past. I just loved the texture. Yeah… maybe it’s s bit on the nose, but I love the play on materials that are not too expected for an item (like that cup made out of fur)

Tyla wore my favorite outfit. It was a gown by Balmain made of sand referencing the “sands of time”. I can’t believe u missed that one 😊. She even carried around an hour glass as her purse

Isabelle Huppert wore a dress based on a Balenciaga wedding dress her great-grandmothers actually designed, back in the 1930s. So she was very much on the theme (the original dress is from the Met's archies).

I think the Garden of time is a reference, too, in the fairy tale how everyone was asleep in the castle grounds and lay where they fell and the thick bramble grew around the castle wall and were asleep for a very long time. If I remember my Arthur Rackham correctly.

THIS is the MET Gala review I've been waiting for, and IMO the one that matters!! My Top 5 from the women: Elle Fanning's birds with cascading water by Balmain; Mindy Kaling's blooming flower by Guarav Gupta; Mona Patel's kinetic butterfly dress by Iris Van Herpen; Tyla sands of time by Balmain; and Lana Del Rey's decaying garden by Alexander McQueen. My Top 5 from the men are exactly the same as your, Justine! They understood the assignment. As the saying goes. 😂

Thank you Justine. This was fabulous. I always love your review of these galas. Truly. Anything you share about fashion, your home Reno’s. etc. because of your ethics that you use in your personal life and professional life. I have followed you for years. And I will never forget the first video of yours. It changed my course in life completely to strive for ethical fashion, quality over quantity etc. cheers Raylene

Loved your review; completely on point. If you hadn't pointed out Dilaria Findikoglu, I don't think I would have seen her creation. I looked her up and I was very excited by her work. Thank you!! I don't think that the general public (here in North America) really appreciates artists. The product seems to be completely divorced from the artist, as you mentioned. It seems that people think artists either "have it" or not. There doesn't seem to be an understanding that it takes hard work, a good education and lots of experience for an artist, as much as any other professional, to get to the top of their game. Thank you for your point of view, education, experience and hard work!

So many people looked gorgeous, but I really loved Donatella Versace's gown. There are ivy details, so I assuming it is meant to be the greenery in the garden, but to me it looks as though she is rising out of seafoam like Venus Anadyomene, and I would have put maybe pearls instead and saved it for an ocean theme. I love it.

New subscriber based on this review. Love a designer's perspective. And also that you didn't laboriously go through the looks one by one but grouped them. And really agree with your last comment - when I google "red carpet" to take a look at who wore what, if the designers names aren't featured I automatically search for another web page

I appreciate you for explaining the details of what the theme really meant! I saw many dresses having only flowers and loved them for their elegance and style but this analysis is a better perspective.

Elle fanning is on theme actually if you reference the garden if time as a short story of the same name. With the glass flowers that reverse time - she is being that glass flower.

I want to start with how much I love this video with Justine every year. It’s tradition now! Gotta mention Tyla because she was literally the sands of time. Lana del Ray looked amazing. I completely agree with you about Chloe Sevingy. Her dress was spot on for me as well. Zendaya tied with Chloe though, at least for me. I liked the garden she wore and the hummingbird at her neck was gorgeous. I loved how it was a part of the dress but also the jewelry. Lena Malfouf was also one of my favorites of the night. She looked so beautiful.

Although it was originally created for the 2018 Met Gala theme of "Heavenly Bodies", I loved designer Harris Reed's outfit & just the overall joyful vibe they emitted while wearing it.
