The theme of this MET gala was: In America, an anthology of fashion. Rihanna and Beyonce were missing but some of the guests really nailed the dress code! In this video, I'm giving a review from 1 to 5 stars + some special mentions. Whose outfit is your favorite?

OK everyone, I made the kind of mistake I hate: mistaking dresses. Blake Lively's dress is Versace, not Ralph Lauren. While preparing the video, I thought "humm... funny, that doesn't look like Ralph Lauren, they must have gotten really deep into the concept, to execute that kind of gown" but I somehow didn't check again. I apologize to the Versace team. Your gown is incredible. And thanks to the viewer who reported the mistake. Thousands of brains are so much better than one 💚

There were a number of people opting for 1960s-ish style that wouldn't necessarily have been out of bounds. In the US, there was what was considered a "second gilded age", and that was in the 1960s. It started when John F. Kennedy became president, & the very stylish Jacqueline Kennedy became First Lady.

True, they’re looking at column inches and how much exposure they will get. Nikki Minage’s team could easily have quickly made a relevant fix as gossamer ‘bibs’ were often used to permit dangerously low décolletages in that era. She just wanted exposure (!!!!!!).

I would absolutely love to see a Met Gala theme centered around making fashion out of discarded items... not just re-wearing a dress but the garment being constructed out of objects and items that get tossed aside... like water bottles or pizza boxes. The event would be forced to showcase a whole new range of designers outside the standard runway staples or force them to think outside their couture box.

@@notverynotoriousg5674 the university I attended has been doing a charity runway for eco-awareness where all the items used to construct the garments were either items being thrown away, recycled, or fished out of Long Island Sound. They’ve been doing it for probably 20yrs or more. I know since I was in high school at least. It’s always amazing! Some seriously beautiful gowns have been made out of the unrecyclable plastic caps of water bottles and reclaimed fishing line from the sound.

On a similar note to the two honorable mentions at the end, Quannah Chasinghorse brings the oft neglected Native American perspective, so her outfit may not have reflected the typical ideas of American gilded age but brought that twist to Native American fashion from that era. There is probably a lot of confusion between The US as a nation and native nations as separate sovereignties in the early 1900s, but there really is no America without considering native displacement.
@Chaotic_Pixie

Agreed but I also think the style of the dress itself --not the jewelry-- was too easily mistaken as a nod to the 1960s/1970s/1980s... especially given the color and the eyeshadow. I feel like a far more powerful statement could have been made if the silhouette of the 1880s had been embraced and paired with her traditional jewelry. I think the statement could have been INCREDIBLY powerful... instead she was reminiscent of a go-go dancer plopped into the 1980s obsession with blue eyeshadow.

I thought it was an ironic twist. They have to hold the gala to pay for the conservatorship of costume history, but they are pointing out how appalling the current gap between rich and poor is at the mo. Also they pick this era just as the the whole black slavery history is in the limelight. Letting the celebs put their own foot in it. Those who blithely wore fancy dresses without seeing the political issues underlying it really show their true colours. SJP, nails this with an homage to a freed-slave dress designer, Blake lively recreated the statue of liberty and shows off the aging of shiny materials, Men show up in gender breakthrough outfits....and then....KK...wears a famous dress said to be part of a seduction of a president... that doesn't fit her.....not of the era..... FYI Gilded means gold leaf put over cheap materials. 😆

I found a very interesting read, the employees of Condé Nast have formed a union and are trying to get the company to recognize them. So a lot of staffers, particularly of Vogue remarked that the sparkle from the MET Gala comes from their sweat. Extra long hours, underpaid labor, no recognition... It's kind of ironic that even though the theme comes from a 100 years ago, we aren't so far away from the same problems. Loved the video!

Well said. Very few critics (in the noble and honorable sense of that analytical tradition and art form) today offer much. Thank you for the explanations - it totally helped me to understand the many interpretations - this is also the first time I saw Cynthia’s look and the explanation of its point of view - Cheers 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I was waiting for your MetGala video to come out. I didn’t want to read anything under headlines or watch any other videos until I saw yours. Well worth the wait, and now I don’t need to read or see anything else. Thank you so much Justine for breaking down for us. Very enjoyable every the time.

Thanks for being so positive, I've wanted to watch someone review the dresses because I always love to hear people who know their stuff talk about the Met gala! Most of the people I saw were pretty negative for some reason, but I'm just here to have a good time man ^^'

Thank you for your perspective on the Met Gala. On the one hand, I just like looking at the glamour but then it’s fun to see how the guests stuck to the theme. I like the last special mentions the best.

I’m a subbie because you get things right. I like how you simply explain your criteria for judging and then you stay the course. Bravo (or brava) for your intelligent approach.
