Regarding the comment about whether there is such a thing as "talent" in Tip #4. My wife taught violin for many years; she could tell within the first few lessons whether a student would be good or not. She called it talent, but what she observed was that good students: 1) Enjoyed playing 2) Practiced what they were assigned to practice 3) Listened to the sounds they were making Maybe that's what talent is. Of course Justin emphasizes all of these in the beginner lessons.

I keep an Excel spreadsheet for my lessons and it amazes me that in two weeks I went from 38 changes (A - D) to 68 changes per minute. C - Am I went from 40 to 80 in two weeks (but that is a relatively easy change), And I'm an old fogey at 58. Justin's course really works.

Thanks for this video. Sometimes I get really tired from work, and combine that with things I have to do after work, I just don't feel like like practicing. The way I get over that is to tell myself I'll practice for just 5 minutes. This way it doesn't feel like even more pressure after a stress-filled day. What ends up happening is 5 minutes turns into 15 turns into an hour, sometimes more. This works better for me because I don't feel like I HAVE to do 30 minites or more, I actually want to do it.

Hey Ed. I hold my guitar in the Classical position with my foot on a wee footstall it has made ALL the difference. It made barre chords possible! I started when I was 51 (now I'm 55) and understand how you feel. My guitar teacher showed me a book of ALL the chords and scales. It was massive! No one could get through it all in a lifetime. That put it in perspective. No one cna learn EVERYTHING to do with a guitar. Everyone has to pick and choose. So don't feel overwhelmed. Just focus on one or two things at a time and you will start getting somewhere a lot faster : )

After 45 minutes it was painful to play, and after 60 minutes they started to feel numb. After 90 minutes I hardly felt my fingers anymore. Now, a month later, I'm still playing every day. And yes, my fingers still feel a bit numb. The first week after the 90 minute practice session I couldn't really play for more than a couple of minutes. Don't do the same as I did. Tip 6: Use the speed control on KZbin for a) watching instruction videos at the highest speed you can still process them at, and so saving a bit of time. Some KZbinrs speak very slowly and don't give a lot of information per sentence - for them you can speed up to 1.75 or 2.0. At least for parts that are not crucial like introductions etc. b) while you are learning songs, practice along at 0.5 speed until you don't make any mistakes 3 times in a row, then try 0.75 etc. and move up until you can do it at 1.25. If you can pull off playing along at 1.25 speed, normal speed won't be a problem and you can focus on the music itself rather than the mechanics.

Wow, great and simple tips by Justin. I've started my guitar learning journey a little over a year ago, and my progress has been relatively slow, but that's due to some inconsistency in my practice time - something Justin succinctly addresses in this video. I have made progress however, because, as I discovered, even if your inconsistent . . . but on a consistent basis ;-) you'll find yourself making progress. Weird right? LOL but true. I also could have made better progress this last year by doing more practice of the things I needed to improve and a little less of the things I had already learned. Hey Justin another excellent inspiring video, Now ive been playing for a couple of years now started with my teacher dave,who is an amazing blues/metal player and currently on xmas break sssshhhh don't tell him that ;) lol But when i start again the annoying part of playing for me is, trying to keep a practice schedule, also deciding what to practice, now dave my teacher who is a great teacher at what he does ive put across to him doing 5 min segments like with your course, but he's said before if this makes sense to you, that really i should pull away from that train of thought, and just pick a song i like that i want to learn and give it ago, otherwise if you do 5 min slots of everything then your not really benefiting on making progress and just wasting your practice time, then while your learning songs you find things to practice by doing it that way, now i don't know weather to believe him on that one but i still with my current level am at i still need a practice schedule to go by, But ill sort it out with him when i start again next week, but brilliant videos Justin really inspired me to start again after xmas break and give it a good going, also happy new year to you look forward to many more lessons over the year from you ;)

For what it is worth - I had a similar discussion with my tutor. Sometimes 5 mins is ok but to really get into something he suggested that 15mins is more like it. So....if I am learning something from scratch eg C scale in first position I'll spend 15 mins on....but once I have it sussed then I might only spend 5 mins on it as revision and 5 mins on a different scale...This really seems to be working for me. I'm definitely seeing far more progress with the 15 min blocks as there is nothing like repetition..... Often it will be 15 mins on a scale and then 15 mins improvising over the scale....putting it into practice as it were....this works exceptionally well!! As far as songs are concerned....if it is the rhythm I'm working on and there are tricky chords...it will be 15 mins purely on chord changes just straight one beat per chord really slow....then 15mins incorporating the strum pattern. If its picking...then 15 mins on a bar (or two depending on the difficulty). We are pretty much splitting my time 50:50 song vs scales. Its working super well. But then again we all learn differently.... Good luck with all that you are doing : )

www.justinguitar.com/guitar-lessons/top-5-tips-for-new-guitar-players-bc-001 1. Keep it fun! As a beginner that is your primary aim, so if to keep it fun you want to learn some songs by your favourite band that are way too hard but you'll love it anyway - then do it! I would recommend sticking to the schedules as best you can - as well! Which leads me nicely to my next tip... 2. Divide your guitar time into 2 parts - Study and Fun I recommend people try to find 30 mins a day if they want to make steady and noticeable progress, and so I suggest you do 15 minutes of 'practise' (I'll be suggesting mostly 3 x 5-minute practice sessions!) and 15 minutes on whatever you like! Could be the same stuff, it could be one part of it that you're really enjoying, or a new song - whatever - as long as it's fun! 3. Avoid finger pain Everybody gets sore fingertips when they start out, you can expect them to be sore for a few weeks (at least) but NOT painful. If they're hurting you're pressing too hard, doing too much too soon - or you bought a guitar with the strings too high from the fretboard (which is why I'm mentioning it here!). Take it easy in the early weeks of your journey and allow the skin to toughen up! I'll be giving you more tips to help this as we go through the course. If your fingers get sore then you could try: Adjusting the 'setup' so the strings are closer to the frets (check out the coming lesson with advice on choosing a guitar!)Only pressing when you need to! (loose grip over strings when working on strumming for example)Checking out some Music TheorySpacing out your practice blocks over a longer period (5 mins every hour)Read about the Guitar GreatsLearn about visualization! 4. It's about practice time, not talent! All the great guitarists I've met over the years play a lot. Like all the time. If you practice 3 hours a day you'll obviously progress faster than someone who practices 15 minutes a day - however, I don't think a beginner should do more than 30 minutes at least for the first few weeks. Playing the guitar is quite a physical thing and while playing until your fingers bleed sounds cool in Summer Of '69 [Bryan Adams], in reality, it really sucks (I've done it) and it can take weeks to recover. 5. Play more than think Many students I've met over the years seem to spend more time looking at guitar and effects reviews than they do practising. They inevitably end up with "all the gear and no idea" and most feel frustrated and unhappy with their playing. New gear won't make you play better but practice will. And thinking about it generally helps less than doing it - so get that guitar in your hands as regularly as you can!
@ronlight70136 жыл бұрын
Good ideas, good lesson. But I can tell you (if you haven’t heard me already) that what you call “a few months” for a beginner is more like a few years for a beginner starting at 65 years old with no musical aptitude. What we old guys have, however, is perseverance. So nothing will deter sticking with it, no matter how “not fun” and slow the going.
@MrSimonandmandy6 жыл бұрын
Way to go Ron!! I'm with you! Slightly younger at 55 with zero musical experience when I started 4 1/2 years ago but loving it. Still think I'm hopeless but progress is being made....even if it feels glacial at times : )

Man, I hear ya! Totally. And four-and-a half years for me, too. Many long stories to tell - and I'm sure for you, too. But do have fun!

Ec, I run into the same if I practice the same thing for than 40 minutes or so. You tend to tense up and lose dexterity and concentration. Justin's recommendation for the timer has so many benefits. This is one of them. I've learned to set specific times for practicing certain exercises. Remember, it take a while to establish muscle memory. It cannot be done in a single session. The rest time is as important as the practice time.

Don't expect to be playing songs fluently in a week. Be patient with yourself and start right from the beginning and enjoy the ride. Set easy goals to start with. There is a writer who has a goal of writing 150 words/day. She does that but sometimes it's 15000 words. Try to apply that to guitar; play a bit every day and keep it fun, play songs, remember what you are learning it for. Set really small daily goals first and mind your sleep in between (no rest = no retention). Now exhale and start at the beginners course! :D www.justinguitar.com/categories/beginner-guitar-lessons-grade-1| LievenDV | JustinGuitar Official Guide

Justin, how does the leaning count - practice or playing? Keeping a log book and timing practice exercises has been a wonderful suggestion [as are most of your tips]. But, I never quite knew where "learning" [watching video lessons, etc] fits in the time schedule. Thanks.

@Don Yep. Thanks. Been playing for 5 years now. You're in good hands with Justin. Hands down, the best guitar teacher for new/intermediate players on the net. If you haven't yet, pop onto his webpage, as each course is laid out beautifully - most have the tabs, which can reduce the learning time and is less dependent on camera angle. Additionally, his support material [blank paper, schedules, tuner, metronome, etc] are simply brilliant. It is as "proper" course from which to learn the guitar that you'll find.
