That in turn gave me the motivation to realise you can learn anything at any age. I went to college in my 30s, got a degree and changed my whole world. Thanks to the guitar and your channel. Tips for using KZbin to meet your goals 1- Determine what you want to learn specifically and why [how will help you play what you want better] 2- Find those teachers who are more interested in teaching what you want than receiving "pats on the back" and being told how great they are. 3- Stick with that series until you have mastered what it is you wanted to learn 4- Seek out instruction by that teacher off KZbin KZbin has been a wonderful place to learn, but the wealth of information [let alone the click-bait] is enough to paralyze anyone - or worse yet, fill you with bits and bobs of info that add up to very little. Happy New Year Justin. Thanks for all you've done for my playing.

Happy New Year! 2019 will be a fabulous year ... I just know it. I have somewhat suffered from PTSD in 2018 as our autistic son went through chemotherapy for a stage 4b cancer, but is in full remission and is doing awesome. Speed up to the summer, and we were flooded from Hurricane Florence and are still rebuilding. What does this have to do with guitar? Everything. I bought a used but nice one for my 60th birthday in November and was lucky enough to stumble upon Justin's course. I've been trying to play guitar since I was in my 20's, but just didn't have a systematic approach ... or good teachers. Justin, you have made all the difference. In a bit over one month, I have learned more from you (and your awesome attitude) then any time in my past. And my goal for 2019? I want to be able to play the guitar portion from Bohemian Rhapsody. Obviously not to Brian May's skill, but for it to recognizable. Thank you, Justin ... and thanks to all of you beautiful people sharing your own aspirations. Happy New Year, folks!

I have been taking Justin's course for almost two years, and am just completing the intermediate course. Though I don't usually manage a full hour a day, I am good at practicing regularly, and one of the things I love about the site is the practice routines, as I am someone who likes structure, especially in a self-teaching environment. I grew a lot over the past year, and am most proud of the finger patterns that I learned and applied to songs like "Wonderful Tonight." Playing "Needle and the Damage Done" through with the variations is probably my single proudest accomplishment as a guitarist so far. My guitar goals for 2021: - "Explore" my new fender lt 25 amplifier to learn how to get different effects (short term) - Reduce social media usage to 30 mins a day. (short term) - learn to sing at least 4 songs while playing guitar (mid term) - Complete Blues Style course on Justinguitar (mid term) - Blues Lead essential (long term) - Improve my vibrato (long term) - Learn to play "Song for a Winter's Night" by Gordon Lightfoot in time for Christmas, 2021. (long term)

Some more golden advice as far as I'm concerned from Justin. There are so many resources available for people learning these days compared to when I started messing with the guitar, but I think Justin's approach is really useful and well organised. I'm 54 now and Justin's comment about valuing time is so right, and I wish I could have studied this sort of material when I had so much more time when I was younger. I've managed to play in a covers band and do open mic stuff, but actually deep down I know I don't know anywhere near enough theory or how to apply it to be able to express myself as i'd like to. Watching the rut buster videos and the lessons with Lee Anderton really resonated with me on so many points. I've used Justins material in the past few years and I'm going to ensure I commit to using it more this year. Just a very big thank you to Justin for this resource and his time, I haven't come across many people who have this level of technical knowledge whilst also being able to identify and empathise all the 'gotchas' and personal hangups and ruts which stop us progressing on this musical journey. All the best Justin and I wish you every success in 2019.

Thank you Justin. There are a myriad of great players on KZbin. Some want to show off their talent for self gratification, some are schlepping pay sites (and I get it), but just a hand full of player/instructors have that passion to "share" the gift first, and perhaps get a few dollars tossed into the guitar case second. You, Marty, Party Marty ,Papa Stash and a few others are those that have been generous beyond belief sharing the gift. Videos are time consuming, costly and much more difficult that you make it appear. Once again... a genuine thank you. Happy New Year

2019 will be theory for me. Playing alot makes you great but actually knowing what you do *when* playing will make you awesome. It starts with not having to learn chords anymore, or having to look up stuff, starting with scales. You can just make them up cause you understand how. The time safed that way alone will make back the time spendt on learning how its done. And it will end in being able to understand what to play how to play at any given moment. So you and whoever you play with *will* sound great. Every time. No matter what you actually do and be it just noodling around without aim or goal. So yeah. Theory for me for sure. Cant avoid it forever and i think being a lousy guitarist the time is spendt best on this end. Especially when you then still have ample time for both practice and fun time every day like i luckily will.
@danr51053 жыл бұрын
I am 66 and 16 months in. I know my feelings (about practice) will change but now. Organized practice is better at the beginning (I feel I am still at the beginning.) Do not at this time use backing tracks during dedicated practice. My point is to keep practice from turning into "noodling while listening to music videos" I need to hear my guitar during practice. It is both rewarding and helpful. Justin's channel here has been more than helpful. I find that I pick perhaps 3 videos that I watch them over and over (till some level of mastering is reached) but I also watch many, many videos just one time. I am sure I put in 3 hrs per day (I do split it up.) Hands and fingers still hurt. When I learn and use new to me chords my fingertips hurt simply from a slightly different spot where the string lays. This is such great fun. This "must buy a new guitar" disease can be a problem. Buy the best/easiest to play guitar you can afford. These "lighten up the action" steps are a compromise. My first was a Yamaha FG830,could't really play it at all till the action/strings were worked over. After I decided "OK I am in" I bought a Martin D16E. I played it easily "right off the wall" (the factory setup) Playing a nice guitar will help with getting motivated. I just (well a month ago) ordered 2 Yamaha FGX5's. Summer delivery (I sell one, I ordered 2 as they take so long to get.) I am sure there will be endless comparison made between the Martin D16E and the Yamaha FGX5 (priced withing 100.00 of each other,) I paid 1575.00 with tax for the Martin.

I've just started playing (acoustic, but want to eventually play electric as well). Considering that basically leaves me just over 4 months, I want to keep them realistic (as discussed in the video) My goals are the following: 1. Learn six of the most used chords - G, Em, D, C, E, A - and be able to complete chord changes competently (e.g. move from one chord at the end of one bar and successfully change to another chord on the 1 count of the new bar) 2. Practice at least 5 days a week for 1 hr a day 3. At least begin to learn music theory 4. Be able to play and sing Footsteps by Pearl Jam 5. To have started finger picking and be able to complete the intro to Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits Thanks for your channel Justin... it really makes practising so much easier when I combine it with getting music lessons from someone who is not only very good, but gives me constructive feedback on ways to correctly complete a task, whether that be tapping to the beat, playing the right note or chord, etc.

I'm pleased that I found your lesson site and have been trying to practice using your Beginners Course. I've gotten a bit sidetracked by your Captain Anderton lesson series and the adjust your guitar series with Charlie; both are good but, as you suggest in this lesson, I need to concentrate on practice. I'm actually going to start over and slowly aim for perfection of the basics: finger placement, scales, licks, and the fingerboard knowledge for playing in different positions. Music Theory will be a later goal. I'm 76 years old and have to get a move on if I want to play with the Geezer Stadium Rockers-Eric, Brian, Paul, and all the nearly senile-so I intend to follow your suggestions for the new year. Thanks Justin!

Now though I have resurrected the desire and am beginning the journey. I have purchased, from a friend, an amazing guitar, an Epiphone 339 Pro (enough for me) and after some searching found your site. Happy New Year. I purposely do not set goals. I am in my sixties and have been playing 3 or 4 years years. My practice routine is to revisit songs you know to play so they don't fade away and learn new songs, particularly the ones you found impossible a year ago. One particular song is Johnny B Goode by Chuck Berry which was all too much 2 years ago. Break the song down into bite size bits, build on the parts you have learned until the song is absorbed. What I found is that muscle memory does exist and it does not matter if you can't nail the original tone of the song as originally recored, it was ordinary anyway and limited by the technology of the day. There is an awesome metal version by Frog Leap Studios. Most important is timing.

After following Justin's Lessons for over 3 years now, I would have to agree that he is arguably one of, if not the best guitar teacher online. He makes available a comprehensive list of sequential practical and theoretical lesson plans and songs from beginner to advanced, including areas to branch off to pursue including improvisation, fingerpicking, etc. If it has anything to with guitar playing Justin has covered it. What a way to begin the New Year with a video that has so much valuable advice included in it! What stood out that was so true is when he said at 9:16, "Don't spend time on things that really don’t give you value in your life as you get older." As a senior citizen, when I was 20 years of age I thought life would go on forever, and before I knew it, I was over 60 years of age asking myself where did the time go?

Thank you for all the time and effort you have put into this course and many blessings for 2021. My long term goals are to learn and memorise at least 3 songs that I can play well, to be able to play some simple tunes by ear and to complete the theory component of the course. My medium term goals are to stick to regular timed practices as set out in the course, to tune by ear and to learn all the notes on the fret board. My short term goals are to play learned chords clearly without looking and smoothly moving from one chord to the next.

Happy New Year Justin and other learners! 🎉 Wow, Justin, this video is coming at a great time for me. I noticed today that I’ve spent more time in the past several days watching videos than actually practicing guitar. Here’s what I’m going to do: 1) I’m going to use the Reminders app on my phone to tell me to do the things you’re laying out for me to practice (I added two while I watched this video, and I’ll add more tomorrow.) 2) I’m going to learn a cool song well and play along with the original. 3) I want to start learning licks. 3a) I want to use my looper pedal (the only pedal I plan to own till I get better) for rhythm and play some licks over the rhythm. 4) I want to get over my dislike of barre chords. 5) I’m going to England in September and want to have a beer with Justin (I’m buying). How can we make this happen, Justin? Maybe those are enough to get me started in 2019. Thanks for knowing what many of us need, Justin. 😎👍🏼

There have been numerous studies regarding Tip #4: Accountability in that announcing your goals may be a detriment. By announcing your goals, you get a premature sense of completeness. You kind of pat yourself on the back for declaring you're going to do something (and receiving praise for setting a goal), but it's not enough of a motivation to make you do it.

Play and sing entire song using the downward strum. 3.)Learn The Gambler Strum used in the Practice video. 4.)Play and Sing the entire song with chord changes and correct Strum.

Great inspiring stuff. Beginner here, 3 months in, and the thing that works for me is measuring my progress on chord changes per minute and scales trying to increase bpm. I've already felt the need to take a couple days off and have then been refreshed. Practice what is not comfortable is a mantra that has resonated. As I'm getting some basics under my feet I feel I can noodle around and make some music and not just do rote stuff. I'm lucky to be able to play and add music to my life. Happy 2019!

Thanks for the inspiration and all the great work you do! It really is amazing!

Thanks Justin, you really hit the nail on the head with your bit about "clickbait". Whilst it is true that there is a massive supply of free, quality guitar lessons online, it is sometimes very hard to tear one's self away from the damn screen and get down to practice. KZbin is definitely an addictive place, and self-discipline is absolutely necessary to get down to practicing. I wish I could have back all the time I've wasted!

Thank you for the tips Justin but more importantly the motivation to keep practicing and improving. I've been following your lessons on your website for about 6 months and I can see a massive change in my ability to play. The lessons you provide are so easy to understand and are structured in a magnificent way. Keep up the hard work and I hope to see you in the new year's honours list, 2019, for services to music and teaching guitar.

I have set myself a target to ultimately be able to play all songs on the rolling stones 500 greatest songs of all time. I started my guitar journey with your beginner course in 2018 which I completed. In 2018 i applied what i learnt and have ticked off 5 songs of the 500. In 2019 i hope to apply what i learn from your intermediate course and apply them to play 10 songs from the rolling stones list. Plus I hope to do an open mic this year with my daugther on the keys and vocals. Thanks so much for your awesome lessons and tutorials. Happy New Year!

my goal at playing guitar for next year is to keep it fun. guitar is my hobby and i do it to escape stress and pressure of my life. i often get frustrated really fast when can't achieve sth i set as i set myself goals that are way to difficult at the time. so playing becomes more hard work than fun. Please keep it up Justin, you brought me to the guitar and i found a new passion just as you have with playing. happy new year!

Last year I studied theory while at work and I didn't realize it took so much out of me, mentally, and now I'm more into learning my first song or songs since I know the theory and I can go back anytime into practicing my theory. I'm also planning on writing a couple of songs and building my own small home studio where I can record and take ideas from my favorite bands. Also thank you so much Justin, you were the first Guitar teacher that made me take theory very seriously and I havent looked back. I'm also going to take my first lessons with a teacher. This is just another year and another time too get better. Happy late New Years dude!!!

Practice in your mind. This worked so well for me. I was struggling with the picking in More than words, I would sit watching tv tapping out the picking with my right hand. I've now got the first section done and ready to move onto the next section. Keep up the good work Justin

Oi Jusso. I watched your videos when I was younger. About 4 or 5 year ago and I really thought you were the best with regards to your way of teaching. Your demos of the songs were great and your explanations were reasonable and understandable. Unfortunately due to life I stopped playing cause it's a tough gig. Now I'm 30 and my girl bought me a 3k Cole Clarke guitar for my bday and I searched for "how to play harvest moon" on google, and your vid was the first hit. I must say my friend, your way of talking to your audience and explaining things like a boss amazes me. I've learnt how to play harvest moon in one day thanks to your great explanation and my prior 'skill'. Now, because I've been browsing your vids on KZbin all day (which are free and exemplifies how much of q boss you are), your new years message just came up and guitar tips aside (although great), your 'philosophical' message is a really important one, and one that I 100% u understand. I think it's great that you're passing those kinds of messages to the world because we need more of it. The 'as you get older' was solid mate and it makes me want to shake your hand ma man. Keep up the great work. You're doing a good thing and it's not unnoticed. Have a good year brother, Alex

Happy New year Justin. Started teaching myself about 6 weeks ago and stumbled across your beginners course just last week. Really helps with giving some structure to my learning. The one minute chord changes are a great idea. It's difficult as a beginner to pick goals but I'm going with just being able to play and sing a few songs comfortably in front of family/friends. Thanks for all your hard work putting all of what you do together.

Here I'm watching this a bit late in the year, but all this advice will still apply in 2020! Just started and I want to thank you Justin for having so many free lessons for beginners. I'm on a limited budget right now so I can't pay for lessons yet --- although I do plan to get your music theory course, that is a reasonable price for such knowledge.

Ive been learning from you since I started 5 years ago & I used to just learn song lessons but now I’ve actually found interest in the theory to better myself & again you have it all on here for us & they’re very well put together. Hi Justin. Been playing for nearly a year now. I am lucky enough to have a mate who is a good guitar teacher and has been giving me skype lessons, but from the very beginning he recommended you and your website to supplement those lessons, and between you you have helped me a lot on my guitar journey, so I would like to thank you most sincerely for your part in my guitar journey so far. I have just started learning to play the lead part of "Apache" by the Shadows which is kinda ahead of my current level, but I have made a start, and by the end of 2021 I want to be able to play it to a reasonable standard ( A lesson on this song would be great by the way, please???), and by the middle of the year I would like to be able to sing and play at the same time. Wishing you and all the team at Justinguitar a Happy New Year

Haha, click bait is how I got here in the first place! My plan for 2021 is to graduate from your grade 2 course. With seven lessons divided equally over the year that's about 7 weeks for week and I am still left with about 20 days at the end. Need to get back to the 50/50 split between playing and practicing since playing has just been FAR TOO MUCH FUN. Wishing you the best this year bro!

Great advice Justin. I've struggled with wasting time on the "endless scroll" of social media. I deleted the Facebook app from my phone. I allow myself :30 minutes of KZbin each day--I spend most of it watching guitar lesson videos. Beyond that I've cut my social media time down to nearly nothing. I feel like I've gained several hours each day.

Happy New Year to you too. Another great video. What I like most about your videos is that you understand about motivation and the importance of having fun with your playing. I haven't played as much guitar as I would have liked to in 2018 due to other commitments (mainly work) but one of my objectives for 2019 is to try and practise and play for at least an hour a day. The other thing I want to do is learn more new songs as I feel that playing the same tunes over and over is like treading water and doesn't help you improve. Finally, I'd like to get back into playing with other people. Practising and playing with a looper or backing tracks is fine but there's nothing that improves your musicianship as much as playing with other people, so I'll be going to more jam sessions and open mike nights to try and get back into playing with other musicians. I don't think I need to buy more gear as with 4 electrics and 5 acoustics (including 2 resonators and a Weissenborn), I have more guitars than I have time to play, but I might invest in the odd pedal or two. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks for all your hard work and the time you put in. You really are the best guitar tutor on the net.
