If I am not going to bend the b or e string , i always use finger 2 and 4 on those strings. I think it is better for me to find alot of reasons for my pinkie to get as much use as possible. If I am going to do a bend it's just as easy to shift over at that point to have the 3rd finger in place for the bend. That just works for me !
@JimKernix5 жыл бұрын
I used to use 2 & 4 for the fingerings but not anymore thanks to you - very insightful!

Justin doesn't seem to be a big proponent of practicing scales, but personally i couldn't be more in favor of doing. I never really did it myself when i first started learning to play guitar, but after having done them for a while the benefits are immense. The benefits of practicing scales are not just about memorizing the scales but training your coordination, speed, timing and different patterns. The 'secret' to practicing scales is not just doing them up and down, but playing them in different patterns. Examples could be playing them in groups where you play three or four notes up the scales and then go back to the next step of the scale (A-C-D-C-D-E-D-E-G-E-G-A) Another way is to play in different intervals where between each note of the scale you jump up either a third, fourth, fifth or sixth step of the scale above the current note, e.g. with a third you would play a-d-c-e-d-g-e-a, etc. Another way instead of playing up and down the same pattern is to play up one pattern and down the next. Doing such exercises for 5-10 minutes a day can greatly improve your playing in many ways, and can also be done while doing other things such as watching tv. A great advantage of this type of focused playing is that in 5-10 minutes you can play as many notes as you would otherwise do in a normal 1-2 hours normal playing session making your practice time a lot more effective.

Thank you so much for this Justin. I really hope you will post Pattern 3, 4 and 5. And show us some playing examples of licks that we can use with those patterns like you've done as you demonstrated this pattern. It would be awesome if you could do your videos in such a way where you also consider the more advanced player who already knows the pattern but want to learn how to be more creative with it. I really look forward to pattern 3, 4, & 5 if that's what you're planning. It would also be great to continue to teach us about the importance of the root in each pattern so we have a compass of how to move around the fingerboard and if you can teach us how to jump around from top of the fretboard to the bottom. Special thanks!

Check out Justinguitar.com/ Great Diagrams of all 5 postions. Minor, and Major too :) And he refers to these "patterns" as patterns, BUT Also, there "CAGED" shape names. There is an importance to knowing the 5 shapes for arranging patterns/scales in a efficiant way :)

Thanks for your videos. I particularly like the visual diagram as you're playing it, oftentimes you can't actually see the players fingertips to see what strings are actually pressing on or they do it so fast you can't really tell. I'm finding more difficulty in having the right hand in the right place to be able to hit the right string, as you said with a good synchronization.... I wish more teachers would go over the right hand more than they do or I should say the strumming hand.

The different patterns of the pentatonic funtions similar to modes. a 5 note pentatonic, means 5 different available degrees, modes. If your using one pattern for the 1-4-5. (in A) I like using pattern 2 for the 4, pattern 3 for the 5. (its all the same 5 notes, re-used right) Interesting things happen using the pentatonic like modes; the 4 (D)becomes "neutral" (no 3rd) & The 5; (E) is close to the minor pentatonic, with the exception of the 5th degree, Theirs No 5th, the 5th is raised (Augmented) I think of it as a flat 6 vs a Sharp 5th because the 5th (E) has a minor 3rd (G) Understanding the difference between minor and major pentatonic, which degrees are shared, which come from the minor pentatonic, the degrees of the major pentatonic. I'm getting into mixing the 2. for a hybread scale. which is different in how its played. it's stretegic note picking. and knowing how to mix them, where the good switch/ancor notes are. which combinations when mixing "resolve". There's a LOT to blues. Understanding how it works is smashing your head against the wall frustrating! and because the 5 chord (which is minor, is almost always subbed for major or Dominant. Incorperating Melodic minor for major blues, Harmonic for minor (I believe thats correct,!?) is HUGE. This is new me, and I'm onto something :)))) How far down the rabbit hole are ya willing to go :) It's deeper than it appears Great video Justin! Just thought I'd chime in my 5 cents. Cheers :)

Hi Justin, I think it's an historical thing, the fingering thing you spoke about in this video Pattern 2 pentatonic scale. I think the older tutor books (available in the 1950's -1960's and possibly even now etc.,) are showed the fingerings etc., prevalent for the music of their time, either classical or dance band stuff etc., etc., i.e., pre. the 1960's music and the British Blues Boom! I can remember people saying Keith Richards wasn't a very good guitarist because he slurred his notes etc., but that is all part of the Blues or Rhythm and Blues style of guitar playing that he was trying to emulate, and it was not really understood by older generation of people in the UK at the time, but was picked up on by lots of young British guitarist who were also trying to emulate Rhythm & Blues!

What's the position of pattern 2? The Sky is Crying! Couldn't play the song without it. Excellent tip on the fingering. You have to decide if you simply want to play scales fast, or play music. I have seen that first-finger/pinky fingering as well. It only works if you are trying see how fast you can play the scale, or to use it to gain pinky strength/minimum movement skill.

It's like the pattern of the major scale, right?
@EpicTurtlezHD18 жыл бұрын
No it's a pentatonic scale, which is completely different. For example, the C major/A minor scale consist of 7 notes and an octave while the C major/A minor pentatonic scale consist of 5.
@justinguitar8 жыл бұрын
+Lefteris Savva well all scales have patterns that link together, just due to the way the notes are repeated on the guitar neck. So in that respect yes. But it's a different sounding scale with different use!

I have a question are these patterns connected ? The second pattern of Minar pentatonic scale looks exactly like Major pentatonic scale ? Please could somebody explain me that , I am getting confused :(

Simple my friend....the minor and major pentatonic scales are the same series of notes starting in different places (e.g A minor = A C D E G & C major = C D E G A - same notes)
