Hope y'all having a fab weekend. I messed up the order of the lessons in this series a bit and have re-edited them to fit what I'd planned. Basically, I somehow lost the 'script' (my bullet points I make before filming) and went right from Pattern 2 into the lesson on 3rds… as I was filming there was a niggle in my gut saying something wasn't right, but I was running late and just cracked on. It was only when I went to film the next pair of lessons yesterday that I realized what had happened. And I think linking P1 and P2 should be done before learning 3rds - and it means we get back to the two 5 min practice slots for each lesson too. The 3rds lesson and the new one on motif development will be out next weekend. Sorry for any confusion!

As a beginner I'm so glad to have stumbled onto you and others to help me learn how to make my 🎸 talk. Much respect for you an your style of teaching. I'm just starting on scales, I have a Fender Acoustic electric, and have to ask. Can the same scale excercises be use from Electric rock & Acoustics? I'm pract daily an my fingers are callous, bought my 🎸 in July 2020 but I getting eager to learn a song, although I have so much to learn on Strumming, finger picking, and learn timin as well as rhythm.

Kesley : I really admire your honest transparency and the kind thoughtful words you wrote to Justen! As a teacher of various subjects for decades myself, I agree with you wholeheartedly on Justen‘s exceptional ability to communicate and teach! I want to encourage you to keep practicing and having fun doing it! Also, remember that regular consistency is better than sporadic marathons. It’s much more beneficial to practice 10 to 30 minutes per day then it is to practice several hours two or three times per month. Also, not only am I an experienced teacher of various subject matter but I also have spent a great deal of time over the months (too much actually) searching out and carefully evaluating mini KZbin guitar teachers. Since you said you are basically beginning your guitar journey, let me save you hours and hours of time by telling you Justin is as gifted in teaching guitar as anyone out there and better than the vast majority. Stick with Justen. Support him and practice his lessons regularly and you cannot go wrong! I would not recommend trying to invest time in lots of teachers. If you would like one more outstanding guitar teacher to follow on KZbin I would also recommend Marty Schwartz. Best wishes, Wade

You are clearly aiming for great things and having musical goals is vital. So too are the foundations to help you get there. Hi Justin 👋 👋 Love your lessons there great help. The 5 pentatonic major patterns. I noticed there all in the key of root note G. Can these major patterns be applied to any other root note or is there separate patterns for each root note.

Hi Justin, Please can you explain WHY it is called "Pattern 2"? What gives it the number "2" as the pattern? And why is Pattern 1 called Pattern 1 and Pattern "3" called "Pattern 3" and so on. I have heard there are 7 Patterns also, is that correct? Why 7? I have also heard them called "Scale Shapes", is that the same? I have been so confused by this. I dont think its the number finger you start with, Its not the the string number is it? It's not the fret number? IS it the number note in the scale you start on? ( But you started on the root note G, number 1 note in the Pattern 2 scale). I just dont get it, this numbering system of the scale shapes. I was really hoping you would explain this, but unless I missed it, I dont think you did explain. Many thanks Stuart, Nov 08 2021

Hi. Pattern 1 is pattern 1 by convention. It just is. Be happy at the universality of people knowing what you mean if you say Pattern 1. Likewise the other four - making five of these type of patterns. Scale shapes can be used to describe them also. There are five patterns in one system called the CAGED system - named because the patterns form around what can be viewed as either a C, A< G, E, or D chord shape with other notes surrounding. There are seven patterns in a different system called 3-notes-per-string. Justin strongly recommends learning the 5-pattern CAGED system first. Cheers 😊 | close2u | JustinGuitar Official Guide & Moderator [ www.justinguitar.com/ ]
@david28216
@david28216 2 жыл бұрын
How I understand it (please correct me if I'm wrong): There are five patterns. Search Justin's channel or KZbin for the so-called CAGED system. Five letters, five patterns. Some people use the word "box" rather than "pattern". Within a box you play a pattern, so box 1 and pattern 1 are used synonymously. With some good will, you can discover the shape of a A chord in the one box, the shape of a C chord in the other box, the shape of a D chord in another box, et cetera. What's important is that on the fretboard the A-shaped pattern always follows the C-shaped pattern when you move your hand towards the sound hole of the guitar. Always. The G-shaped pattern always follows the A-shaped pattern. And so on. As a little memory aid, people came up with the term CAGED, but it's not important how you name this system. You could also say AGEDC or GEDCA, etc. The only thing important is that C is followed by A, etc., what I already wrote. And CAGED is easier to remember than AGEDC or any of the other possible names you could form. Because of the easily rememberable name CAGED, some people therefore call the C-shaped pattern the pattern 1, and A would be number 2, G would be number 3, E number 4 and D number 5. But the C-shaped pattern is a pretty hard one for a beginner, and the A-shaped pattern is perhaps even harder. It's not reasonable to teach a beginner the two hardest patterns first. The G-shaped pattern is much easier, so beginners usually learn the G-shaped pattern first. Therefore, many people including Justin think of G Major as pattern 1 because it's usually the first pattern a beginner learns. Following the order of the shapes, the E Major shaped pattern is then pattern 2, D Major is pattern 3, C Major is pattern 4 and A Major is pattern 5. The point where it becomes confusing is when you learn the pentatonic scales. The special thing about any pentatonic scale is that one pentatonic scale pattern can be used to play two different keys at the same time: one major key and one minor key (search for "relative minor"). So when playing pentatonic scales, pattern 1 gives you a G Major pentatonic scale but also all the notes in an E Minor pentatonic scale. And according to the order CAGED (or GEDCA or EDCAG), pattern 2 gives you an E Major but also a D Minor, pattern 3 gives you a D Major but also a C Minor, pattern 4 a C Major but also a A Minor and pattern 5 gives you a A Major but also a G Minor. Hope that clarified it.
