Thanks Justin! This is magic. I don't think "The Ventures" back in the 60s and 70s ever sang a song. They made a whole career of exactly this melody playing as I'm sure you know. Cheers!

I've been doing this for a long time without realizing the benefits. When I don't know what to play or if I'm just noodling on front of the TV I'll do this without thinking. Thanks for the lesson. I've learned a huge amount of things from your videos.

Great video! This is the exact process I've been using to learn to sing more difficult songs, by tabbing them out on guitar first. Then I can play through the tab as a quick reference, rather than searching through the audio file for the right part, which tightens up my feedback loop for learning to sing it.

Great stuff. I m encouraged to practise scales again. at 59sh I began to play banjo, playing melody as my aging fisherman/ shearers hands are so slow at learning to get chords . As i progress i often guess the chords by the melody . So thankful for singing in school and now church.
@michaelzimmer11155 ай бұрын
I found out decades ago that I could figure out the melody better in context of playing chords (open usually). Why? I don't know for sure, but maybe because the melody contained notes from the underlying chord, reducing in effect the "search space."

Hi Justin, would you be able to prepare some lessons on how to make arrangements for guitar where you combine the melody and rhythm on one guitar?
@justinguitar2 жыл бұрын
For that, it would really help if you tackle the lessons of grade 7 www.justinguitar.com/classes/advanced-guitar-course-grade-seven. These cover some concepts that are crucial foundations to fluently think of chords and melodies at once. If that is beyond you at this time, it will be harder but you will at least know the basics of how scales and chords work. | LievenDV | JustinGuitar Official Assistant

This is the only way I play guitar now. I just could not master chords and strumming, and I haven't mastered playing melodies one note at a time, but I am so much better at that than anything else on guitar. I learn them off KZbin, one phrase at a time. It is fun and interesting, especially figuring out the easiest finger movements to hit the right notes, or moving it around on the fret board.

Hi Justin ,Another interesting video, I will give this a go. At present I play simple melodies from top line fake books. first four frets or frets 8 to 12 . I can play hundreds of songs this way. but never actually learning the songs by memory. My idea was that if i can do this with ease, using embellishments i will make the simple melody sound good and interesting. I am now not sure if this is possible .I would really appreciate your thoughts on my "method" Cheers Mike

Figuring out song melodies on guitar is what I do most on guitar. Steve Winwood's Can't Find My Way Home is one of the first full songs that I figured out. I am still building on the little nuances of the vocals on electric and acoustic guitar. Thanks for this video! I always thought my efforts were not what real guitarists did.

I do love trying to find melodies on guitar and I the first song I tried to learn was I Do I Do I Do by ABBA. Took me a while but got there. Another good ABBA song is Fernando. They’re mostly on the g b and high e strings. In the open position. Thanks for the lesson. I did work out Molly’s Lips,by Nirvana on my own 😁 The chords not melody.

thank you for the video, is there a tutorial on you channel about how to adapt the melody's tonality to fit your voice? say when it is too high or too low. (I am a beginner) I assume some people use a capo for that, which can also help to manage to reach some more complex chords (with small hands), yet I don't know yet a lot about capo and arrangements.

great lesson, just a question . is it better to find the melody on on strings first or chords?? for example for hallelujah. the melody on a string is G to A which is moving up one tone but the chords are C to Am which is down tow tones, is kinda confusing for me
@justinguitar2 жыл бұрын
The exact melody will be on single notes while the chords of the key use several notes of that key at once. That doesn't mean you can only play notes of the chord you can play over. by default, the notes of the key will always work over the chord but some will work better than others. If you want to know how that works: check out this lesson about diatonic chords: www.justinguitar.com/guitar-lessons/chords-in-a-key-diatonic-triads-mt-421

Ok so a question, the few notes that are played outside of the chord, how am i supposed to know if I’m allowed to play them or not? Is it based on the major scale or the key? How do i know? Because before this video i thought you’re only allowed to play notes that are just in the chords, at least for a beginner Please someone answer :)
@justinguitar Жыл бұрын
There are two fundamentals to use as a guide here. [1] If it sounds good it is god. [2] Use the scale of the key. If the chord progression is in the key of C major, use notes from the C major scale. Cheers 😊 | Richard_close2u | JustinGuitar Official Guide & Approved Teacher
