I am completely obsessed with this band right and this song. It's "Lucretia my Reflection" by the Sisters of Mercy! I am a big fan of goth music and right now I can't stop listening to this music, running, working out, pontificating. Please, let me know in the comments if you've dabbled in "goth" (despite their rejection of that label).

I worked at the F Club in Leeds in 1980 and Andrew was behind the dj desk looking fantastic. A club full of punks and a guy who looked like a vampire playing cool music, great times I will never forget. I was at the Sisters first gig and instantly loved this band and went on to become a goth myself in the 80s/90s. Leeds... What a great city that I miss tremendously ❤️

Sisters of Mercy are masters of repetition. Each song goes in circles, putting the listener into a trance-like state, with each circle adding a new layer as the song progresses. Their slow paced stuff are also great, with Never Land being a prime example.

Lyrically every song was a masterpiece, Eldritch was all killer, no filler. His ego wouldn't have allowed him to release anything he felt did not meet his ridiculously high standards. Everything he did he saw as a reflection of himself and omg, did he love himself. My favourites are songs like Lights and 9 while 9, so much humour in them as well as been unbelievably cool.

Eldritch is something of a computer whiz, he programmed all the sequences and did quite a bit of the production. The brutal drum sound is a Yamaha RX5 sampled by a AKAI S900 and then put through a Yamaha SPX90 reverb preset and then Drawmer gate set to taste. Not sure if the SPX90 preset is room, hall, or plate, but all three have a nice metallic thud to them. I'd say there was probably a compressor at the end of the chain too, but it's hard to be sure. The RX5 drum machine was great because you could easily adjust the pitch of each sample, so here you can tell they've set it up so the drums sound kind of flat and loose. It's that classic combination of a super dry drum sample, tuned down a touch and then slathered in super metallic lofi reverb. That and lots of comb filtering on the other instruments is the sound. When I say comb filtering, I mean time based effects of any kind that are set in such a way as to cancel out frequencies and give everything a very metallic "recording in a drain pipe" kind of sound. It might chorus, flanger, delay, or reverb, but it's set to sound metallic and comb out frequencies. If you want your music to sound gothic, learn about comb filtering, from the short delay on the drum in Nightclubbing to the Carlsboro flanger on Flat Field, comb filtering is THE sound. Of course, you could always just record everything through a drain pipe.

What you fail to mention is that Patricia Morrison is the most beautiful looking woman in Goth. Fantastic song- timeless. I think the Floodland album is the perfect release by The Sisters of Mercy, whilst First and Last and Always is seen as 'true' by many, this has no filler whatsoever. What you fail to mention is that Patrician Morrison didn't play the bass on Floodand. She was a prop. And that Andrew Eldritch always seriously resented being referred to as goth [they weren't] and didn't want anything to do with it. Their concerts would start off with The Stooges Funhouse and a roadie turning on the dry ice until it filled the venue. I got to see them live, so I know. Vision Thing. I LOVE this album too and you made me laugh with you reminiscing about your youth and going to the club! I remember when I first heard it, I was completely engulfed and mesmerised by it! My husband told me of the story upon hearing its release on the radio, he hand his band mate were totally bowled over by it! Thank you for this! You’re awesome!! 😂👌🏻💕

Floodland is a top 10 album of all time for me and I'm basically a hard rock/metal guy. Saw them a couple of months ago at The Forum here in Melbourne (you're stomping ground!) and they were superb.

One of the most underrated UK bands. Eldridge has done some exemplary covers from Dolly Parton (Jolene) to the Rolling Stones (Gimme Shelter) as well as penning classic tracks of his own, Some Kind of Stranger is a stand out for me. Just an excellent all round band.

Yes Justin, thanks for this public service announcement and using your platform to shine a light on this underrated classic. The Sisters Of Mercy are soooo underrated and Floodland is defo one of the best albums from the last 30 years. The legendary Jim Steinman's production on this elevates the drama, pomp, and windswept epicness of this album.....Can you do Temple of Love '92 Ofra Haza remix and Vision Thing next please?

As someone who loved Punk and New Wave, I never got into this band. I first heard their music in the 90's on MTV on 120 mins. But I never checked them out until about a year or two ago. I wish I looking into them ages ago.

I love them. Each single and album is a different experience with this band. 'When you don't see me' is a song I can almost hear you guys doing a cover, maybe changing the key up. 'You could be the one' too, fun stuff. 'Nine while Nine' in your voice would sound great in any size stage. Thanks for bringing them to the attention of new generations. Their sound was groundbreaking. It revolutionized alternative music.

Oh my, this was a trip down memory lane. Loved that band back then and still think they are great. I believe we all just didn’t grasp how great they really were at the time. It’s so refreshing hearing you talk about them. My friends and I sometimes joke about the time when we were young and would go out to that one club where there was this DJ who covered a wide spectrum of music genres to cater everyone’s taste…thus, “goth gang set” would be kicked off with the Sisters of Mercy, right after the “grunge guys” would leave the dance floor…hilarious…And right after the “goth gang” was done everyone else would storm the dance floor once Range against the Machine started “killing in the name of”…meanwhile the hippies would go out to smoke some herbs…ha ha, good old times LOL😂😂 I have fond memories connected to this band…so thank you!!

I finally got to see The Fields of the nephilim at 02 last week, a band i think you'll like. Check them out, been around since the 90s and still amazing, these two bands very much collide with each others style, it's Goth, they may not like that term, but it's goth lol. Edit: indeed you don't need anything under a good leather jacket, hence i don't wear Ts if it's warm, just my leather.

I love how The Sisters of Mercy, who haven't released an album in 30 years, remain relevant enough to creep into something I see about once a year. I went to see Pantera/Lamb of God a few months back, and LoG's intro music (Memento Mori) sounded like a cover of Marian to me. I looked it up after the show and didn't know their singer, Randy Blythe, is a fan of TSoM.

I adore the Sisters of Mercy. First and Last and Always is one of my favourite albums. I used to follow the Mission around on tour back in the late 80s after they went their separate ways from Andrew Eldritch. It was a lot of fun, interesting times for sure. I do like this track and album too, I played it a couple of weeks ago. For me the earlier stuff is better but this is great as well. Top track!
