No amount of praise is enough for this band! I'd also add: another amazing aspect to Andy Sturmer's acumen (aside from being the vocalist *and* the standing drummer of Jellyfish) is his lyrics, which are across-the-board brilliant. loaded with clever wordplay and colorful metaphors. Just every square inch of their records is well-considered and carefully appointed.

I saw Jellyfish for the first time in the early 1990ies on German TV and I was completly flashed! What a great and undeserved underated band! Three great singers (Sturmer, Manning, Falkner)! The lead singer the drummer, playing while standing! They mashed up the influences of late Beatles, late Beach Boys, Queen and pre-commercial Supertramp and created their own phantastic sound. Until today I follow each member of the group. A re-unfication would be a dream become true. Thank you for this clip and best regards from Braunschweig, Germany.

I only discovered Jellyfish a couple of years ago, through Produce Like A Pro when Warren Huart did an analysis of the tracks on Bellybutton. I was absolutely blown away by the music and the talent and the more I learned and heard the more impressed I became. Not only are the albums awesome but the band do actually pull it off live. They do sound as good as the record - if there are bits missing then that does not detract at all from the performance and the music. I remember discovering jellyfish when the king is half undressed was released. At first I didn’t get it. One year later my brain decided to work and OMG….they are just pure brilliance.

Most of the crowd was ready with the hand claps in New Mistake when I saw them, they lit up and it was so awesome 👏👏

Amazing band! 2 of my favourite albums ever, never tire of listening to them. Even the instrumental versions are amazing, so much going on. 3/4 of Jellyfish have a band called a The Lickerish Quartet who are just as amazing, maybe you should do a critique 😉

Thank you for this. I can't wait to check them out. Listening to Fortunately as I type this, got a big 10cc vibe about it which is always a good thing.

2 years too late but ofc Justin, you LOVE Jellyfish - thank you. I put both my cassettes into a time capsule and then bought the albums on disc, along with what every merch item of theirs i could find ( thank you for playing Vancouver B.C. Canada btw. you were wonderful ) and now 30 years later I am giving the cassettes to my daughter. She discovered your music on her own so she beat me to That one - we watch your channel and love your content. Cheers from Canada.

I salute you for saluting Jellyfish, Justin. I remember the rave 5-star review their first album got in Q magazine, so i rushed out to buy it. It's astonishingly accomplished for a debut. The lyrics, vocals & arrangements are so on-point. I must confess that their follow-up "Split Milk" didn't resonate with me as much, but it probably due to it being less immediate. Since it's release some people (perhaps contrarians) claim it's even better. I'm not sure i buy that but i'll give it another spin

I felt exactly the same as you when Spilt Milk first came out, but it has grown on me over the last 30 years and I now put it on par with the debut. They're both just SO well crafted, insanely catchy, and beautiful.

I heard a rumor that when studio engineers and owners want to show off their rigs and speakers for new clients and investors that one of the albums they like to play is SPILT MILK as it's so sonically amazing. Is this true?
@royalmonocle13222 жыл бұрын
I've heard that about Spilt Milk too. Same with The Nightfly by Donald Fagen and one of the Kate Bush LPs (The Sensual World, maybe?)

It's the one I use to set up car stereo EQ, and would use if I were still setting up live sound rigs at the occasional local music show. It's a lush album that covers more sonic range than most artists can hope to cover in an entire career. Why not use it as a sonic reference?

The castanets, vocal melody and string arrangement in New Mistake are things of pure, unadulterated beauty. I think it's as near to perfection as you can get.

Thank you so much for making this and for breaking down some of their brilliance into easy to understand language. Jellyfish - the most underrated band of all time, but to those who know - stardust. ✨️

After seeing the video for That Is Why back in the day, I jumped on their bandwagon and never looked back. I've bought nearly everything they ever released, despite being just as into what was in fashion back then. I think people got it, but the timing was off, and the radio and tv was wall to wall grunge by the time Spilt Milk came out. Top 5 all time album for me. And New Mistake is a perfect song. Unbeatable.

Thanks for the introduction to Jellyfish, Justin! Great band....trying to get my hands on vinyl versions of their albums...fingers crossed. Cheers!

My favourites are the two 7"'s they made with A - New Mistake / B - He's My Best Friend and A - The Ghost At Number One / B - All Is Forgiven. Been seeing Jellyfish getting quite a few mentions in the last couple of years which is great to see.

Thank you sir. Always Brilliant. I have both albums coming. Sound of Vinyl reissued both. Bellybutton should be here tomorrow. Spilt Milk is not far behind . Their output was short-lived but incredibly important. What they created is very special, creative and intelligent. IMO

Having discovered your KZbin channel/podcast through your appreciation for Ren, I am delighted to learn you hold Jellyfish in such high regard. Gosh, I've loved listening to them over the years. So many great tunes. And I don't know many people in my circles who even know who they are! Something of a tragedy, as far as talent appreciation goes.

Jellyfish is a band full of brilliant musicians. Both lineups (Chris and Jason) (Eric and Tim) have their pros. I am fortunate to have found them and they just magically pull of great music. Their solo work is just as amazing

So - Lyle Workman did some of the guitars on Spilt Milk, and I got in his ear about it. He did MANY takes, and they usually went back to take one or two -
