Mr Hawkins, regarding how especially European continent is hard these days because of Brexit, Covid and now the war. There are eg in Switzerland a lot of smaller festivals like Gampel or a couple of trainstations with Thurbo from your home to Winterthur to participate at the Musikfestwochen. You really rocked Winterthur 11yrs ago (so already more than 7 yrs after „I believe in a thing called love“). I didn‘t know The Darkness back then and so didn‘t most in the audience, but you rocked it. Doing shows at medium size festifals in the DACH region I‘m quite sure that could work. Go for Musikfestwochen and Gampel 2023, use the momentum that the Taylor Tribute gave you and try it! I‘m guess it‘ll be hard to get such a boost in regards of people googling and liking you and The Darkness ever again. Such an opportunity!!!

Hi Justin! I have some questions about your not-too-personal and professional life in Switzerland: 1) I'm curious whether you've picked up any of the native language or day to day culture being that you've lived in Switzerland for a number of years. Is there anything special you've been teaching your daughter about England as she grows up so that she will learn about your roots? Do you think she has a concept that you come from another place? 2) I'd like to know if you listen to any Swiss music and whether you can make an episode with a sampling of the best bands and artists you believe Switzerland has to offer (past and/or present). Would you say that the Swiss music scene influences some of your musical choices these days, or do you still mostly resonate with US and UK based music? Thanks for being the treasure you are and giving us some daily laughs and musical culture! -- Marsha

I have been a rhythm guitar player, singer/song writer in my band for the last 10 years. In 2019 my bass player moved away so I had to become a bass player to keep the band going. And it's been an awesome journey to write and learn songs on the bass. I would encourge every guitar player to also get a bass and learn the bass parts to every song you know on guitar. Maybe start with something bluesy so you can get past only playing the root notes. You'll wish you would have done it sooner. Just knowing the ins & outs of the bass parts to the songs you are playing will help broaden your musical perspective, especially if you're a song writer, it's a must.

On the bass question just go for it - I learnt using tab (got the tab for the Beatles and Smiths songs easy enough ) then just played along to the songs to pick it up - also a book on where to find all the chord progressions and scales on different parts of the fret board.. then keep practicing that. Adding more songs to your list..You don’t need an expensive bass. After that go down to a local jam night and ask to play - find someone who knows a song you know - or just play a blues jam with other musicians will give you confidence - even just playing the root notes in time will help develop an ear for the chord changes too.

I have a request Justin, would you consider recording an acoustic version of Christmas Time (Don't let the Bells End) for us here, and make it available on iTunes ? Oh, and if you could sneak the Justin Hawkins Rides Again theme tune into it that would be magnificent. Thank You.

I literally only come for the Theme Tune. I've never actually watched a post in it's entirety. Brilliant Channel.

To create a vocal track, do you do what Jagger calls a vowel movement? Basically vocalizing gibberish, then find lyrics.

I find as I'm doing gibberish key words pop out and I riff off that.

But what I will say, personally...I CANT STAND making words fit after the fact. I really to tend to try and let inspiration just hit and write the lyrics on the fly...I CAN NOT be trying to count syllables and find the words to fit. Feels too contrived at that point.

@@mchamberlain7408 Bowie used to just clip lines out of magazines and paste them together. Daimond dogs

@@Postmortumaz yes!!! I tend to write key words on a big page and the occasional full line...then when I do a vocal take I just look at the page and go for it. The end of a song called "hail hail hallelujah" used that technique and the entire vocal on innoculate the time used a similar system. once I think too much things get predictable and boring...I like just going for it haha. The Bowie technique was used on several albums of his... As if he needed to 🤣

Love that fleece Jus mate. ACDC openers, just made my day, yaasss! ✊ Guitar openers that are instantly recognisable (Smoke on the Water, Black Night) Having a bit of a Deep Purple moment, especially Richie Blackmore's guitar. In Australia, our ACDC is called Acca Dacca by the fans.

For the person thinking about buying a bass, I own two Harley Bentons guitars and they are really fantastic guitars for the money. Much nicer than the cheap old Squier Strat that I first started on back in the day. Any beginner would be very happy with a Harley Benton and probably wouldn't feel the need to immediately replace it once you start getting more into playing.
