Everyone has mental health issues in some form or fashion whether it’s OCD or Bipolar. I for one appreciate the honesty. And I only discovered Justin this morning been sick in bed watching his videos and I subscribed. I started with his band. He turned me on in some strange way especially with the long hair. Then I got to know Justin with the short hair. Just as sexy. Maybe it’s the accent lol. Hello from the 🇺🇸 USA ❤ and yes he definitely has inspired me and I don’t have a lick of musical talent. We had a piano when I was a kid I use to teach myself how to play well one day I came home from school and my parents sold it. Sad day. I knew not to say anything because it was hard times with a family of seven. I often wondered where my life would have ended up if I actually got to play keyboards in a band. It was the 80s everyone wanted to be in a band. Lol

"It's how you manage it, really," and, "You try and find a way to function as more than a mere facsimile of a joyous individual." Justin, it is obvious you've done a whole lot of soul searching on this subject; those two statements are incredibly profound and brutally honest. You are helping many people deal with their demons by speaking plainly about it. Bravo, sir.

For those of us who have a similar wiring it’s a bit of a warm blanket, a great way to keep the monkey mind at bay by learning, laughing and being inspired, so thank you for that. Sir, your comment about realising you'll always suffer with this, and finding a way to function as more than a mere facsimile of a joyous individual resonated with me so much. I was diagnosed with depression 20 years ago, and it never goes away. Listening to and analyzing music (boring the t*ts off of my wife and kids) is my escape. I don't do a channel like you, because I don't have the confidence, nor the playing ability, but I do a little leap every time I'm watching one of your videos and you say almost exactly what I have just said. I live in a proper remote part of the UK, so don't get the chance to go to gigs, but one of my favourite memories was seeing The Darkness, at The Corn Exchange in Edinburgh in 2003 (you rode a white tiger over the crowd during the encore of Christmas Time (Don't let the bells end). Please keep up what you do. It tends to be my Sunday afternoon hobby of binging an entire week's worth of your videos. Thank you again

I relistened to Permission to Land today and was overcome with memories of being 8 years old practicing my falsetto and begging my parents for a guitar. 19 years later, after moving to Brighton to study songwriting at uni, touring as lead guitarist in a band, meeting my partner and having a baby; I came to the realisation that none of it would’ve happened if it wasn’t for Permission to Land and School of Rock having such an impact on me as a child. Do you ever stop and appreciate the butterfly effect and influence your music has had on a generation of musicians or do you prefer not to take on that heaviness by dwelling on it?

Know a LOT about what you spoke of here and how it applies to creativity (especially in art, music). I had all but stopped playing music so I could play a vodka bottle instead. Took about 6 months before I felt good about picking up the old battle axe again. But I did. When you quit drugs, it can take years to recover. The 1st week is hardest, and depression lingers for months. Relapsing becomes dangerous, and eventually fear helps you make the right decisions. Then you rediscover things that you enjoyed as a teenager, and you build a healthy routine. Then you don't want to risk ruining a good thing.

Music saved my life. I grew up playing piano and then started taking guitar lessons about 13. When I got to about 22 - 23 years old I was a functioning alcoholic. I was in a relationship that had died and was rotting but I was to messed up to face it. She was unwilling to face it either. After things finally ended, I felt alone and was tired. I was tired of drinking and my health was going down the drain. One night, I picked my guitar up instead of going to the liquor store and I played for hours. After I was done, I didn't have the urge to drink. I still drank next day because I went to the liquor store after work but I didn't drink as much. After a few months, I didn't want to drink or felt the pull to it when I was at home. I didn't feel alone because I was having a great time playing. I still got trashed when going out with my friends but it wasn't every night. I ended up in a band but I was really the only one who wasn't drinking during practice. Drugs got thrown in the mix so I quit. I got married then got divorced. I drank but it wasn't like it used to be. If I felt the urge to drink then I played my guitar or listened to music.

Hi Justin, I loved your first response to the comments today. Kudos to Chis for asking and kudos to you for answering so succinctly and honestly. I quit my journey of substance abuse in 2009 and you're a 100% correct that recovery in and of itself is a very, very long process and to not live in a fascimile of happiness also takes a long time to discover. I think personally, happiness plays the long game and you spend your entire life embracing what happiness is in what ever version it arrives, sometimes ecstatically, sometimes calmly and in a minutiae fleeting moment. I think the realisation for me is that the simplicity of dealing with life clearly and in real time is the greatest yet most banal happiness, if that even makes sense. I'm not saving happiness for a rainy day, just as I'm no longer waiting to deal with stuff later on, after the come down. I deal with everything as it happens and that includes little crappy things, big crappy things, awkward things, stupid, anger inducing things. That makes me happy. I love it. There is nothing to hide and that is grand...anyway, I loved that comment. Thank you.

The only thing more kick ass than your catsuits and your incredible talent is you talking about mental health/your recovery and sharing that openly, vulnerably, and honestly…. you are seriously touching people’s hearts and souls with that. Rock and roll, Justin Hawkins!!! Keep it up… good stuff. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻❤️

As a toddler in the 70s I’d watch this psychedelic kids show called Romper Room wherein the cheeky host/miss Molly would look into her magic mirror and do shout outs. JHRA strikes nostalgia and good humor every time

This comment might get me committed, but while we are on the topic of mental health, I'm going to say something about how my inner voice plays a role in how I'm feeling. One time, several years ago she blurted out to me "Everyone hates you" just as I stood up to address my peers at work. I've paid more attention to her since then, reducing her power and forcing her to adopt a kinder tone when speaking to me. So just the other day, I was having an off day and did not feel like working out when she unexpectedly said to me "It's okay, I know how you feel". That shocked me, I thanked her for her kindness and moved on about my day. Ok, I think I see people in white with something that looks like a straight jacket approaching. Love and light to you Justin, and to all.
