Today we're discussing the titans of the 90s - Oasis. The Gallagher Brothers. Why were they so successful? What was the big deal? What are some of their greatest songs...in my humble opinion and what did they contribute to rock culture? I've made a little playlist for you to listen to if you like - let me know in the comments what your favourite Oasis song is OR if you don't like them...why?

I'm ashamed to admit I jumped into Oasis only about 4-5 years ago. But when I dove in, it was absolutely non-stop. And my God, I quickly realized what I've been missing all these years. Truly an epic band. British rock is easily the greatest in the world.

Bro, same here! My journey began in 2015 and I'm almost 30, so I missed out a lot! Saw the Knebworth film last year and I felt the nostalgia for something I haven't even know piercing me. Thank God that Liam is still keeping the whole thing alive. Noel fell a bit into some Coldplay trance for me, so I'm not really listening to him.

Listen Up is an absolute gem of a B-side from the very earliest days and probably my favourite Oasis song. Liam’s vocals are epic. It’s a real deep cut. It’s also probably one of Noel’s best solos too!

Absolutely, Listen Up is the lost or hidden masterpiece. There are lots of great Oasis B-sides of course, but most people have heard The Masterplan, Half the World Away or Talk Tonight at some point. Listen Up, however, has slipped by most non-Oasis fans awareness and it really is as good as anything they've written. As someone pointed out, the guitar melodies are among their best but Listen Up is also really poignant lyrically. The "I don't mind being on my own" part is really moving. Again, as someone else said, the original b-side version is one of Liam's best vocals too. Since the mid-noughties Noel has been doing a beautiful acoustic version live.. Superb song.

I love Oasis and whilst not the most "technical" musicians, they do what's exactly on the tin: Rock and roll. I find it refreshing when a more technical guitarist (I don't know how else to put it) appreciates Oasis. In my anecdotal experience, it seems the opposite occurs. I think regardless of skill, it all boils down to the sound and melody and if our ears dig it. My normal retort to musical snobbery is thus: You go and write hit albums using basic chords that have been used millions of times before. Good luck with that. Keep up the great work Mr. H

I'm a musician, with decades of amateur playing experience. After I started playing guitar and then playing actual passing music for other people, exactly what you are saying here was etched into my being. If a critic turned up, I would offer them my guitar and ask them politely to play something for everyone. In thirty years, no one ever did! It's easy to say "love it" or "hate it", but for any hecklers out there, exactly how many hit records have you made? Good comment.

Yep. Not so easy. If it was, why isn’t everyone doing it? I enjoyed Oasis as a young man & im liking a lot of NGHFB stuff as an older guy, too. If I was to see a band live, I’d very probably choose theatre sized venues right away. I’m with Noel on there being a different & more intimate vibe there. Stadium venues are intimidating & you see the artists from 50 yards away on a big screen. Everyone waving their phones. Not for me in my 60s.

Growing up in the 90s me and my brothers and their friends were OBSESSED with Oasis. Obsessed. We would tape their videos and interviews on MTV, Tonight Shows, etc, often waiting hours and hours for anything Oasis, AND whenever we hear anyone say anything negative about them we would be so spiteful towards whoever it came from. We bought all of their singles, rarities, b-sides, magazines, and hung onto every word Noel Gallagher said. Oasis was and will always be near and dear to my heart. Btw I remember buying a magazine where Noel said something negative about the Darkness and Justin replying back with something like “Noel is just a bitter old man who has to fire shots on his way down” I was like WOW I love the Darkness and Justin replied to a member of my favorite band of all time! I totally agree about how awesome Oasis songs are to rock out to- and you don't need to be a world class player to do it. Great lyrics in a lot of cases too. I would say Rock N Roll Star, which is track 1 of their debut album is an excellent example. So fun to play, great lyrics, great vibe.

I was right there at the start but wasn't into them at all (I was a Radiohead fanatic in the mid 90's) but 6 years later in 2000 the song that got me into Oasis was, bizarrely, Alive, probably one of their most run of the mill songs, I immediately went through everything and have been a die hard ever since, my favourites are difficult to say as there's far too many to choose from but off the top of my head Slide Away, Headshrinker, Some Might Say and Rocking Chair

Musically it doesn’t get any simpler. But it doesn’t need to be complicated to be decent. And oasis made this very clear.they were the music of the 90s and early 00s. They had the swagger. The attitude and I think some of todays generation could learn a lot from them. As usual Justin your observations and things spot on. Great video this one.. top job

I believe Noel has told his inspiration from the Stand By Me chromatic bit came from All The Young Dudes, by Bowie. And it makes sense. And while it's correct to say they sound like AC/DC on the rawer tracks, because Marshalls and open chords sound like that, I guess his main influence for that sort of guitar playing came from The Jam (which was kind of the Oasis of Noel's generation - I wasn't there but I believe they were massive in britain back in the early 80s, right before the Smiths came along).

Oasis were probably the band that drew me away from being a 100% metalhead on leaving University in 1993. In the end though the band of that era that I still play a massive amount is The Charlatans. The Oasis memory that will stay with me will be the Knebworth gig where the queues for the beer tent were so long, pints were being re-sold at a profit part way down the line...

Nice to see you giving McCarroll some credit. I think he was perfect for the more punkish songs of definitely maybe, whereas Alan White was perfect for the slightly more nuanced songwriting of Morning Glory. Imagine Wonderwall or Don't Look Back In Anger without those ghost notes and triplet rolls. He's the brother of Steve White (Paul Weller , Style Council) who imo is one of the best drummers ever to come out of Britain. There's actually a gig or two where Alan is unwell and Steve fills in on drums for them and it's unreal.

@@cianciaway883 that's relative! when I look at noel galleghers lyrics on paper a lot of it doesn't make sense, whereas Damon Alburn has way more depth and meaning to his content, the Universal, Strange news from another Star, Death of a party, This is a low, these are just a few songs that lyrically are way deeper than anything Noel Gallagher ever wrote. They didn't write better songs, they wrote catchier songs that captured the spirit of the time, and they're great for getting everyone to jump around pissed while having a sing song, but if I wanna chill out and really get serious listening to something more layered and nuanced then it's Blurs songs all the way.

I feel absolutely blessed that I found Oasis at 14/15 years old. They were the 1st real band i liked. I was brought up listening to music, mainly pop acts i liked or listening to old songs my mum liked. Oasis were MY band, and regardless what anyone says, they changed this country. Thanks to Oasis i am a very passionate music fan and have quite a varied taste (and a half tidy knowledge - i consider myself decent at popmaster!) Seeing this video, i thought, "oh here we go, lets hear him try and slag Oasis off....the cheeky fucker!" but to my surprise, i really enjoyed it. The only criticism i have is that it was too short! I'd like to hear you do more videos like this with other bands/acts. Bravo JH
