I regret overlooking this band now. The 1975 have released a new song called “Part of the Band” and to my surprise it has blown me away. I was no expecting that nor was expecting to almost cry! What do you think? Are you a fan of them already? Do you like this song?

Honestly I think The 1975 is one of the best bands of the last decade. They've got some great pop songs, but also loads of more experimental stuff too, and they're fantastic live. A lot of people I know have them written off as a band just for teenage girls but I think they're genuinely fantastic artists.

I agree!! Few artists are able to reinvent themselves with every album and explore multiple genres while keeping their identity and sound and I think that’s something to be admired. They’re a very exciting group of musicians. Looking forward to this next album.

Yes! I second this. I really hope he tries them on for size. The INXS comparisons are apt....in many ways. But so is Talking Heads. Or 10 other bands I could list. The point is....Matty IS a genius songwriter and a really interesting human. And his band is one of the best there's ever been. They have LOTS of songs and albums and eras and vibes and moods etc etc. Start somewhere....and explore. Have fun. It might take you 6 months to get to that ONE song I'm convinced will change your life....but don't worry, it's waiting. They're that kind of band. Watching this....honestly was so fun. Just watching a very intelligent cool human who _gets_ music....realizing there's a band out there that he's totally missed the boat on. GET ON THE BOAT! We got room! :)

At the end of the Birthday Party he talks about his friends (the band) being the only thing that can keep him clean, and now in Part of the Band (^), the last line and the only one the whole chorus comes in for is a proclamation of how long he has been clean for. Truly tearjerking stuff from my now and always favorite band.

Adore this band. My ex-girlfriend got me into them and was just amazed by how great their hooks were and how much starpower their frontman had. I think the Love Me video hooked me. Very tongue-in-cheek but undeniably the guy is a star. Think it’s sexist bullshit people write them off cause teenage girls like them. Who cares? Loads of the greatest bands of all time were beloved by teenage girls, why do people assume the artistic tastes of teenage girls is inherently bad? Fact of the matter is the 1975 takes more creative risks than most other artists existing in the mainstream. I wouldn’t say it always pays off, but that fearlessness is what really makes all the difference.

Then before my mid 20s I tried to outgrow these bands that I loved as a teen (except 1D 😆). I feel bad because there was this feeling that I wrote them off coz I don't wanna be associated with those "young teen girls". But now at 28, I just love what I love! I don't care much anymore. What you've said is 100 percent on the mark. They are INCREDIBLE songwriters and musicians who've released a few pop tunes and got branded a pop act. Lift the lid a little bit and you realise how clever they are. This is also a point of contention they get written off as just a boy band pop act or an arrogant, annoying and pretentious act. Personally I think they're one of the most important acts to come out in the last 10 years. Absolute perfection on every album and if I were you I'd definitely dive into them a bit more.

Educated, interesting and not afraid to make music that they actually like, these boys don’t do singles, they create stories through albums. The fact they produce everything themselves just makes it even more credible. Would be interested to get your take on their 4th album ... the hardest one to like/get into.

Just saw them perform in Warsaw. Incredible. One of the best live bands these days. What surprised me, it's the music GenXers like me should really like, but most of the audience is in their mid-to-late teens (sometimes accompanied by parents - so sweet). But anyway, besides music, scenography, cinematic component (kudos to their video director) excellent sound not actuallly expected from the Torwar stadium. P.S. Live versions of songs are much more energetic than their album renditions, most of them danceable. In fact the entire stadium turned into a giant dancehall at some points.

The thing I like about them is there’s a lot of meaning and storytelling/scene setting in their lyrics hidden beneath very simple sounding songs, I think ‘Love it if we made it’, ‘The City’, ‘Somebody Else’, ‘Tootimetootimetootime’, ‘It’s Not Living’ are perfect examples Their songs when you just listen to them passively can sort of be taken the wrong way, like I can imagine some of their upbeat songs have probably been played at weddings and stuff with people not giving a second thought to how dark the lyrical message actually is

I think it's a gorgeous tune with string instrumentation, lovely melodies, sounds of folk and acoustic (different to most the 1975 songs) plus clever lyricism.

"The thing that put me off about this band in the first place is the smugness... but what I'm hearing here is real sincerity and beautiful and withdrawn". Got it in one. There is an element of smugness to their music, as well as everything about the band, but it exists to wrap around the sincerity. Lyrics about French poets in the first part of the song followed by a riff on beat poetry after the first chorus, numerous references to self gratification, funny voices, and an arrangement that makes the song sound more complicated than it is. All this surrounding a simple song showing sincerity and vulnerability about isolation in the rest of the lyrics. They're a band that get criticised for making broad pop music by some people and making fake deep inaccessible arty crap by others, and tend to play on everyone's opinions and expectations of them to the point of self parody, while still showing that beauty and sincerity that makes their songs special. If you get a chance listen to their new single 'Happiness' for your channel, as well as the album A Brief Enquiry Into Online Relationships for yourself. I think once the smugness is put into context as more than just self gratification it's a lot easier to appreciate the incredible song writing and artistic merits of the band.

Went from kind of hearing bits of the debut coming out of my sons room. To secretly becoming a fan and predicting what they would play on SNL and order they would play the songs. Now at 49 they are safely in my top 5 bands of all time and that’s a very exclusive club.

I dont ever pay attention to pop tbh, but 1975 caught my attention a while ago now and really enjoy a lot of their music and love how they have managed to not get pinned down into any genre really. I literally love how you are gushing, you are usually really balanced and appreciative of artists and quite humble, but here you reveal a slice of happiness :D thanks for sharing!

As a 48 year old male, music snob/critic, who has been to over 2,000 live shows, I’d love to share my opinion. I am the Founder/CEO of a medical company and fortunate to be able to travel to see all of my favorite bands. I am mostly in the Grateful Dead, the Black Crowes, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam….. but my favorite band has been the 1975 ever since 2013. From the moment I heard them, I was hooked. Matty is a genius. His lyrics are the greatest if you relate. He discusses topics that matter to his life…. Depression, addiction, love, friendship, and so much more. They never disappoint. I love all of their work and definitely appreciate the review. I am now following you. I heard Liam Gallagher commented…. I saw Oasis on the Tour Of Brotherly Love, w/ the Black Crowes and I’ll say first hand… if Gallagher comments, ppl should listen. Matty and Liam both share honest opinions of bands and they are usually spot on. Liam made some comments about George Michael , giving him praise, and I thought it was the most honest, cool and well deserved …..but mostly impressive that George made such an impression on him. As a deadhead, not many of my fellow phans listen or appreciate George, so I was excited to see Rock royalty (Liam) recognize George Michael for the genius he is. The 1975 are the most underrated but I’d like it to stay that way. I don’t want them getting more popular. I don’t need them going the corporate route like Pearl Jam did. Pearl Jam went from a great band to a U2 Green Day novelty act. Matty is the greatest front man out there. I love his honesty about shit bands like imagine dragons and maroon 5. He needs to keep making fun of these bands. It’s hilarious. h let me add, I love the fact that my two favorite front man, Matty and Chris Robinson love and read Jack Kerouac's work Ok thank you and thanks for the review. Glad I found you.

@@faeb347 It's nice but lonely. I travel around mostly with my daughter but now that is 15, she wants to hang with her friends more... I am a very picky person and just ignore ppl for the most part. I will probably always be alone, and it get's pretty dreary. Glad I am wealthy as it allows me to do what I want for the most part. This is the '75's worst record by far though.. I am not looking that forward to the Atlanta show next week. Kind of bummed actually. I hate the new look,.... to always have a damn tie on is just not me... he is getting all political which gets on my nerves. I do not need someone telling me how to think. Especially when I make more and contribute more. haha... Well, take care Fae. I hope you have a nice night.

We discovered your podcast a few days ago because you did the cover on this piece - KZbin stuff, you know, linked to what you watch most. The same way you were amazed to discover them - the same are we, going daily over at least one of your videos. Incredible content - so refreshing to see non-commercial 'music talks' and that we share many of your thoughts on so many things ... Somehow we were lucky enough to find The 1975 in 2013. The band is almost unknown in Romania - our country - to non-musicians and musicians both. I don't think anyone would be upset if we said they are playing pop - as honestly they are the only ones playing pop, the rest is only about commercial recycled chords. Our fellow jazz musicians complain about lack of complexity, but here's the thing. The way Matty and George come with new and original themes every, but literally every song on an album, year after year - is surreal. Playing complexity is easy, coming up with the new is difficult. Hi from Romania, we're a small music school, classical trained - hope to see you some day playing here

if you want to know where the name of the band came from, the frontman came across an old Jack Kerouac book once owned by someone suffering psychotic delusions, and he was struck but what the man had written around the poetry. at the back of the book was written the date “June 1, The 1975”.

I’m a huge fan of the 1975 as of recent. In my eyes they’re almost equal to Radiohead in terms of the way the experiment and have evolved with their music. It’s funny how you said the opening of Part of the Band sounds like the opening of a PlayStation- their earlier albums open up with their signature “The 1975” song and Matty has talked about how they created that song to open the album to sound like the opening of a PlayStation video game! BFIAFL’s take on their signature “The 1975” took on a different form in this album- but I thought your parallel here was pretty interesting! Loved the video!

I've literally never got The 1975 until now, despite having tried so many times. This new song is fantastic though, just incredible songwriting like our man Justin said. I'm not saying they're as good as the Beatles but that string arrangement and the completely different styles of each section really gives me that A Day In the Life vibe. Wonderful
