No one is talking about this nearly as much but it deserves a whole segment - CHRIS SHIFFLET is officially on backing vocal duties. Everyone is happy about a great capable drummer joining the Foos ranks but we have to give it to Shifty for covering the great voice of Taylor. Tough job, but happy he's up to the challenge.

@@cameronpritchett8300 You obviously don't know who Josh Freese is and you haven't heard him play in other bands. It's not for nothing that he's acknowledged as one of the greatest drummers of our time, who has been very busy as a session drummer and in a bunch of huge bands. I mean, are you listening to his drumming through your arse? No offense! Now, if he's a temporary solution, that remains to be seen. But that has nothing to do with his drumming ability, it has more to do with what he himself wants to do.

Watching the set they did in this video was like watching a renewed band. Of course I’ll always miss Taylor, but hearing this new energy, seeing the guys enjoy themselves just made me so happy. I completely believe this is what Taylor would have wanted. The man had a deep love for music and he’d never want it to stop because he’s no longer here. This was such a Foo’s way of introducing Josh. And I love their goofiness. They’ve always had fun and don’t care about others negativity. Plus Josh was good friends with Taylor as well as Dave so Dave knew he would fit. So I say rock on!

After seeing Rufus' emotional and spot-on performances at both tribute shows, I was convinced he was the guy for the job (and that's outside of him being an absolute ringer for Taylor). But I was also not OK with him not being in The Darkness anymore. I know you guys struggled to find the right drummer for a while there but Rufus seems to a perfect (and poetic) fit. Getting Freese works out perfectly, though. He was my second pick. Josh is an absolute monster talent and will bring an amazing energy to their live show (and studio work, if they should ever choose to use his services there). As a die hard Foo fan (hell I have the FF tattooed on my shoulder) I'm glad they went with Josh. He and Rufus were the two who fit in seamlessly during the tribute concerts. From a sentimental aspect, Rufus would have been great because of his personal connection to Taylor, but at the same time I have no doubt Dave was not going to "steal" him from The Darkness. Overall for me, Josh Freese is a great choice and based on the rest of that 1 hour jam session, I think the future is bright as the Foo Fighters continue on.

Josh Freese sounds fantastic but I loved the feeling Taylor brought to FF live. He was as likeable as Ringo. Josh will bring it musically but they have lost an important part of the band's live presence. An obvious comparison is The Who losing Keith Moon. Taylor Hawkins was one of the greatest showmen in Rock N' Roll, like few others today. He really is irreplaceable. I'm so glad they are continuing and can not wait to see them live again in Europe but Taylor will be missed by the audience perhaps much more than anyone realises. Unfortunately both Keith Moon and T are examples of key band members who passed much too soon due to drugs. Should the reminding members all give up their musical passions, livelihoods, and one in a million success due to a band member’s passing? So many bands have carried on after the drug related and also natural causes passings of a key band members: AIC, STP, RHCP, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Def Leppard, Slipknot, Avenged Sevenfold, and many more. Should the other band members all give up their hard fought livelihoods that feed their families and their own musical dreams because of their band members’ passing due to drug and alcohol abuse?

I was at the first show of that tour and Dave told us: "This is our first night playing an arena show as a band!...." That night, they did what VH did opening for Sabbath in England. The Chilli's had a, disappointingly, low energy set but the Foo's blew the roof off the joint and all 4 of us agreed they should have been closing the show instead of opening. I can't believe it's been as long as 24 years. Thanks to Dave for reminding me of that night! Any glowing memory from my past is so often hard to grasp, having to reach down and blindly fumble around in the muck, pull it to the surface and then cleaning it off before I can revel in it. Having me a melancholy smile right now. The first show I went to with my wife, other than when she came to my own - which wasn't quite the same because she was in the crowd and not at my side. It wasn't too much later that I lost her to a stretch of road on an early, October morning. Seems like I'm remembering some other guy's life. It really does feel like I'm borrowing someone else's experiences. I can still see and hear Dave and the lad's in my mind's eye - still hear Dave saying making that announcement and turning to my wife and lead guitarist in amazement and saying, "No way?!" Can't believe it's been so long since I've watched a Foos show in person. Good on ya's Foo guys. Have fun out there.

I also went to see the Foos and Chilis around that time. Columbus, OH, but Dave got sick and so the Foos didn't play. Just like you experienced, the RHCP were surprisingly low energy, just going through the motions. It was very unmemorable other than the Foos canceling (and some fans were irritated because they couldn't get their money back because it wasn't a double bill. RHCP were the headliners, not the Foo Fighters, and you don't get refunds if only the opening band cancels). I eventually saw it reported that Dave was out on the town the next night singing at a karaoke bar, which irritated me at the time. Though I guess it's pretty unreasonable that Dave would fake sickness 'to get out of work', lol. Years later he played with a broken leg, after all.

Of course Dave played drums on the new album. It is what he and the songs needed. It is the best way for Dave to honor Taylor and Virginia. Besides, who would be foolish enough to try to replace Taylor for this album?

The new Foo Fighters album is really impressive!! It hits very hard in a lot of ways-some true emotion in that album. But then again, that’s what has always made the Foo Fighters such a great band!!

Ultimately, yes (the guy is a rock grunge drummer, he is a rolex with his timing). But the fans will go through an adjustment period. Hawkins played drums by ear, muscle memory, and feel. Josh has chops and perfect timing, but not so much lose feel in a live performance. The adjustment is similar to the one PJ fans had to do when Dave was booted and Matt came in.

As you said: The better thing is Taylor Hawkins still being here. But in Taylor's absence,Josh Freese is the best call. He's friends with everyone in the band and can play anything, cause he played everything...

Obviously most importantly is that he's the Vandals' drummer. Spoke to him outside Newport TJs back in the day and he really is a very pleasant chap.

I'm a big fan of both - Josh was also in A Perfect Circle, which is arguably even more challenging music to play than NIN.

What’s been missed in this video is most of the references are directly from Josh’s weird sense of humor and his Instagram posts: PF Changs, Josh’s poodles etc. Also the shirts the other drummers are wearing…

Justin will be pleased to know that there was a Burger King pre roll ad that played before one of his videos recently in which a song was being sung, and in that song the words "dollars" and "offer" were used as a rhyming pair.

1:10 Has anyone ever done that? Your favorite band did, The RHCP were performing on SNL in 1992, the band was already drifting apart and Frusciante started playing Under the Bridge in an "unusual" way, prompting insults between him and Kiedis and during Stone Cold Bush ending with a very deliberate though astutely disguised kick from Kiedis to Frusciante. Not a full on brawl, but you can feel the energy.

I was convinced it was going to be Rufus, not that I wanted to see him leaving the darkness as I can confirm that Being right in front the stage at a Darkness gig in Manchester means Rufus will blow your face off! But, he is such a good drummer and did such an amazing job at the tribute gig, that I was convinced the Foo's would try and poach him.

Extra points to you for doing that in Boston by the way. My brother lives there and the thought of him having to walk around (or through) your crap is priceless!

If Justin mentioned every band Josh has played with, that would be a long video. GnR is bigger than NIN, and Justin didn’t mention that part of Josh’s resume. Plus, he’s done a lot of studio session work- too much to try to list.
