Despite being a motorcycle designed for people who don't ride motorcycles, the Honda PC800 was a motorcycle way ahead of its time. Its styling was futuristic for 30 years ago. It was comfortable, easy to ride, and super low maintenance to appeal to the casual commuter rather than the hardcore biker. It didn't sell very well, though, so this unusual motorcycle with a big butt is also rather rare. We'll take a look inside and out, as well as go for a ride.

I have owned my pacific coast for 25 years as of 2019. I use it mostly for commuting, 31 mile round-trip back roads in and out of Pittsburgh, five, or six days a week. I changed to a tall windshield the first year, I changed the too too soft stock seat for the best seat I ever had on any of my dozens of motorcycles. The Corbin 4 piece seat.. two seats sections, two back rests. I added springs to the pop-up trunk, so that it opens partially by itself when I pull the lever so I can do it one-handed. I changed the stock shock absorbers to IKON shocks which are KONI shocks, But made in Australia now instead of Europe, that’s why they changed the name by moving the I to the front instead of at the end of the word.I installed a K& N air filter into the standard airbox, not the individual air cleaners that make a lot of intake noise. I get gasoline about every 150 miles/48mpg mostly back roads some city driving. I’ve tried the Dunlop tires, I get about 4500 miles out of a set of tires I am very hard on tires, the front tire wears out much sooner than the rear because I am a heavy braker , I installed a set of Avon tires on the machine, and it looks like they are going to last much much longer than the Dunlops. I could not find many sets of tires that had the exact same size tires required,but I normally never do this but I had little choice, the rear tire is now 10 mm wider then the standard size. It clears the swingarm, And the width of the rim is within specification for the tire.it feels very sure footed ..Like I said I do not like deviating from the factory recommended sizes, but there are only two brands that make a set of tires for the Pacific coast, that is Metzler, and Dunlop. Avon makes the same size front tire has required, but like I said the rear tire was 10 mm wider, I like it ..constantly stopping and starting in the city scrubs the tires off faster than highway cruising. my pacific coast as of 2019 has 36,000 miles on it. i use motorcycle only oil not car oil. I never pressure washed the motorcycle ever. That ruins motorcycles. I am not a motorcycle washer, but I do use the Honda detailing spray on the bodywork which takes about five minutes to brighten the finish up. My motorcycle is black/1994/that Honda detailer prevents any scratching.,And as everyone knows, black is the color that shows every scratch even the very tiny spider web size scratches. That Honda detailer prevent scratching. I use it on the windshield, my face shield, and practically the entire motorcycle paint work & plastic...that stuff is a miracle. It also happens to be the single item that Honda sells the most of.They sell more of that detailer spray than any other part in their entire inventory. I have never had to do a mechanical repair on my Pacific coast. Nothing has broken or failed. I am on my second set of front brake.. pads..I change the brake fluid and the clutch fluid every year and thoroughly clean and lubricate the lever pivots. every two or three years I pull the rear gear set final drive housing off and pull the driveshaft out to lubricate the spines and check the U joint. I forgot to mention , I have installed real horns/Vox bell horns that came standard on Moto Guzzi motorcycles in the late 70s and early 80s. They can be heard over loud music in a car with the air conditioning on & the windows rolled up.. I am an exroad racer, and I tend to sprain the law when it comes to the speed limit, I never go over 80 miles an hour even on the interstate, but I generally I’m doing 45 or 50 in the 35 zones, like everyone else except for those idiot Prius drivers. I have had to contend with three different Prius drivers on my daily commute to work, and for some reason, they will not go over 34 miles an hour even in 45 mph zone’s where everybody else is doing 55. all three of them.....I never abuse the transmission on any motorcycle. I find the machine brakes in a straight line, adding a slight bend to the brake rod for the rear brake actuation, gives the rear brake a much better feel,and prevents lock up while braking over bumpy surfaces. This is an old trick I learned back in the 70s doing dirtbike set ups on motocross bikes.. rather than stepping on the rear brake pedal and having it stop dead/solid because the rod is straight, if you put a slight bend in it, it gives you just a little bit of feel rather than the feeling of stepping on a brick. The reason I have kept my Pacific coast so long in spite of owning many other motorcycles at the same time, I have a GL1800 gold wing, I have a Moto Guzzi Norge At the moment, I’ve had a few other bikes since I first got the Pacific coast, BMW, Yamaha Venture’s two of them, V Strom 1000, KLR 650, XV920 RH ,Yamaha 750 triple,guzzi V11 sport, i’m not even going to mention the trials and dirt bikes. I am just a motorcycle junkie. My point is, all the other machines come and go, but I’ve kept the Pacific coast. I can see that it is the most all-around useful/well thought out, neutral handling, genius designed trunk/saddlebags/great weather protection/no heat on the rider at all in hot weather, I mean none, and I have owned some roasters that poured heat on to the rider. Not the Pacific coast. It is the most useful, motorcycle in the entire history of the universe.. they need very little basic maintenance. Basically just changing the filters, the oil, tires and brakes, a battery about every five years. Like I said change that seat, you cannot sit on that seat for more than 100 miles. It is too soft and it will pinch if you do a 500 mile day which I have done.. change the windshield, put real horns on it, and find yourself a used Corbin seat, nothing breaks on them. They are not known for second gear failures like so many makes are, they’re not known for camshaft failures, not known for water pump failures, not known for such failures, they are practically perfect. I just wish they were fuel injected, I hate carburetors, although I have never had any problem with the Pacific coast carburetors. You never have to adjust the valves, they are self adjusting, you never have to adjust the timing chains, you don’t adjust the clutch because it’s a hydraulic clutch with a slave cylinder,., it’s got a shaft final drive which is a compromise, but they need very little looking after. it has a drum rear brake which I am thrilled with. My machine has the original brake shoes.. every time I put a new tire on, I clean and polish the rear wheel, I use emery cloth on the brake drum, I pulled the brake cam out of the backing plate and clean and greased it, and the brake shoes never wear out. I am not a rear brake rider, but a set of brake shoes instead of two tiny pucks for a rear disc are such an advantage, who needs a 250 horsepower rear brake. That’s how much horsepower a disc brake has..The Pacific coast, and most motorcycles don’t even need dual front discs, in fact, most motorcycles would benefit greatly by eliminating one of the front discs. A disk is not only extra unsprung weight, but it is also a gyroscope that slows down the handling when trying to turn left right quickly. Have you ever held a gyroscope in your hand and tried to move it, they do not like changing directions. They use them in rockets and missiles for stability when they blast off. A disk is also a fly wheel like the little toy cars we all had when we were kids, they don’t like to be accelerated, but once they are accelerated they want to keep spinning. To accelerate that fly wheel, that second fly wheel with double disc set ups, takes a lot of power. The front suspension Hass to be stiffened to control all that extra weight of the disk, the hardware, the caliper, the brake shoes, that means heavier springs to absorb the energy of impacts to slow down that mass when it hits a bump,Then it Hass to have a compromise of thicker oil or higher damping rate to control the heavier spring rate.. I won’t go into it anymore than that. You just don’t need that second disc. They don’t put two discs on each wheel of your car. Enough complaining. I wish they would re-introduce the Honda pacific coast. I would like it to have a 1200 cc V twin engine/Fuel injection/five-speed/drum rear brake, single disc in the front, pro link rear suspension with grease fittings, and a firmer seat.. The Pacific coast was originally designed by the designers that designed the Honda prelude. You can see the lines are similar. They had orders for management to design a motorcycle that would not offend people that do not like motorcycles.. so they hid the wheels, the engine, and the sound of a motorcycle.. they created a neutral handling motorcycle with the best trunk/saddlebag Inc. system I have ever seen on a motorcycle by any manufacturer..There’s practically nothing to maintain on the motorcycle. No chain final drive, No valves to adjust, no timing chain adjustment required, electronic ignition, they are as reliable as a sledgehammer. Nothing breaks. They will do 85 miles an hour on the interstate for hours without a hiccup.. I have carried full-size watermelons in the saddlebags, I have carried 2/30 packs of beer packed in ice in the saddlebags, there’s a drain plug in the bottom is for just such a chore to let ice water drain..If I had to cut down and just have one motorcycle. I would sell my Guzzi, I would sell my gold wing, and I would keep the Pacific coast, Which is exactly what I have been doing for 25 years now. I am on my second Pacific coast. My first one got totaled from behind by a texter while I was waiting my turn at a stop sign with me on it.. it was a very profitable nine month paid vacation. Update:: The Avon tires did not last any longer than the Mettlers or the Dunlops. In fact, I only got 4200 miles out of the rear tire, so I went back to the Dunlops specifically recommended by the owners manual for this machine.

I first saw one in the summer two years ago and proceeded to buy it a month later. After riding it the past two summers I am in love! Mine is a 96 model with the goldwing style closed front fender and selfcancelling turn signals. It rides SO SMOOTH and if you hit mild rain you don't get wet if you are doing +45mph! :D I am working on plans to make a light costumization of mine to make it into a two wheeled knight rider bike! :D

I owned a '98 PC800 from 1999 'til about 2003. It had 14 miles on it when I bought it, and I never had any problems with it at all. Gas, oil, and tires were it's only requirements. I always joked that the 'PC' stood for 'Plastic-Covered'. When I sold it, a guy from Georgia flew up to get it, and rode it back home. The crazy bastard still had one arm in a cast from recently totaling his own PC. ( Yeah, he really loved those bikes. ) Mine didn't have the top box, and to be honest, it's one of the only bikes I wish I still had. Oh, I had also heard that EMTs, police, and such were who they had in mind when they designed it. Anyway, glad to see a few of 'em still running around, even if their days are apparently numbered due to a lack of replacement parts.

@@knerdrider , the one I owned was bought new the year before by a fellow who developed health problems and never rode it. One of his relatives put 14 miles on it before I got it. ...then I road it like I stole it for the next few years, making my money back when I sold it. So I basically got a new bike for free, the way it all worked out. Deals like that only come around once a lifetime, I think. Btw... When I bought mine, it was the first and only one I had ever seen anywhere.

When this came out, we all (well, most of us anyway) thought it was "just" a giant scooter. 30 years before Honda, Vincent had tried to tap into the same market with the Black Prince and Black Knight models and, just like Honda, discovered that this market did not exist. It could be argued that Honda tried again with the CTX1300 and that met with even less success than the PC. They did the same with the Deauville model not sold in North America and that was a huge success.

There is one single thing you can point to that was the biggest reason why the Pacific coast became such a flop. They introduced it in white, making it look like an overgrown scooter they're actually quite a nice motorcycle. It could use to be a little bit firmer ride. But it was still a nice motorcycle. You could even adjust the idle from inside the trunk. It really was a good-looking motorcycle and it rode pretty nice. Even if it did write a little bit on the soft side

Hello, are there any companies that produce new replacement fairings? It must be a common problem for many models nowadays.
@knerdrider
@knerdrider 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it’s a common problem. I don’t know if any companies making replacement panels. Unfortunately it’s not a common enough bike to make it profitable. Some individuals are playing with 3D printing parts, but your best bet is to get on either the IPCRC email list and/or the Honda Pacific Coast PC800 Facebook group and ask around. Sometimes people part out bikes, and used panels seem to be the only way to go.

I assume from the recessed ignition key that you have one inch risers on the bars. The stock 95 I rode made me sit forward on the seat and reach forward to the bars and I wish there was a way to move them back some. That ignition switch mounted in the triple clamps apparently limits how high or how far they can be moved and still use the key in the switch. Anyone have a way to make the bars easier to reach for a 5' 6", 160 pound old dude?

Great review! Have you tried some gravel road touring on it? How did it perform? How does it handle bumps on curvy roads? All squirelly and bouncy on the verge of bottom out or stable, predictable and light enough on it's feet to dance between potholes, gravel and tar snakes?
@knerdrider
@knerdrider 2 жыл бұрын
At the time I had no dirt riding experience, and I didn’t dare try gravel roads on this bike. One drop could shatter the almost irreplaceable plastic body panels! It was fun on curvy roads. No sport bike, but with a lot of its weight down low it was surprisingly responsive.

@@knerdrider Haha Ok, I've just seen a few other videos on this bike. The amount of stuff that needs to be removed to work on basic stuff may be too much. They do show up for sale at VERY low prices around here from time to time. I guess it would be a great utility bike and touring bike with some smooth gravel thrown in but maybe not worth the effort comparing to other options.

$8,000 in 1998 is equivalent in purchasing power to about $15,419.63 today, an increase of $7,419.63 over 26 years. The dollar had an average inflation rate of 2.56% per year between 1998 and today, producing a cumulative price increase of 92.75%. This means that today's prices are 1.93 times as high as average prices since 1998, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics consumer price index. A dollar today only buys 51.882% of what it could buy back then. The inflation rate in 1998 was 1.56%. The current inflation rate compared to the end of last year is now 2.97%. If this number holds, $8,000 today will be equivalent in buying power to $8,237.71 next year.

Always wanted a touring bike after reading about Emilio Scotto and his goldwing world tour. But I'm quite short at 5'6", and around 160 lbs. Can anyone tell me if I will have issues with the weight of a PC? I hear they can be easy to tip at low speeds and stops if you can't really hang on when your feet hit pavement. And if anyone knows- 94 PC with under 20k and no mechanical/aesthetic issues for $3k? Seems fair.
@knerdrider
@knerdrider 4 жыл бұрын
WhatsBlackIsWhite At 6’ tall I could flat foot mine. Most of the weight is down low, like a Goldwing, so it’s easier to handle than it’s weight might make you think. There are ways to make bikes work better for shorter riders. www.rideapart.com/articles/254859/how-to-lower-any-motorcycle/ As for price, that seems in the ballpark. For reference: www.douglasvanbossuyt.com/honda-pacific-coast-pc800-motorcycle-buy-sell-registry/

Sure thing! The main issue I can see with the PC in particular is the seat is pretty wide. If you have trouble, you could consider trimming it down a bit narrower, which will let you get your feet further down.
