Since there are some so deeply affected by my de-saturated talking head, let me say this. I DO NOT care about a youtube talking head commentary video. 😂 I did not shoot in log, im in a little tiny room, and i didnt change the WB before i recorded. So i just de-saturated the image because i didnt want to record the whole thing again. It’s just KZbin guys. 😂😂

FX6 owner here and previous C200 owner. The C80 looks great and totally agree that it has a few benefits over the FX6 (which is now 4 years old). However, so tough to justify changing systems, mainly because of lenses. Given the choice, I'd probably take a C400 because I prefer the body style and more RAW codec options. Keen to see how you go with it!

c80 limited dynamic range makes it hard to capture high-contrast scenes without losing important details in the highlights or shadows. Additionally, the lack of internal RAW recording forces users to rely on external recorders, complicating workflows and increasing production costs. Furthermore, the camera's low-light performance is subpar, and its basic image stabilization struggles to deliver smooth footage, especially during handheld shooting.

My $0.02 is that transferring from SD cards at a maximum of 300 MB/s will get frustrating very quickly. Like VERY quickly. It baffles me whenever a potentially amazing piece of new gear sabotages itself from birth. CF Express type B should have been mandatory from an engineering perspective, although then there would be no excuse for not being able to do full frame slow motion in RAW. It would be too competitive with the C400, I guess...
@JustinPhillip
@JustinPhillip 7 күн бұрын
Yea it as all sad but true. I forgot to mention the SD card issue
@ericlippe
@ericlippe 7 күн бұрын
I mean at the peak of 300 (which I am not sure there are many cards that can sustain) 300MB/S is a Terabyte of data every 45 min-hour. It isn't fast but it isn't egregious either. For that you get 8 hours of video at 300Mb/s, so a full day's shoot can be backed up in about an hour. Plus for more mobile crews, you don't need to worry about dongles and adapters nearly as much, plus the price per GB is MUCH cheaper on SD cards than CF Express cards. And if none of that works for you, you can always record video through the SDI port.
@gregnewland2651
@gregnewland2651 7 күн бұрын
@ericlippe - Time is money man. I don't think it's a stretch to include at least ONE CF Express option (even type A) along side the SD cards. Even my A7IV has a CF Express type A slot. I've been on many shoots that require quick edit turnarounds in a couple of hours (event highlights and such) and, regardless of how many wranglers you have on hand, watching an SD card transfer for 45 mins is maddening. Of course there are other options like recorders and SDI feeds, but I don't want to jump through hoops to save valuable time in an age where having a high-speed option is commonplace. It's a massive oversight, plain and simple.
@ericlippe
@ericlippe 7 күн бұрын
@@gregnewland2651 That is true. Honestly I didn't think it was that much time when I first looked it up. Personally, I don't think mixed-media is the most professional solution, because it immediately means you can't read/write the same speed to both cards, meaning you can't usually record the same file to both places. At >2x the price (comparing UHS-II 1tb to CFX-A 1TB), I find that CF Express A just isn't worth it for lower-budget shoots, and I feel like higher budget shoots should be able to run an SDI recording option and use the SD cards as backup. I'm a professional as well, and while I get that time is money, an hour on set is not the same kind of work as letting your computer automatically back up its files for an hour. I personally shoot with a canon R6II instead of something like an R5 because I find mixed media to be a detriment more than a benefit. With photos, the 2x SD card slots are perfection, but even with video, I either use the SD ports or save it to a recorder if I need the fast turnaround. I'm not trying to defend Canon here- no company earns my advocacy without a paycheck first- but I think that some smaller production houses will see the 2 SD card slots as a benefit, not a reason to hesitate.

+1 on this point. Sure, it is worth upgrading gear IF you can benefit (increase profit, take on new projects you couldn't otherwise, etc.) from new features. However, many shooters never exhaust the capabilities of what they currently have, nor do they really utilize the upgrades new gear offers. We are easily convinced that better gear = better cinematographer. Just sayin'

I disagree. That will depend entirely on your business success really. There are people who don’t really need 6-10K cameras at the current state of their business, the more they grow, they will eventually. Cameras are just tools that can help you differentiate from your competitors. We invest in cameras that pay themselves in two o three months and stay in the studio making money for years. So if your business is in the need to upgrade, you need to know when. The when is important.

Remember, the FX6, FX3, and A7SIII all use the same sensor, so unless Sony has a new 6K or 8K sensor with the same if not better low light performance and 120P recording, I still think we are 1-2 years out from an update. In the low light ferris wheel shots, the Canon is completely blowing out the yellow lights, where the FX6 is showing them as a rich yellow. If the lights were really yellow to the eye, it's a big fail for the Canon. If they were really white, then the Canon got it right, but I have a feeling that the FX6 got the color right, at least in this comparison. But I completely agree about the Sony skin tones pushing magenta/red. But that's a relatively easy fix.

I think ARRI has the best color science or Kodak film. RED is better than Sony, but just reducing magenta a tad on Canon gets me to a good place quickly. RED used to always push green/yellow, just like old Sony's. I think they did this because there was so much IR pollution on their earlier cameras. RED's R3D (RAW) is a really "thick" image, their RAW is better than anything else you can afford. If you can color grade, RED is great.

Canon 'Color Science' is a giant gobble of myth created right here on KZbin by wedding photographers turned "KZbin professionals". No real DP even says that. Sony colors on FX series are pretty much the same as Venice (even though sensors, codecs, build and features vary) and Hollywood loves those Venice cameras and Canon is virtually non-existent. All we gotta know is Gareth Edwards is confident enough to use Sony FX3 for a $100M SciFi while we procarsinate and argue on KZbin. Its funny how Justin here wants you to think "Sony Colors" are "high con and heavy saturated" because he forgot or didn't know RED was known for such look too but only because the filmmakers who early on popularized it used it in such a way. Color is whatever we make it look like. With so many log and RAW codes these days on prosumer cameras, I don't even think about colors until post coz its such a non-factor. And funny enough Sony colors are demonstrably more neutral and Canon tends towards magenta more because someone at Canon thinks it is more pleasing, which is fine. But I'm fine with either "colors" and can easily make them look the way I like.

I'm just happy the C400 and the C80 exist. Four months ago, as a long time Canon user (I currently have C200 x 2 and a C300 MKII), I had written off Canon even still being in the cinema camera business anymore. I recently bought an FX6 specifically for one client who demanded I buy it to match their in house Sony cameras, and it's really cool for some things (the lower light performance and E VND are amazing as is the AF), but in many other ways, I hate it (build quality is so subpar compared to my Canons, no audio input on body, sub par LCD, bad colors, especially in skin tones, even with S-Cinetone). I'm not a fan of the C70 form factor, like you Justin, I've shot the C70 and the monitor hinge and chunky, bloated DSLR feel so the C80 I doubt I would like much more, but the C80 does add some cool new features. It'll be really interesting to see if the C80 and C400 can break the lock Sony FX cameras have on the freelancer camera market. When I get calls these days, they only ask for Sony, nobody has requested Canon in years. It'll be interesting to see Canon can claw back some market share from Sony in the low to mid level cine camera market. If you make documentaries or shoot event stuff, nobody will care if you shoot Canon but in the freelancer market, all I get asked for is FX9 and FX6 in LA.

Weird times for cameras these days. Hard to make a decision now if you’re a first time buyer. If I were to buy only one of the new Canon cameras, it would be the C400. If I could get both, it makes sense to have both. Two is one and one is none, and all that. For me, I don’t have any reason to switch from FX6 and FX3, especially knowing that I want an FX9 sized camera next, specifically for shouldering. Never really like building up my FX6 or FX3 for shoulder, so, a camera really designed for that sounds good to me. Plus I know that investment wise, the FX9 is what producers what for my market. They will not ever be going back to Canon, not unless they make a direct ergonomic and usability competitor to the FS7/FX9 somehow, but they just haven’t done that. The C400 isn’t it. I’m hoping to see the FX9II released sooner rather than later. I know this is taboo to say, but I like the look of Sony over Canon now too, because Canon is often oversaturated, giving the image a weird, mushy glow. Can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s just something weird, even though the skin tones are often better. And the Canon C400 demo film they made loooked like it was shot on a 5DII, then upresed with Topaz to me. I didn’t like it. PROAVTV put out some good demo footage though, so that made up for it. Usability wise, I just love the VND over old ND wheels. I have seen some C70 as B cam footage that paired great with the Alexa on a doc that made me almost want one, almost. Sony’s turn next!

But more importantly it was a smaller form factor, better for handheld and gimbals, had Dual Gain Output, and internal RAW. I'm still blown away by the picture quality with the C70 given how small the file sizes are compared to my R5. But I imagine 6K full-frame RAW will be a bit different. As for the slomo, that could be fixed via firmware down the line. I also wonder with the EF adapter, if there's going to be one without a speed booster now to use full frame.

Im a Canon/RED/(wish Arri) guy & I don't think the highlights are better on the C80 vs FX6. Even the shadows seem to roll off better to black on the FX6 imo. I am not in love with Sony color still, but I feel like the C400/C80 is more of a camera for live events. If Canon had given us a full frame DGO with fast readouts, that would have sealed it for me. Btw, I think your monitor might not be calibrated correctly, skin tones look quite off.

haha yeah, i forgot to change my WB. but yes, i do agree about the DGO, that was a hit & a miss i think, a sacrifice they clearly made to compete with Sony's lowlight performance. Maybe a C70 for cheap might be the best doc camera atm for the used market price.

@@JustinPhillip I think that people who aren’t experienced enough yet think they need a certain camera to get good results. Basically anything with 10-bit & log now with a professional can get incredible results. Newbies don’t know how to color grade well, so they rely on the out of camera colors or LUT’s they buy. The only thing that can’t be changed that easy, is if a camera has terrible rolloff. It can be masked with highlight compression etc, but it’s harder.

The more I shoot the more I realize that either I go big big (size) or go very small. I can't find a place for cameras like the C80 and even fx6. I'd take the fx9 instead. @@JustinPhillip Nikon Z8 has 12 Bit N- RAW 8K , 5K & 4K & Apple 12 Bit ProRes RAW 5K & 4K beyond DCI resolutions , And Z8 is generally considered to have more robust weather-sealing and build quality. , the Nikon Z8 is designed to withstand harsher conditions better than the Canon EOS R5 /Canon C5 or even new C80 For more extreme weather conditions, the Nikon Z8 might offer better protection. A pro vfx artist told me the files hold up almost as well as the Komodo X and imo Nikon’s color science is perfect. The Nikon Z8 at its 2nd native iso 4000 and pushed +1.7 is cleaner than an FX3 at 12800. Nikon’s Z lenses are designed for minimal focus breathing and do not need any post correction IMHO you should do a detailed review on it cause unfortunately it's way underrated camera which has the all capabilities of Cinema cameras .

In your experience can you get the Sony color science to match the canon or is there always a little bit that can’t be finagled just right? Also I heard the 10 stops of ND are much more useful than Sonys equivalent smaller range. And that while Sonys auto adjusting and transitioning NDs are very nice, if you have multiple cameras it poses quite a problem, leaving canons old fashioned stops, at the end of the day, more functional
@JustinPhillip
@JustinPhillip 4 күн бұрын
I think it would be tedious to match any cameras that are from a different manufacturer. In terms of cutting narrative footage from a wide to a CU. If the wide is done on a canon and the CU on a sony, its gonna be a little difficult, but imagine a medium shot on a canon and the CU on sony, very difficult to match IMO. And re: the NDs, yea i mean canons are the equivalent of real NDs in a matte box, but behind the lens, which is even better. But the auto variable ND in the FX6 is amazing for documentary auto exposure
