I think this video has an edge over Marty's lesson of La Grange. Thanks a bunch, Justin. Just because Marty gets lazy at times, doesn't mean you have to too! Props to you both for teaching me so much over the years
@robertkampman9320
@robertkampman9320 10 жыл бұрын
Marty is a different sort of instructor. His lessons are almost exclusively aimed beginners, so he simplifies things for that reason. Also, he seems to be a bit overly careful of violating music rights, so I think he tends to intentionally not play note for note for that reason. Marty and Justin are clearly the two big dogs in the youtube guitar lesson scene. I started out with Marty, and have moved more to Justin because his lessons are more challenging (and accurate) but I still check out Marty's new stuff because it's nice to just get the quick jist of a song I'd like to learn and put my own spin on...plus Marty is quite a character, and he cracks me up.

@Ashaliel

@@AllTheCoolNamesAreTaken84 I really like Carl Brown, but I also like the other two guys. Sometimes one of them will not really show something, and I'm like, wtf man, man, teach it like I'm a moron, so I'll hit up one of the other two. Carl just seems to be a heavier style, so I'll stick more with him, he does a lot more metal music that I like. Each has their merits though.

Awesome lesson and great advice, Justin. So many young guitarists rely on pedals these days, it's good to see a gentle reminder of how countless guitarists in the 60s and 70s managed to get such a variety of sounds out of their guitar and amp just by being dynamic with the guitar's volume - both by using the volume control and how hard you play the strings. I guess that's the start of developing proper "feel" as a guitarist.

i love the fact that you play the song as it should sound before you explain the fingering-too many guys talk to the point of frustrating the person trying to learn, thank you for the great lesson!

I started playing guitar when all I had to learn from was a crappy record player that you could play at half speed. So you could learn stuff an octave lower. It is however great ear training. But now, fantastic learning tools today with You Tube and Tab etc. Just unbelievable magic compared to when I was growing up. Thanks Justin for taking the time and effort to show how this classic piece is played.

Thanks once again, Justin. I found that it works pretty well just playing the bass part with my thumb (no pick), then I can mute the A chord just by lightly lifting my fingers up, rather than laying my fingers across the frets. To mute the open A string, I just touch it with my thumb.

I was a guest in Billy's home for a weekend at the end of the recording sessions for the Antenna album. He pulls out a butterscotch Esquire plugs in to a blue tube o/d, a delay pedal in to an early 50's Tweed Champ. He noodles around for a few minutes and rips of the intro to Tube Snake Boogie...., and then hands me the guitar. My mind went blank..., and has stayed that way. I always thought Tube Snake was in open tuning. Any way I was 2 feet from the fret board and I didn't pick up one friggin' note. The Pink Strat was in the room with us. I know this is a hard story to grasp..., but it happened.

Justin, you're just great! This is one of my favorite songs, I had tried to learn La Grange in a more complicated version printed in the german magazin "Guitar", had spend quite some time to learn it but wasn't able to play it sounding really nice. Your version is really simple to learn and fun to play, and that's what watters, just as you say: "If it sounds good it is good". ;-) Can't wait to receive my Rock Song Book and learn more songs!

I totally get what you mean, and don't despair! I play guitar in a band where the bass player is great, but a real slow learner. He struggles with practical demonstrations like "look at this.. now play it.". So my little advice is: Try learning stuff in smaller chunks. If you come across something that you can't play, divide it into pieces so small that there's no way you can miss it! Also, maybe sheet music or a tab can help you out with it too, hope I helped a fellow guitar player! :) cheers

A good point is to back off the guitar's volume to lesson the distortion slightly and then crank up to full for the solo. More distortion is not better. Getting just the right bit is the trick. Rick, it doesn't matter when he was born. I've been playing 46 years but still interested in learning and ideas.
