To this day, I still wonder how Elliott came up with such beautiful chord progressions. He had such a compelling grasp on harmony, probably from his Beatles influence 😄

He had a serious grasp on classical and baroque music. This is where alot of his melodies and harmonic concepts came from.

I've found guitar to be a great instrument to just sit down and grind out a song even if it's above your skill level. Used to try to do the same with piano but found it much harder and ended up injuring my hands

Hey Justin keep them comin these Eliott songs, this lesson definitely does the justice! You're right, this is intermediate stuff and the best way that works for me in terms of strumming is switching between you and original song for every little segment. Cheers!

Excellent song choice and flawless demonstration, Justin. I remember I started playing guitar 13 years ago, and the reason I wanted to learn guitar was because I wanted to be able to play Pink Bullets by The Shins. That was how I came across your channel and learned about you. I discovered Elliott Smith around 2009 and then listened to him ever since. I'm really glad you discovered him as well and started doing lessons of his songs. I tried to learn this tune once, but it was too complex. I think that Elliott Smith is honestly the greatest musician of our time, and there is no other musician out there who can produce such tremendously powerful and heartbreakingly beautiful music. Thanks for doing this song, you are absolutely the greatest guitar teacher out there. Happy Holidays!
@reflection11192 жыл бұрын
Please do more Elliot Smith. This was great! Thank you. If id discovered Elliott Smith when I first started playing 18 years ago I would have probably played far more consistently and be a better player today. I never really had a problem because of leaving But everything reminds me of her this evening So if I seem a little out of it, sorry But why should I lie? Everything reminds me of her The spin of the earth impaled a silhouette Of the sun on the steeple And I gotta hear the same sermon All the time now from you people: 'Why are you staring into outer space, crying? Just because you came across it, and lost it' Everything reminds me of her Everything reminds me of her Everything reminds me of her

@calvinkleinalvin2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, great tutorial, really helped me get it! After learning and playing back with the track I spotted a couple of little embellishments. In the second chorus, when it goes to the ‘D7’ you can insert a ‘C’ as a passing chord to take you to the ‘Fmag7’. And then from the ‘G’ you can insert a passing chord of ‘D’ with a ‘F#’ bass note (and open top string) on the way back down to the ‘Fmag7’. Elliott’s songs are always laced with little extra flourishes like that which make his songwriting so deep and special. Looking forward to more of your vids.

Awesome lesson. Advanced intermediate but would like more of these. I now have 3 or 4 new fill licks to use while jamming in C. Only suggestion would be to briefly mention the scale boxes that the licks are coming from. Helps us understand why it works. Thanks J!
