Listen. I had to stop watching this a couple of times....whew. So grateful for my Mom. This song is such a wonderful tribute to the angels on Earth who go by many different names, but are always Mama to us. Phillipe Wynne....from the Spinners was one of the BEST to EVER do it. They say that he was the KING of the ad-lib. I read that after awhile, they would just give him the last few minutes in the song, and let him just...soar. Even in this song - at one point he goes "let me run, let me go, let me go on"...but I think he was riffing for at LEAST a few minutes before that, just going off the dome. So grateful to my older siblings who put me on to the Spinners at an early age.....

Thank you JJ! It always brings tears to hear this song. It should also be noted JJ, that Philippe said "I love you grandma and momma," because I think so many people are raised by their grandparents...and so this would ring true! It really makes me so happy when a young man such as yourself, hear songs where writers wrote complete phrasing and lyrical content that met great expectations. JJ, you're so young that this song has been sampled at least 5 times off the top of my head and covered by several artists, including R Kelly...all well b4 you were born or really young. I love watching the spark go off in your head when you get the connections of those who came before you. You're wise enough to receive it and there will be no limits to your success! JK

Powerful! Spinners always brought it! Anyone with a mom or even faithful loving stepmom can relate. Ironically Phillipe’ Wynne, who sang lead on this song, & on other songs, would bring the gospel flavored ad libs & riffs near the end such as, That’s The Way Love Goes, or Could It Be I’m Fallin in Love, suffered a massive heart attack during a show, I believe in Oakland. He was only 43. Such an amazing talent & personal sound he had, like no other. I guess the closest to his voice may have been Rev. Al Green. It was like they could take the soul world to church, a trait associated with Sam Cooke. I guess most black artists music had that element. Another great hit they had that Phillipe sang lead on was, I’ll Be Around. Jeffery Osborne also recorded that one with smooth jazz group called, The Rippingtons. He’s still hittin, but his main airplay & video era was ‘80’s & ‘90’s, ‘On The Wings of Love, & Baby Stay With Me Tonight. Powerful voice & was also in awe Are The World, but wasn’t given a solo.

And my boy Philippe Wynne killing that lead take over as usual. He'll always be my favorite Spinner. Always hearing him reminds me of my brother that died at 39 years old. He was 18 when this song came out. Philippe was his favorite Spinner. And as a teen my brother use to sing and imitate Philippe.
