I am not a pro rehab, but I have cared for several opossums. As she gets older she will probably like to find her own spot somewhere adjacent to your home, if you decide not to keep her as a pet. She will probably come to you for munchies everyday. All my cats are very accepting of opossums. I think opossums are beautiful creatures and I learned a lot from them. Just stop holding her by the tail. Good luck!

1. Opossums are immune to rabies. It is VERY rare for them to get rabies. 2. You can’t release him into the wild now
@rorylapidus57724 жыл бұрын
Gnossienne Magika, by the very nature that they rarly get rabies, means that they are not immune to rabies. What happens is that their blood temperature is lower then mammals, and rabies generally needs a higher temperature to do it's thing. You are 100% correct in that they rarely get rabies, however it does happen so be aware. However opossums do have some actual immunity to snake venom, with a special protein in their blood. In fact opossums blood are now used in manufacturing antivenom. In the past antivenom was generally from horses. Fun facts you may not know: Opossums are the only naturally occurring marsupial in north America. Possums and Opossums are actually different animals with possums living in Australia not north America. Possums are more genetically linked to kangaroos then are opossums.

Holding an opossum by it's tail is pretty dangerous, especially one this young; they only use their tails as grips when they're in trees. It's the same as picking up a snake by it's tail; you can easily break their backs even though it seems like they use their tails often (which is false, as they use their cores). I'm glad you've sought help with a wildlife rehabber. If anyone ever finds a baby opossum, make sure to give them blankets or something similar to their mother's pouch (opossums are marsupials) to keep warm and safe. They're just babies living off of instinct. I can't hate this video because you're trying to do good, but a little bit of research and common sense goes a long way when meeting a wild animal and trying to provide care.

At first I started to get upset about a couple of things but the way you were handling her and the compassion and care that you showed on second day put me at ease and told me that you really care for her and not just treating her as a toy. For those who really want to care for a oppossums, but it's illegal to have one as a pet in your state, you can be trained and become a qualified caregiver of one that needs special care. But from what I've learned while researching them they need a lot of care and attention and you have to be willing to care for them most of your free time. They can be loving pets, a bit testy at times, but aren't we all and you'd have to be willing to do a lot of research on them beyond your actual training and be willing to spend a lot of time with them in the next few years.

Opossums DO NOT hang from their tails. Prehensile does not mean they hang from the tail; it means they grasp with the tail. Although you may not hurt it by picking it up that way, you could. The mother does not pick it up that way and neither do handlers. At that age, they spend a lot of time inside the pouch. To calm a baby opossum, it should be kept inside a bag. And it's better to comb the fleas off of it than bathe it. It's a testament to the hardiness of this animal that you didn't kill it. When a person finds a wild baby, the first thing that they should do is call wildlife experts to see what is best and if there are any rehab specialists in the area. They make lousy pets since they do not attach to humans well. Once she is eating well on her own and is about twice that weight, she can be let go. If she sticks around, you'll know she wants to stay.

They shouldn’t be bathed either because they feel more comfortable in their own musk and they stink really bad either way because they just smell really bad anyway. You should go out and find some worms for him or buy meal worms because bugs and insects are an important part of their diet. And do you even know if it’s a he or she. For bathing any animal with claws I suggest adding a rag or something for them to sink those daggers into other than your skin. 1. It makes them feel a little safer with sound footing, 2. you can wrap them in the rag almost like a cape which prevents the fleas for running to the face and ears to escape their DOOM. I had a Male Opossum that used to come over for dinner and the stray cats I feed would just watch him. He'd straight chill on the bench on My porch and nap out. For those that seek to have them as a pet they only live 2-4 years. What they lack in life span they breed A LOT. 13-20 babies at a time.

Do the right thing and show your audience what to properly do when they find a wild opossum orphan -keep it safe in a quiet environment - contact a local rehabber - turn them over for the best chance of survival You can even interview the rehabber! That would be shared way more than this video that may leave a bad taste in people’s mouth.. and you know how badly it goes for influencers deemed animal abusers.

I have rehabbed and aided many opossums over the years. They have stronger instincts than most are giving them credit for. The babies can be raised by humans and can thrive if they're allowed freedom which is what they thrive on. Caging them is only suitable for a short time, best if they can have the run of a house and get shown their toilet areas which they will faithfully use, much like a cat. They best go their own way at about three months of age, biggest predators they face is mostly owls before they reach full adulthood. After that, what usually kills them are infections and parasites and their natural deterioration to die by about two or so years, if they're fortunate. I've wintered over a few, had one as a pet due to a damaged tail, they all prospered and would show up for revisits on occasion but usually, their instincts to establish their looping territories takes over and they've gone their way as they're meant to do.

Thank you for being willing to touch and care for a wild animal. It takes a special person to care. I would check out that nasal drip. In my state, all wild animal needs a 10 days quarantine to ensure no rabies, fleas, ticks dealt with. Above all, stop over handling him. He needs high vitamins at first and plenty of liquids. The fleas are more harm than him. I relocate them out of town to woodsy area.catfood, not too much. Had one die of heart fatty.plenty of veggies.

I used to shoot these guys when I saw them in my garden. Then I found out they eat the ticks. My place is practically a possum sanctuary now. I think they are very cute. The very last one I shot was so sad. I shot it in the chest with a 22 and when I walked up to him he sat down, held one front arm against his chest, looked up at me and his eyes said, "et tu?" I put him out of his misery, but never again. These things simply fascinate me.

They're absolutely adorable, easy to tame and gentle at that age. The trouble comes when, as all babies, they grow to sexual maturity and no longer see you, its caregiver, as their desired companion. This innate instinct and the lack of satisfying it (unless they have a chance to breed) creates perpetual frustration for both sexes of this as well as other animals like raccoons in captivity. That said, opossums have so many offspring at a time (a dozen is not unusual) that when they crawl out of the pouch and begin to cling onto their mother's back, the weaker ones frequently fall off, can't keep up and get left behind. At that point, if not for human intervention, they succumb to predation or starvation. Unlike Christina suggests, their foraging ability is uniquely adapted to a huge variety of food sources: from chickens and kittens to pond scum and redwood burl. They won't like it as much as grapes and cherries (some of their favorite fruit), but most manage to survive in the wild after being hand-raised by humans. Releasing them far from roads will improve their odds. So, if you're genuinely looking to HELP an orphaned possum or any other wild animal, here's the takeaway. Drive it immediately to the nearest qualified wildlife rehabber. If, and only if that's not an option and you have all the time in the world to provide adequate care AND supervision then do the following: If it's too young to eat hard food, order species-appropriate formula from foxvalleynutrition.com with next-day-shipping. You may offer Pedialyte diluted 1:2 with lukewarm water for the first two feedings 3-4 hours apart. Then gradually introduce Esbilac (puppy milk substitute) over the next 24 hours. Feed with a dropper or syringe. Go to: opossumsocietyus.org for more instructions. Release into nature when it reaches a weight of 2 lbs. Try not to grow attached because it's not healthy for the wild animal or you!

It was orphaned, it would have died if it was left in the wild, at least its alive, wildlife experts will save animals and care for them to save their lives, even if it means the animal cant be released into the wild, just think of all the animal ambassadors that cant be released, it just has to be done sometimes. He maybe could have given it a fake mother possum, but that would be incredibly difficult, and frankly impossible. What he did was the best decision that could be made.

I am an Opossum rehabber and expert. This is not necessarily true. Many Opossums will wild up. It is up to the Opossum.
@kalliebarrett84204 жыл бұрын
Wrong. Baby opossums are very basic, and most find food by smell. They don't attach to humans like dogs or cats. They keep moving to find mates and food. They won't remember you or wonder why you left them in a suitable place to release them. If he keeps it for years, then it would be unethical to release it. But they need tons of calcium and movement to not become paralyzed and overweight in captivity.
@jessicas.62353 жыл бұрын
For anyone else bathing an animal with fleas, the amount of them crawling on his face is why you make a ring of soap around their neck before ever getting the animal wet. The fleas will run from water straight toward the head, so you have to block them. I made this mistake with my kitten, too!
