Hey Josh! Im studying to become an AI developer, will a macbook pro 14 with the base chip be able to handle all of the relevant workload. Also curious on what specs you recommend. Maybe even a m1 pro be enough? Im also taking a course on the side to become a data analyst. Could the m4 handle that type of workload as well? I eagerly want to start building AI models etc but only have a phone atm. There are so many options and people give different advice, you seem to know exactly what you are talking about so please help!

I almost bought a macbook air when they announced that they will sell the base with 16gig and they don't change the price. With this update the air feels like a great bang for the buck laptop. Luckily it was not available at release in my country so had time to rethink it and realized that most of the software that I may need in the future is not supported on mac. Like I'm an MEP engineer, I may enroll and online course in the future, thinking about going back to university for masters ect... So I guess my only choice is staying with windows.

I'm about to start my thesis and my 1tb + 16gb 6800U laptop is already completely full, and frankly I can't even make do with 16gb anymore (computer architecture student). So much software I have to download is >100gb, and I need multiple sub packages and libraries to make things work. I also want to use Cuda to try and accelerate CNN training, and I would like a Zen 5 or lunar lake laptop (Vivado and Quartus require x86 to execute and compile VHDL/Verilog into RTL), and at least 32gb of ram, pref 64gb, and in a 14 inch chasis. Unfortunately right now I don't think there is a single laptop that fits this need that isn't a bulky gaming laptop! The closest would be a PX13, however I really don't want to go smaller screen for coding. It's quite dissapointing! Hopefully the G14 gets refreshed at CES with the new processors as this is a real market - i.e. the graduate and above level STEM market - that is basically exclusively in the ball of Macbooks assuming your software can run on them!
@fooboomoo
@fooboomoo 23 сағат бұрын
problem with 64gb is that they are rare and super expensive. What I do when I buy a laptop I don't care about preinstalled ssd or ram. It's something I just upgrade right away and then find the best deal with the other features I want. So just make sure you can upgrade but that upgradability makes them a bit thicker than soldered or course. Otherwise just get a kitted out macbook as you said ;)
@thewok5859
@thewok5859 21 сағат бұрын
@@fooboomoo I would definitely prefer a macbook, or honestly a qualcomm laptop since they are so cheap and seem very premium (Surface Laptop + Lenovo Slim 7x), however unfortunately the software used to accelerate the design process for computer architecture is only on x86 platforms. A forum post was made on Xilinx AMD (The developers of Vivado, the most popular IC and Computer Arch design software), and the official response was the algorithm to turn high level VHDL/Verilog code into RTL (Register Transfer Language) requires binaries that can only run on the x86 instruction set (downsides of RISC vs CISC architectures). So unfortunately, my hands are tied in the very expensive hands of high end hardware that doesn't feel and sound like a microwave and that doesn't die after 2 hours of use away from the wall (i.e. non gamer laptops). Also I believe Lunar Lake and Zen 5 only have soldered ram, as the RAM is now baked onto the SOC as apart of the design. Same as meteor lake. If framework can't make it work that I have low hopes for any other manufacturer. Sadge 😥

Great video! Just a couple things I'd like to throw out there: * You can now run Linux (fedora 41 w/ KDE plasma) pretty much perfectly on the G16/P16. All games run beautifully, RGB is configurable, and you're looking at 8-10 hours of battery life on integrated graphics. * For Macs, I think there is a real downside now, which is that they are the least compatible of all laptops right now, even snapdragon. You really feel the limitation if you want to play games, but compared to Linux or Windows, you're just not going to be able to run everything you want. If you're used to the ecosystem and you just use one or two apps for work though, they are amazing.

I just bought a niche laptop, the Tuxedo Infinitybook 14... I don't have it yet... But it shows a lot of promise. For 1400 bucks I'm getting: a 16 : 10 1800p 120hz display with 100% sRGB, a Ryzen 7 8845HS, 32GB DDR5 RAM (upgradable), a 2TB NVMe (and an empty slot to add another one later), bespoke assembly, and options for my OS (I chose the "no OS" option). The chassis is a magnesium aluminum alloy, and I'm told that the keyboard and trackpad feel premium. Almost everything about this laptop was customizable. If all of this checks out, this has the potential to be a hard hitting laptop, and I can't wait to try it. I guess when I get it, I can report back my findings... I can compare it to the Yogabook 9i, the Surface Laptop Go 2, and the GPD Pocket 3

Love the review but I think one category is missing which is budget all-around Ultrabook, basically a Jack of All trades. Your light use category winners are having power efficient but very less powerful Luner Lake Processors or Snapdragon Processors with a lot of compatibility issues. What if I want a laptop for basic daily tasks like browsing, documentation etc. but also want to do programming, big code compilation, running some local databases and SQL queries and some occasional light gaming? For a student or trainee, they can't simply afford multiple laptops for different purposes like you do. IMO, there should have been inclusion of some Ryzen AI HX 365 or 370 based UltraBooks like Asus VivoBook S 14. That laptop, with 24GB ram and HX 365, 2.8K 120Hz OLED display and 1TB SSD is available around $1000 and it can serve a lot of purposes, the light task and the demanding tasks way better than Lunar lake, has high refresh rate and high resolution P3 Color gamut display, plenty of Ram an storage for the price and pretty decent battery life.

It seems like you guys have a strong preference for small laptops (13-14") while most people want medium laptops (15-16"). It could be a little much but dividing each category into small (13-14"), medium (15-16") and large (17+") would give everyone an option independent of size preference. For me a 17" laptop is perfectly portable and I'd rather have a large screen with me than a smaller bag - can't see the point at all as it doesn't decrease the stuff carried around 🤷‍♂

The 15-inch Surface Laptop 7 is definitely better for battery life than the 13-inch - I tried one for a while and it handled a real workload with plenty of battery life to spare. With that said, the sort who can buy a 15-inch laptop in that price class might need more app compatibility or performance.

Hi Josh, I’m so glad to see your best laptops of 2024 video. I enjoyed watching each section of the video. I love every single one of your videos, especially for programming. I am currently using the 2024 Legion 7i in glacier white as my main laptop for college, programming, and gaming. I have the 3.2K display, i9-14900HX, RTX 4070, and 32GB. I love the display and the text looks great while coding. I have not played games on it yet, so I’m not sure if mine will heat up. I’m planning on playing Black Myth Wukong after finishing up this year’s semester. And, I would like to ask you, Josh, how would you optimize a Windows laptop, especially a gaming laptop for coding and college work?

I feel like compatability issues need to be mentioned with macbooks like they are with the snapdragon laptops. I know it isnt quite as bad, but it is still a huge issue. Macbooks basically dont run any engineering software natively, and are unable to play most triple a games.

Why would anyone recommend the HP Aero 13 at a discounted rate of $599-669 (current price) over the brand new Asus Vivobook S14 at $649 which is its current price at Best Buy? Both rely on discounted rates to be worth the buy, but the latter is newer and at least on paper seems to offer significantly better value. I understand we don't know how long the S14 will stay at that price, but the Aero 13 is not at 599 most of the time either. The Vivobook has MUCH better battery life, better iGPU, Intel Core Ultra Gen 2 Copilot+ features, OLED screen with greater brightness and HDR support, better build quality, faster storage, better cam, better speakers, and better port selection. The Aero has better multicore, and a non glossy IPS panel, and is a bit lighter. But it's also less sturdy. Any explanation?

I personally like the Yoga Pro 9i. Just an FYI, please check the notes online about ghosting. It uses a Miniled panel and there is an ever so slight grey to grey ghost. It occurs on all laptops with that type of panel. I personally don't find it too bad BUT you will find that ghosting is better on the 2 Legions you mentioned. That being said the Yoga Pro 9i has a sharper display which is nicer for coding

@JustJoshTech
@JustJoshTech 20 сағат бұрын
Its still good and a winner from last year. This year it was replaced with a slightly thicker laptop "Legion 7i" i.e. without the "Slim" in the name. They put a CPU in it this year from a more powerful range that draws alot more power. Normally you'd find such a CPU in thicker gaming laptops like the "Legion Pro 7i". Because of this the Legion 7i gets very warm at all times. They should have put a Core Ultra 9 processor, which is the replacement from Intel's H series. That is the right processor for a laptop that size. Btw I have a review out on it, so just search the channel for "Just Josh Legion 7" if you are interested

Would have loved an honourable mention of the Ideapad Pro 5 14 or 16 with Ryzen 8845HS At least in Europe its the cheapest 32GB RAM Laptop with a almost current CPU and long battery life as well as high res screen. Costs 800€ for students (to compare to US prices detract 20% VAT so about 650$) Lunar Lake Aura costs 1350€ for students (60% more! than the ideapad; also ideapad has 50% better multicore but only 10% worse single core) ProArt P16 or P13 costs upwards of 2300€ Zephyrus G16 also 2300€ And yeah macbook pros well you know the prices So not really good laptops for CS students who need good CPU, 32GB ram, decen sreens but dont really have money for 2000€ machines

As to the Macbook Air M2, Josh suggested sticking to basic applications with the Macbook Air M2 with 8GB RAM and 256 GB storage. Well, I will definitely say, nah, I've been using mine for a year editing 4k videos on Adobe Premiere Pro, editing photos on Photoshop, and sometimes doing all at once with 4 to 6 other applications running (Word, Audition, Safari, World of Tanks, PowerPoint), the best part is that it's light, and has a decent battery life, so I can work on the go and still deliver my deadlines. So it is capable beyond the basic applications.
