It's the contrasts that mark out Opeth as a top band, even at this stage in their development. All the aspects work well - the clean vocals with lovely melody, growls with force and passion, fine acoustic picking and strong metallic contributions from the instrumentalists. Think of Opeth as a horror movie - great story made more exciting by the gruesomeness - a sort of Beauty and the Beast if you will.

I had the exact same experience with Opeth and their vocals. When I encountered them, I had a dislike of growls and would dismiss all music that featured them. With Opeth I enjoyed the music so much I kept listening, and eventually started appreciating the growls. It went from dislike to tolerance to liking. Opeth remains my favorite band, and they ended up serving as a gateway to extreme metal for me, which I feel additionally grateful for because there's so much good extreme metal out there.

LOVE “Still Life” I’ve always felt this album and “Blackwater Park” is the APEX of their career!! Phenomenal, phenomenal prog metal band. He also is the best growler agreed

I haven't listened to a lot of Opeth over the last few years simply because I listened to them SO much when I first got into them. Still one of my all time favourite bands though! They were a huge gateway band for me getting into extreme metal and Mikael's harsh vocals still stand up near the top of the heap even after hearing hundreds of others in that vein. One of my other favourite things about Opeth is their absolutely unique riffing style, just mind-blowing stuff! Anyone who loves Opeth should also check out Enslaved. They are the black metal equivalent to Opeth in the world of death metal (though I don't really consider them much of a death metal band tbh). I know you gave "Havenless" a listen a while back and liked it. Try out the song "Thoughts Like Hammers", or really any song from 2003 onward. Never been one to do this but I think I might actually start getting annoying about it by posting the suggestion pretty often 😂 Thanks JP, great analysis as always! 🤘🤘

He's articulate? And enunciates, yes. I can't relate to imaginary beasts like orcs or demons (except if they're written by Tolkien), but an animal? Yes, that I can relate to - including a kind of man-beast outcast that comes back "home" growling. OK, I'll buy the growling this time round. The pay-off for learning to accept some growling as part of the show is worth it in Opeth's case. Actually growling would go well with some kind of Grendell (and shriek growls from his big fanged Mommy) in a Beowulf song, too. The more musicians push the bounds, the more music becomes possible. Win win win, nê?

Light gives the dark substance. God? No, God! I am not afraid of damnation, only we humans determine our own station. Raising babies and beasts, I am comforted by the growls. It is the sweet pandering voices (in my head) that scare me! Peace & Love, (with a bit of barbwire!).

Did you catch the so-called "Ghost of Melinda" sigh in the quiet, acoustic part on the recording just before the growl comes in for the final time? Old Opeth is great. Up to and including Deliverance.

Hi Justin. Dave from Somewhere (But Not Here). It was my love of Porcupine Tree that got me listening to Opeth back in the day. I think this was the album that introduced Steven Wilson to the band, and he then produced Blackwater Park. I really like the acoustic passages and the heavy riffing but, sorry to disappoint, growl vocals have to be in very small doses for me. Ironically, when Opeth ditched the growls and moved more into prog, I have liked them less. P.S. my song ref Arriving Somewhere But Not Here is from Porcupine Tree's Deadwing album (Mikael Akerfeldt provides guitar and backing vocals on this track).

There are some interesting passages (the softer stuff) but also a lot of unnecessary heaviness (the growl vocals and everything else). As I'm not into metal, the only Opeth album I enjoy from start to finish is Damnation. No growl vocals, no heaviness, no accentuated prog tendencies. Just delicacy tinged with melancholy. The perfect album for me!

It's not 'unnecessary', it's what makes them them. A light/darkness contrast.

Yeah, this may've been better suited to a long song Sat sort of deal. As a stand alone I just found it bitty, up and downy, gruff, melodic, a little all over the place. And the growl, couldn't understand a word, which seeing the story/concept is key, could be rather problematical. Some interesting parts, but I don't think this'd hold my interest for long.

Yes, there's no denying your lack thereof. @@darkphoenix2 This type of metal is derivative and has always been boring since bands back in the 80's employed the cookie monster as their lead vocalist. It has a particular negative sheen to it and if that's all you've ever grown up listening to, no wonder you know nothing.

@@ZalMoxis Well, for the first 30 years of my life I listened to rock. All kinds of rock. Alternative, indie, garage, folk, blues...I got into metal only in the last few years, and found Opeth in 2020. So, I dunno...I think I have a good foundation of musical experience.
