I’m glad Ryan turned out to be such a great person, and you can see how much of a warm caring person he is But it is kind of sad that he might not realize his dad was abusive, and that his punishment stories are not like his other Asian friends This makes me realize that this guy has been through a lot of traumatic things in his past, from his ex gf getting into that accident and his dad being abusive. But he still came out on top with such a positive look at life Ryan you have made me a super fan 🙌🏽 Wish more people were like you

Omg, Bart reminded me about a time where my mother what to make a simple American fish sandwiches for lunch during a school break. But she African and not really great a reading English. She forgot bread and had to go to the store. She told all us to come down and I just remember it smelling weird. And so I asked or went into the kitchen and seeing it was blueberry bread she bought. She didn’t want to waste it and she already put sandwiches together. So one by one she made us all eat it sitting next to her watching us eat this fish and blueberry sandwich. I couldn’t eat fish or blueberry for years.

My father would pretty much beat me whenever he felt like it growing up. It might have started out as discipline but as time went on, it basically became a weekly event. If my father had a bad day at work, I would find out about the hard way. It started out with belts until I was about 9 or 10, then it was just closed fists. I definitely got knocked out a few times. By the time I was 15, I finally had enough and stood up to him. I’ll never forget, he was about to lay into me for forgetting to bring my gym clothes home from school to be washed. We were in my bedroom, he tells me to stand up and just as he was getting into my face, I looked him dead in his eyes and told him if he put another hand on me he better kill me, because if he didn’t he better not go to sleep. I think he saw the seriousness in my eyes. He walked out of my room and came back about an hour later to apologize, holding back tears in his eyes. It’s the first time and last time I ever saw emotion out of him. It was crazy. He never put hands on me again. However, the next time I got in trouble and I was being “disciplined”, my father decided to lock me in the basement for 3 days with half a loaf of bread and a solo cup to get water out of the sink. I was so confused on how a parent could lock their own child in the basement for 3 days straight. After that, I pretty much would beg to be hit again. Needless to say, we’re not homies. But I will say, as I got older, I made a conscious decision a long time ago that I would never have children, in fear that I would do the same thing to my kids. It sucks but I could never take that chance.

if there’s any way you can heal from it, I think having kids(when you are ready) would be the final step of overcoming your trauma. i think the complete rejection of the idea of having kids would be always be a reminder to you of that time in your life and your dad shouldn’t have that power and control over your future. it would be a final f*k you to your dad for being the parent he could never be when you build a loving family with your partner and know you have people who will love you unconditionally and one day take care of you. Putting that aside. For right now, if you’re really set on not having kids( then build a cat/dog/etc. family ahem), it may help if you think of the idea of having kids as a “one day, when I’m ready.” It would help expose the idea to be more focused on yourself and your future vs your past overshadowing the whole idea. build trust in yourself that you will never be what he was. not sure if this makes sense but i guess it’d be like mental exposure therapy?

I have a military dad. One time I stayed out past my curfew with friends so he woke me up at 4AM(just a couple hours after I got home), gave me a headlamp, and told me I had to pick every weed in the front and backyard. I wasn’t allowed to go to sleep until he came home from work that evening and made sure there were no weeds left. He assured this by calling me every hour and making sure I was awake while he was at work. If that ain’t discipline I don’t know what is lol

I'm the youngest of 7 so I got zero discipline, by the time I came along my parents were over it. My siblings had me all the time. I will say that my mother could ignore with the best of them though. That gutted me as a child. The stories my siblings tell of beatings they sounded borderline abusive. I would say however between my white friends and my black friends, my black friends definitely got it worse. Their parents would make me go out back and pick a switch out for my friend to get hit with. Pretty hard-core.
