Just wanted to add a quick PSA about the use of candles in this video. I am in no way advising anyone to light candles in the way I choose to in my video. Candles were lit strictly for my shots and were blown out after. If you do choose to have candles in your home opt for flameless candles (this is what I use day to day) and if you do choose to have real candles, Please use with caution, do not leave candles unattended at anytime and keep them away from anything flammable.

I agree on the Greek art and busts, but I have found that Egyptian statues and papyrus art also looks really DA! If the statues are too gaudy with bright paint, I paint them black or dark brown and do a wash of teal to make them look like aged bronze. Great list and video!

omg Im so glad you said that because I I actually have some Egyptian stuff but I didn't mention it because I didn't know if it "technically" was DA haha but i think it is. I love that aged wash idea too, thats a good idea!

I've been into Dark Academia all my life but didn't know there was a name for it. I have more than half of the things you showed here. I love the aesthetics of it. To me it captures the warm, rich ambiance of a well loved and eclectic place, a since of history and /or interesting, useful items if only just for display. I have always collected these type of things since I was a teen and that was about 48 years ago. My friends at that time thought I was weird, but I kept right on collecting and have never tired of the treasures I have. I'm so glad the younger generation has come to appreciate this look and way of living. It truly does enrich your life!

@Mpompadour, I think we have quite a bit in common! Styling my home in DA has required few changes as that's the kind of items I've enjoyed collecting for years. Not many understood my teenage room either, but I still have many of those treasures, such as Grandma's oil lamp, Dad's college typewriter and many beloved books, that fit into my DA farmhouse perfectly. @justlanchen, thanks for the ideas! My favorite new part of DA styling is the color palette. Deeper, more atmospheric colors, jewel tones, bronze, aged brass and old gold all create such a beautiful look. I really love your posts about DA.

I actually sew and I am obsessed with historical fashion (which is why I'm into DA), and I found that some of the "decor" in my space are actually vintage-looking sewing utensils, like vintage pins, fabric shears, vintage patterns, old photographs and vintage fashion pamphletes, and the awesome thing is that they are ALL functional to me! I also collect vintage jewelries to go with my vintage-ish style, so it's totally on brand. So maybe add on tip: if you're interested in something (sewing, drawing, writing, even stuff like collecting insects, rocks, and cooking! etc) try to find utensils that you need in vintage. Vintage scissors, vintage plates and glass, vintage vases for brushes, etc. Could be antique, could be vintage inspired. It adds to the vibe as well as being super functional! On the other hand, it adds even more personality to your room because it's filled with things you're interested in! Thank you for the video, i'll definitely add some to my decor wishlist!

Yes! No one else has ever mentioned this! I came to the same conclusion. I love to sew, love historical fashion, and thus I collect (and use) vintage sewing notions. Ooh, also displaying stacks or baskets full of vintage textiles is good. I have vintage lace in old jars as well, and of course my 1950s sewing machine has its own little table in the corner for show while I gather up the courage to use it.

i love this aesthetic so much. i've had the DA aesthetic for three years now and what i love about it (in terms of decor) is that it is quite affordable. my vintage suitcases, candle holders, brass objects, frames, book ends, my greek statue bust, and literally 98% of my books were all thrifted. in fact, i got a victorian style desk for 50 dollars at my local goodwill. it took time for me to collect all those items, you just have to have patience!!

Our house has a proper grandfather clock that I think was originally from a great great grandfather who owned a public house, the base was removed to fit into a smaller terraced house of a great uncle and the glass has a crack in it from when one of those houses on the terrace was demolished and the vibrations cracked the glass. It'd be so neat to get it restored, a proper heavy tick tock from a 1800's grandfather clock perfectly fits the DA aesthetic.

I'm lucky enough to have a room that is my library. Two desks, a couple of chairs and small tables, shelves and drawers and a "curiosity cabinet". All the other rooms I decorate in pseudo African and elephant themes for my wife. The library is mine. Books, gargoyles, candles, sections dedicated to minerals and fossils, statuettes of Medusa, Nike, Athena, Raven, Anubis and Bast. Green hood library lamps, and even a display dish and cup of actual uranium glass. The entire works of HPL and several works of Doyle, not to mention ....yeah it's a library, so a lot of books. It's my haven. Some guys have "man caves". I have a library and it is my sanctuary after a long day at work. Thank you for all your ideas and inspirations, I'm sure I'll be incorporating many of them in the future.

I do have an old unworking camera that I bought because it was like the one my parents had back in the 40s and 50s. Just purchased from the Etsy shop some of the postcards to frame. Always wanted a vintage typewriter (being a secretary for 35 years), but can't afford it, so thanks for the idea of the blueprint art. Found one for a typewriter from 1938 that I can frame. I have a candle snuffer from the old Partylite candle party days. I have a lantern. Guess I should shop my home before I do more purchasing.

Some interesting ideas. Thank you for sharing them. I’m not always sure where the Dark Academia comes into play on some things watching a number of KZbin videos. A lot of your suggestions my wife and I have accumulated over many years. I’ve always called it more a Museum of Natural History or Indiana Jones office look. I would suggest quality of an object over just the object. Only use objects that look substantial (of a higher quality) over something that might be found at a Spencer’s Gifts or discount store. If a quality version of something one wants can’t be found or isn’t in one’s budget, then don’t get something less. Wait. It will look better, last longer and one will be happier. Some other ideas to consider: A scarf with a pattern over a lampshade. Animal bones, especially skulls. Many a deer skull has been found in the woods along with various others. We have an alligator skull from New Orleans (do not bleach bones. It weakens them) Bird feathers. Note that there are laws against owning certain bird feathers. I think under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Bird’s nest also may be covered. Just be aware. Glass lab equipment (One can find interesting things like this at American Science and Surplus) Souvenir little metal buildings Old coins Old stamps An alternative to just putting book pages on a wall, is to put up a bulletin board and then pin them to that. The bulletin board can also have ribbon crisscrossed on it and things can be tucked in. A library card catalog. Storage nooks and crannies in general. Metal, wire baskets (Target) Metal, enameled vanity storage tray (Hearth and Hand Magnolia Target) Serving trays Ouija board Pocket watching hung from a crescent stand Beeswax candles (can make one’s own from kits like found on Townsend’s website.) Vintage photographs Vintage rotary phones (not the cheap reproductions, but old solid ones) Crystal bar glassware (on serving trays) Radio vacuum tubes (Also American Science and Surplus) Vintage/vintage style hats (Historical Emporium website. Village Hat Shop website) Some places to search for these things are at flea markets, antique malls, and architectural salvage yards. Anyway, hope this sparks some ideas. Quality over quantity.
@justlanchen2 жыл бұрын
omg these are marvelous ideas, I just pinned it so everyone can see! thank you for sharing! Also, before DA was popular I always referred to my style as adventure / swiss family robinson tree house. So happy to hear I'm not the only one who thinks this aesthetic is similar to that. I do hope that some day in the future "adventurecore" become a thing, it would be so cool to see but in the meantime dark academia works too!!

@@justlanchen Hope it helps people with their designs. Explorer Core is another label I use. I keep a running list of clothing and other items I have in my kit to keep track of those things. And other list. I’m a huge list maker. A pain to start, but once created, easy to maintain and useful. Thought of a few of other items: Doctor’s bag Mortar and pestle Army Surplus canvas bags Various kinds of apothecary bottles, and just bottles that take corks As mentioned previously, American Science and Surplus is a great place to get the lab ware, mortar and pestle, bottles, some military surplus, …. But it can be a rabbit hole. They also have many things that I would consider to be low quality, so be choosy.

Great ideas. You've made me want to actually convert my room instead of just thinking about it. I love the trifold out mirrors. Can't find them anywhere for less than a fortune. I can find smaller ones, but in my mind DA is oversized, from the idea of antiquarian days. I love the ornate hand mirrors as well, looking for that one and a magnifying glass. For those who don't want real bugs up on their walls in a collection, saw one DIY who actually printed out HD images of butterflies, cut them out and pinned those in a shadowbox. I have framed maps and diagrams from Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit and Percy Jackson, all printed out on darkened paper.

I have been transitioning my tiny home to a dark academia/light academia blend.... All with thrifted & second hand items. My furniture (2 high backed cream armchairs and a beige loveseat) were bought off Facebook. I use a vintage black trunk with gold details for a coffee table (and extra storage). I have a vintage sewing machine table (machine is still in it & works!) with matching stool as a work space. I have a thrifted electric fireplace, thrifted crochet throws, lots of old books, candles and plants spread around the room. Yesterday I was at a garage sale and came home with a "tempest fugit" chime wall clock, vintage tatting pieces, a large woven floor basket, a vintage round folding travel alarm (1960's), a gold filigree book holder and a few smaller pieces (including several hardbacked books from the 1920's & 30's) - all for $30! 💗 I crocheted a few floor rugs out of old sheets. I have 2 vintage art pieces I thrifted last year and the most amazing lamp I found someone throwing away!! Other items in my space that I've had for years.... 1920's radio (works), set of oil lamps, vintage tea service and several vintage stringed instruments. The space is really coming together....it just took time & patience (but not a lot of money).

Quick FYI (from a vintage seller): a *candlestick* is actually a holder for a candle; a tall, thin candle is a taper candle. Confusing, right?! What colour should I paint my wall? Not gonna do black, yellow, orange, purple, or pink. One wall is bright red now, and the others and my ceiling are white. And say I'd do blue for example, or green, what colour code? Thanks Also, how to fit all of these things in a very small room? I have a book closet but it's already filled, I already have a second row of books in front of the first one!
@justlanchen3 жыл бұрын
Are you covering the red wall or keeping it? A color I personally like called “Mouse Is Back” has a great moody tone for this type of space. If you didn’t want to go that dark though you could always do a beige or if you want to get even more create with it you could find a wallpaper or a piece of cloth with a vintage pattern. I just found a king size bed sheet that was super old and vintage and I’m going to be pinning it up by the corners of my room. Great way to change a wall without damage and too much effort and if you don’t like if you could remove it. If you check out my Dark academia room makeover video maybe it’ll help you get a sense of how I fit everything into my space, my room is very small too. If you want all the trinkets and things you’ll definitely need a desk to display/use them and more shelves throughout your room.

Hope that helped!!

@@justlanchen I'm covering the red wall, just looked up the colour you were talking about and it looks cool! Might do all of my walls that colour, and the one accent wall (the now red one) a bit darker! OMG thank you so much! And yes shelves haha but the only place I have is over my bed and my parents won't allow me to put them there since they might fall on me whilst I'm sleeping. F hahaha but thanks so much!!! I love the colour and all of the items in this vid!
@justlanchen3 жыл бұрын
@@noahapollo an accent wall would be really cool, that’s exactly what I’m planning on doing too! I totally understand the shelves over the bed, I used to have one and it really freaked me out!! You could always do the DIY portrait wall like the one in my DA bedroom makeover video too if you didn’t want to do the wallpaper. That technically is like an accent wall and you are displaying lots of DA things🥰
@noahapollo3 жыл бұрын
@@justlanchen I had a convo with my parents yesterday, if I repaint my room I can make my accent wall mouse's back and the rest a bit lighter! And I'd love to do that but nothing sticks to the paint. But the new colours will be awesome!

May I suggest the glass cloche/bell jar as an additional item that will also provide dust free storage? I keep my mother and grandmother’s Birthday Books in a cheese bell, and a wooden object that belonged to my grandfather in a large cloche.

Excellent ideas. I especially like the idea of the blueprint art. I see blueprints in old books headed for the trash. A great way to salvage those prints and frame them for Dark Academia. PS. I'm sure you've been told this before, but you look like the actress, Wynona Ryder.

A couple of thoughts: Typewriters -- The problem with having a "usable" typewriter is finding ribbons for one. That is the reason I got rid of my typewriter (an ancient LC Smith & Corona upright with no "1" key -- I had to use the lower case "l"). Had I held onto it, it would have been very D.A. What about sea shells? In the right parts of a sea shore, they are available free for the effort of collecting. (There used to be a lot more places you could collect sea shells, but the good places for collecting have been thinned out.) But many souvenir shops at the beach offer selections of shells, usually priced up to a couple dollars per shell. A last thought: pencil boxes. All the ones I've found are definitely not dark academic (one I have is a Lego pencil box), but it's an item to look for when thrifting...

i'm so happy with my antiques, i proudly posses a 19th century clock that used to actually work when i got it for 25 bucks, i have a typewriter, some copper candle holders, vintage medication bottles, a collection of some fine european beer bottles, and early 20th century pictures. oh and i also have a home altar, mostly filled with antique religious items, and i also have some random knicknacks filled with mystery laying around. some ppl call me a hoarder but i'd rather call it a cabinet of curiosities yay

I think you were thinking of sealing wax and oil lamps. Also, when you said Piano lamp I suddenly realized my upright piano was probably a Dark Academia item I hadn't even thought of. And then I realized other instruments like violins, harps, and brass bells were a good fit as well. The clock reminded me that I also have a metronome and the stopwatch reminded me of pocket watches.
