Oh, so THAT'S what that aesthetic is called! There was a magazine, maybe Seventeen, that had a spread about it in maybe '96 and this informed part of my ideal decor.

Be careful of your crystal balls. Sunlight can be concentrated by them and start a fire, just as you can do with a magnifying glass. This is one reason they traditionally have a cloth draped over them.

Smashing Pumpkins “Meloncholy and the Infinite Sadness” album art is THE definition of Whimsygoth✨🖤✨🌞🌚 in my opinion. I have loved it since the album came out in the 90’s and have contemplated creating a mural with the same vibe or framing the art. Check it out if you’re not familiar!

Back when I was full on goth (early to mid '90s) I'd never heard of whimsigoth. Of course, back then I didn't have access to subculture information like we have now. I absolutely LOVE this aesthetic! Bohemian plus goth is definitely a perfect combination. And of course, you've now given me even MORE ideas for my Ravenclaw themed library. Thank you very much, justlanchen :) BTW If anyone "comes at you" for your pronunciation of "Curtain" with the glottal stop instead of the T sound, tell 'em to shut up and go away. One of my friends from the east coast used to pronounce it that way. Your pronunciation caught my attention because I hadn't heard that specific glottal stop with that word in years.

Little advice on crystals; research if they can sit in the sun! Amethyst and quartz for example fades out in the sun, and some crystals can crack when to long in the sun. I love this aesthetic for decor, it reminds me of a storybook come to life (and I love stars and the moon so much as little details in things). When I was a teen I painted my ceiling a dark blue with little gold dots for stars and used my ceiling lamp as the moon, and looking back it this fits this aesthetic a lot. My own project at the moment is making new pillowcases for the pillows on my couch to fit the vibe of the room better (I guess whimsigoth meets green academia? I'm thinking of using a dark olive green corduroy for these, the pillowcases I had are bright red and clash so much with the rest of my room). Thanks for the decor ideas! There are definitely a few of them I'm gonna buy or make.

I never heard of whimsigoth back in the 80s and 90s. It does remind me of something called perky goth, though there seem to be plenty of differences. Of course, back the people were were creating new versions of goth almost as fast as they're cranking out aesthetics.

Right/ I was a teen in the 80s and 20s in the 90s and never heard this term. But it was basically the aesthetic I had. I was a goth before it was called goth - more “New Romantic” really. I was soooo into the early Duran Duran look, Adam Ant, Siouxsie Sioux, and yes, Stevie Nicks!

This is a winter video idea rather than an autumn one, but I'd really appreciate a series of tips of decorating for the holidays within an aesthetic. For example, whimsigoth + Hanukkah or Diwali = easy mode (and beautiful!). But whimsigoth + Christmas isn't so clear to me how one would keep it visually cohesive/pleasing but still look festive. So holiday decor tips for different aesthetics, basically, is my video idea, haha.

Where to go musically with this ? Certainly Gustav Holst’s Planets suite. Having said that King Crimson’s Wake of Poseidon is hardly a stretch. Camel’s Moonmadness is a really great album. That leads into the whimsy of the Canterbury Scene. Caravan’s In the Land of the Grey and Pink and Gong’s Radio Gnome Invisible trilogy are good places to start. For more recent stuff try Rosalie Cunningham’s solo albums; more of a heavy psych, T Rex inspired sound.

I'd love to give this idea a hundred likes! Everyone has different tastes and everyone has different ideas regarding what any given aesthetic should "sound" like, so let's get this list rolling! My ideas (YMMV)- Mazzy Star- Fade into you The Cranberries- Linger. Enya- Everything (not a song, just literally everything by the one who sings in Elvish) Stevie Nicks- Take your pick of pretty much anything. The Lighthouse (it's rather heavy, but so is a lot of Goth music). There's obviously FAR more, that's just one of my favorites. Rhiannon is a HUGELY obvious song. The Cure- A forest Inkubus Sukkubus- Wytches Chant '98. Obviously more pagan and witchy but it really transports me in a dark way that floats on the wings of the fae. Light some candles, shut my eyes and listen to the floating feel, the rise and fall of this song. Oops, sorry, carrying on too much, lol Enigma- The Rivers of Belief. The Voice of Enigma. I love nearly everything Enigma has produced, but not everything is compatible with this aesthetic. Erutan- Come Little Children, Sarah's Theme. Hocus Pocus was mentioned, and this song is the definition of whimsical darkness. Seriously, I LOVE the idea of an entire thread dedicated to a whimsigoth ideas for music!

I didn't know Whimsigoth was a thing, but I'm LOVING literally everything you mention (except for the skulls), and already have a lot of them, have had them in the past, or have wanted to buy them for a long time. That being said, I'm not into dark walls or ceilings. I love Victorians, with lots of sunlight coming in the windows, and light colors on the walls, brightly painted on the outside, too. I do like some medieval gothic elements in decor, though. I don't know what that makes my style.. I've seen black, dark Victorians. I do appreciate them, but think they might be depressing to live in for a long time. I've got some kind of sun catcher in every window, and I still want more.

I recently purchased a home and this is sort of my vibe. I've used a few different terms including dark academia, gothic, victorian, modern vampire, etc. Most recently I've settled on "Great Gatsby meets Addams Family." In any event, what should I look for in an interior decorator to help make it happen? It's about 4,000 sqft of space I want to decorate. I have ideas, but I'm busy with work and struggle to visualize the steps needed to get to the end result - I need a captain for this ship!

I love these decor ideas you’ve been covering. I love cottage or, dark 😊cottage core, dark academia, light academia, and also whimsigoth (although I wasn’t really sure what that was until now!) I don’t live in a cottage per se, but my house is very ‘cottage-y” but small with not a lot of light, so I’ve always leaned towards a lighter, more colorful, very bohemian aesthetic. But this time of year always makes me want to go a bit darker. I have been wanting to make over my home office in particular, which used to be the kids room and still kinda looks it. I soooo want to do something more dark academia or whimsigoth but I’m afraid it would kill the little bit of light that I have! Any suggestions?

Can you do a research vid on a specific style that I don't know the name of but it usually incorporates trunks/chests, canvas, leather, buckles, wooden industrial rustic style furniture adorned in brass or iron, southwestern and/or native inspired blankets, clawfoot chairs, stained glass windows, worn leather sofas often in brown, wooden barrels, kerosene hurricane lanterns, dreamcatchers, record and/or book stacks, sometimes fur throw rugs and antler chandeliers. Also hatchets/swords/taxidermy heads or even tapestries can be found on the walls. Speaking of walls, I usually find this aesthetic in New York style studio lofts with exposed brick/wiring/venting and if the walls aren't brick, they're usually a dark hunter green. To use anything for a source of reference, the best I can direct you to would be a chain of B&B spots called Urban Cowboy. I can't decide if it's boho cowboy, rustic, cottagecore or dark academia but it's a very specific look and I don't know if there's a name for it. It's very masculine but it's not just any one style.

@iReturnV1deotapes Ah, I think I know what you mean. I like that style, too. I don't know the official title, but I've heard it referred as New World Explorer. It was from the late 19th century, so I would expect it to be a sub style of Victorian.
@iReturnV1deotapes3 ай бұрын
@@Cedestra New world explorer is a very apt name for it. Maps/Atlases, captain's wheels, compasses and globes are often adorned in set photos of this style. It's such a chameleon of a look that you could describe it any number of contradictory ways and it would somehow remain accurate. Industrial, nautical, mountain lodge, dark cottagecore/academia, even hints of steampunk crossover to a degree.
