Completely agree. I've been looking for a specific type of chair for my living room, and today I finally found one exactly as I wanted it for about 7 usd. I've wanted a specific coat for years, and yesterday perusing my favorite online thrift store I found one for 54 usd.

I have had great luck with finding vintage items in my small town thrift store. The store manager and I have had many great conversations on my style. She now puts items away for me during the sorting process. I went in today and she had a wool grandpa cardigan, a pair of linen pants, a linen skirt with a wide, asymmetrical ruffle at the bottom, a tweed blazer and a lace blouse. I took it all!! Total $15!!!!

I actually love that you shared that thrifting what you really want takes time. I think in the current climate, people are used to getting what they want immediately and sometimes finding something easily, also contributes to how easily people discard items. Have you thought of sewing items you want? I’m thinking about taking sewing classes to make my own stuff. As always, love your content!
@justlanchen2 жыл бұрын
So happy you liked it. I used to make clothes but when I moved my sister took her sewing machine back and at the time I had no room. I honestly need another because there are a couple things I’ve found that I could’ve sewed to fit me perfectly

you absolutely need to go on a thrifting tour in europe! specifically, belgium! belgians are not too fond of vintage things and are always trying to get rid of vintage items for a super low price. one thrift store in my area sells stuff by the kilo (like .75 per kilo) so i’ve gotten a bunch of vintage ornate frames, paintings, and mirrors for as low as €5. the most i’ve ever spent at this store is €13 and i came out with two vintage turntable stands, two vintage blankets, coffee table tray, a beautiful antique drawing in an ornate frame, 1960s european pyrex dish, some vinyls, and some other cute decor. europe is the way to go for second hand dark academia finds!!

For those of us that may get impatient shopping for these things, those lace up boots that you got can be found in a western store. They are a type of cowboy boots. My husband as a pair like those. He prefers the lace up style western boot. But they will be pricey because they are leather. Many of them Even have leather soles.

Hi Lanchen! If you come to Spain some day you can't miss the second hand street markets that most cities and towns organize once a week. You can find thousands of incredibly cheap clothes! at this point I only buy my clothes there. And thanks for showing your experience in the thrift shop, even though it may be hard to find some things I would really like to go to one in the future because we don't have them in Spain :)

I was considering moving to Spain actually but travel restrictions have held me back. I do plan on going one day soon though, I will totally check out the markets :) thanks for the tip

I know this video is super old, but I found it so I figure it is worth commenting. I want to ‘yes and…’ your point about shopping secondhand being a waiting game and more difficult than regular shopping, by saying that these things are extra true if you’re of a size or shape that precludes you a lot of the time. Patience is incredibly important. I just wanted to put it out there as Lanchen is pretty much the ideal body type for this kind of shopping/sustainable practice and she is describing a difficult wait.

Why… Why? would you stop going thrifting. Eight items in eight months is pure magic. I love what you have bought. This is considered and slow fashion shopping at its best. Furthermore you love these pieces and so you wont part with them in a very long time, if ever. That makes them valuable and irreplaceable to you. And so worthwhile for sustainability living. This is best practice for responsible shopping exampled right there. So go you. Give yourself a pat on the back. So impressive! Would that other people would put so much consideration and time into their clothes shopping and then so much less material goods would end up in landfill. I loved this Academia thrifting excursion, your view point and your take on things. Thank you so much for sharing.

@@justlanchen Totally. I grew up with it as a way of life skill. There were eight children in my family. Mum taught us to sew, very early in life. Thrift and change up the clothes, she was an original up cycler long before the term was even a thing. I love and appreciate that younger people like yourself care so much to learn and make it a life style skill too. You are all over it!😊

I’m glad you are thrifting items. I personally downvote ( or at very least refuse to upvote) any video that says “Got this from Amazon”. Thrifting gives a much longer life to any object. When I am done with anything lacy or light weight I put it into my creativity box to trim handkerchiefs, make doll clothes or add to a crazy quilt.
